*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

As already stated, they were very good last year by basically every metric.

By the last couple months of the season, the pen was TOAST.

When they were healthy they were the #1 pen in baseball. But after several months of mismanagement and overuse, Morrow’s arm was destroyed, Cishek was completely burnt out, Strop hurt himself and not one single pitcher was reliable.

They brought in Chavez who was basically duct tape for a few weeks but by that time it was too late.

This Heyward-Hendricks-Zagunis-Almora stretch of the lineup is not good for scoring runs.

This Zagunis/Schwarber straight platoon nonsense should be over after tonight. JFC.
as long as maddumb is the manager, I wouldn't count on any nonsense to stop :(

not sure it really matters though, I don't see this team as having a serious chance of winning it all....

Hard to see any reason to disagree. I'm just trying not to be too pessimistic on April 1.
I hear ya, it's tough though.
I can't imagine many thought the BP wouldn't screw us over and it's already cost us 2/3 of our games :(
Shame theo and the owner didn't realize it, or just didn't care....

Outside of Lester not one of the pitchers on the Cubs staff seems to know what the f**k they are supposed to be doing out there. The 4 errors kind of gives Hendricks a pass, but he still spotted them 2 runs off the bat.

They didn't see this coming out of spring training? None of these pitchers can throw strikes. Another week like this and the season will be essentially over already. How long do they get before the pitching coach gets canned (I'd say at least a month...but by then it will be too late). You can't win a division in April, but you can lose it. You do that by going 9 games down in the first two weeks. At this point, this team doesn't look like it can win 60 games. I realize this post sounds pretty panicky but with the money being spent on this team this is inexcusable. I know they can right the ship but if they get down too many games now they will never catch up. Milwaukee pretty much has an automatic win if they have the lead going into the 8th or 9th inning.

I'll put a wager on the over!!! Where do I place my bet?

that said, I'm way more worried about the pen. how you gonna whine about the starters after a couple days? the past few years they have been a huge plus to the team! just too soon imo. now, if you want to bitch about a couple of theos signings a year ago(or how much he gave up for Q) ;)......:D

You saying it doesn't make it true. In September/October, the Cub pen allowed 45 ER in 113.2 innings for a 3.56 ERA. On Sept 4, the Cub pen allowed 8 in 4 innings. Take that from the total and the remainder is a 3.04 ERA.

That's not toast. If you look only at the last week plus the wild card, the pen gave up 11 in 32.2, for a 3.03 ERA.

The BP was gassed. They had nobody left but Chavez and Strop. IDGAF about your metrics, my eyes told me they were TOAST.

I'm whining about everybody not named Lester on the pitching staff. On the other hand, have they hit double digits for errors tonight?

You saying the pen was bad doesn't make it so.

No, the pen being bad makes them bad.

Are you the same poster who was preaching Contreras metrics saying he was the worst C in baseball?

Numbers aren’t everything.

No, that's not me.

How do you judge the pen then, if not by runs given up when it mattered most? Sure, you could argue that the pen lost games, but the bad offense basically required them to be perfect over the last month.

In that last month, the Cubs scored fewer than 4 runs 16 times and went 4-12. I have a really hard time blaming the pen, which was posting a sub-4.00 ERA.

Time to blow it up. Trade everyone.
The guys the Cubs want to trade suck, or are overpaid. The guys Theo is clinging to are the guys other teams want.
I was thinking about Christian Yelich today. When the Marlins were starting their latest full on dump, the Cubs were connected to Yelich, but supposedly some combination of at least 2 from column Almora/Baez/Russell/Schwarber was too much. Baez is the only guy on that list I am emotionally attached to

It's like these guys don't realize you can look up stats on the internet. How anyone can blame last season on the bullpen is beyond me.

Ha I don't even know how to wrap my head around this logic.

"The bullpen is bad because I said so"

Every meaniingful stat proves you wrong

"numbers aren't everything"

The Cubs bullpen was good last year, that's a fact. That doesn't change no matter what your dumbass opinion is.

no response. Best bullpen in baseball has caratini as their #4 guy. Makes sense clown

You realize Caratini is a catcher right? You didn't answer my question anyway, Maddon can't throw Morrow on back to back days, you don't want him using Stop or Cisek, he got about every possible inning he could from Chavez, so again who else did you want him to use more of?

will Joe make it to the all star game?
Given the fact that Theo and Jed threw down the gauntlet last year, and have been willing to cut guys and demote guys this Spring I think the answer is murky. If they are all in, and they think Joe isn't doing the job he will get fired.

The good news is that other good teams are slow out of the gate too, the Cubs are not alone. I remember last season being so frustrated with the club at the start of the year that I had to take some time away from listening to the games because I was getting aggravated. They got things figured out and it worked out fine, well, except for September.

I think part of the angst is that the Brewers have picked up right where they left off. Yelich going nuts out of the gate, Cain making big plays. It's like, do these F-ers ever lose? Can't win the division in April but you sure can lose it by digging too deep of a hole. That's what I am worried about right now.

Do these guys ever hold their Front Office accountable? If this season doesn't work out, it will be largely due to roster issues, due in large part to poor contracts given out prior to 2018 season and a horrific farm system.

They certainly should. I think McLeod's seat should be getting pretty warm these days, along with others, I'm sure.

One thing is for certain, if the Cubs don't make the playoffs and are a serious contender for the NL this year I think Cubs Fan is going to explode and heads will have to roll in the front office. Win the WS in 2016 and seem to be on the cusp of a really special run only to have it pi$$ed away. Unacceptable. The team better start stringing together some wins now because the mood isn't going to get any better. Especially considering the Blackhawks and Bulls aren't distracting anybody with a playoff run this spring.

Joe Maddon is on a short leash. He knows it, the players
know it, and Theo Epstein knows it. Currently, Joe Girardi
is at undisclosed location and will be Maddon's replacement
by the All-Star break.
