*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Not to be technical, but Happ has minor league options. You don’t DFA. Heyward is owed $11 billion dollars, so we are stuck with his elite level glove and intangibles.

The only team in baseball to play a defensive specialist RF everyday. If things go bad this year for the Cubs, Heyward is in for a lot of boos.

Wasnt Lackey also in that clubhouse?
Yes. And, David Ross sandwiched his time with the Red Sox and that story.
1. My 1:30 am posts aren't always the most lucid.
2. I can't decide if you blame Theo for that, or did Theo allow Terry Francona to let the team go soft? It seems to me he's making several moves designed to pen in Joe Maddon. I also recall that Theo had one foot out the door when the beer and chicken thing hit in Boston. It's possible to either assign blame, or say he was not in control of that situation.
3. Lackey to me seemed to be a strong presence in 2016. That seemed to be missing last season. The team won a lot of games, but at the end of the season they scuffled. True that the Brewers surged, but the Cubs were flat. Did a different clubhouse make up, or more attentive manager change that?

5. If given the chance I'd love to have beer and chicken with Lackey and Lester.

Probably not enough boos to make him decide to opt out of the rest of his contract.

Wrigley Field beer menu goes bold — and increasingly local — in 2019 with 3 Floyds, Half Acre, more

No Schwarber in an AL park??

Never going to improve against lefties if he doesn’t get the ABs.

Lefty starter. I think KS deserves a shot to prove his value, but Zagunis is on the roster to smash lefties.

Schwarbers best at bats of his career came against Andrew Miller. The ball he put on scoreboard was against a lefty. All off season the front office talked about him being more than lefty slugger, a complete hitter who doesnt just hit homers. With that, I expect him to get starts over Mark Zagunis. He shouldnt be a platoon

I don’t totally disagree, but Zags just smoked a double against the lefty SP to drive in a run. He is on the roster to do that one thing.

JAVY!!
LOL, listen to the Cubs fans chanting his name after his second home run. He mashed that like it was on a tee.

Outcome bias. If we want to get back on top, Zagunis isnt taking us there. Schwarber can.
Are you going to spend the whole game picking away at why one guy isn't starting when the Cubs are up 7-2? ;)
And, just to be clear, I am not what you consider a stat savant, but Schwarber's splits against lefties are pretty meh, aren't they? Since he hasn't distinguished himself to at least be average against lefties you need to go with the guy who smokes lefties.

If people are going to respond to me i am going to respond back.

My point is simple, the Cubs front office spent the whole off season talking Schwarber up as just hitting (not over thinking) and getting back to being the player he was when he was first called up. I dont think sitting him opening up day is a good start to that. When he was first called up they let him hit lefties.

Zagunis has 24 career at bats and has a career average of .105. He doesnt smoke anyone.

Have to agree with Cutty in this debate. Schwarbs needs the ABs against lefties, needs the work, needs to build confidence and prove himself. Schwarbs is the future, not Zagunis.

Zagunis doesn't exactly have a large sample size at the MLB level. He played his way onto the roster because of his ST. The Cubs have said this year is important, and it's time to produce, not be a prospect. The stats say Schwarber isn't as productive against lefties. So, do you turn this year into a developmental year, or try harder to win?
And, now you have a switch. In comes Schwarber to face the righty. I can live with this. If Schwarber doesn't like it, he can produce more in his chances against lefty, including during ST when some of these decisions are made.

Cubs face another lefty on Monday in Atlanta (Sean Newcomb). Let's see what happens then (without the DH).

And, Schwarber just PH for Zagunis too. :)
