*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Baseball...amiright?

It sure's hell has a nasty habit of ripping your lungs out when you least expect it.

Careful what you wish for with Cardiac Craig....

As of 10/14/18 Craig Kimbrel's last clean postseason outing in a game his team was winning when he entered was 8 years ago!

Game 2 of the 2010 NLDS. Yeah, really.

The veteran’s struggles aren’t exactly a blip on the radar, either: Kimbrel posted an unsightly 4.57 ERA in the second half of the 2018 regular season and saw his WHIP jump from 0.885 in the first half to 1.200 in the second. His 2018 postseason ERA was 5.91.

Well, not when your closer walks to the mound with a five gallon can of gasoline and a zippo.

The Cubs are going to have to address the bullpen at some point. I still think they'll wind up dealing Montgomery for a back-end bullpen arm. Sunday's homers aside, I also think Chatwood could become a really useful arm out of the pen.

That said, I'm still not freaking out over one terrible loss.

Cubs actually have a few nice pieces to trade for bullpen help — Montgomery, Russell and Happ. It’s going to happen, probably soon. Bruce Levine was just on the radio saying Detroit closer, Shane Greene, might be an option. 13 saves and recently named AL reliever of the month.

The problem with waiting too long is two fold. There will be other contenders looking for extra arms also. And many teams have better farm systems with better prospects. The tradeable guys on the Cubs roster aren't guys most dealing teams want. They look for prospects where they control salary for 3-5 years.

Secondly... some guy with good stats on a struggling team typically hasn't closed in high pressure situations like playoff games. They are still a question mark and I wouldn't trust that kind of guy.

Kimbrel is still the better option today but Theo better not wait too long. Cubs bullpen is still garbage.

Okay, who would you rather have as your closer:

Giving kimbrell anything more than a 1 year deal is crazy. There’s a reason no one has signed him, he is clearly on the downside of his career.

Although it's extremely early in the season and a lot can happen... this sure looks like a year where it's Dodgers/Cubs vs Houston in October. The Yankees injury situation rules them out, imo.

So... Cubs aren't beating LA with that shitstorm of a bullpen. Pull the trigger now before a few other teams with playoff probability do. The only reason Theo waits is if he's going to dangle Schwarber before the deadline.

One question for someone that could explain it... why the hell was Strop smiling in the dugout after he was removed?

Epstein needs to release that clown today and just take the salary hit. It's not like this is the first time PS has shit the bed.

Don't compound mistakes you've already made by chasing and making bigger mistakes. Signing Kimbrel would be a reactionary decision made from a position of weakness and a big mistake. Identify an undervalued asset that you feel is on the upswing and go after them.

I like the Greene guy from Detroit. Former starter converted to closer and has been on an upward trajectory as he's grown into the position the last few years.

I'm still surprised that Kimbrell and Keuchel haven't been signed....but at this point, on top of all the stuff already discussed, I think they're big injury risks. They didn't have a normal spring. They're not getting regular work now. I'm sure they're working out, throwing sims and all that, but it's not the same. If the Cubs sign Kimbrell, he's going to have to go down for likely extended spring and then maybe do something much like a rehab stint before they put him in the bullpen.

It's only going to get worse because I don't think anyone is going to sign him until June, when the comp pick Boston would get goes away.

Yep. Not worth getting him until June, then you have a period where he needs to get into game shape, there's that break-in period where he works out the kinks once he hits the majors, kind of like a guy coming back from injury not being full 100% and on their game right away. The only good part about it is he should be very fresh for the stretch run and the playoffs. More often than not signings like this end up a disaster.

I would absolutely kick those tires. He and his agent overplayed their hand, but he is still effective. Maybe only as an 8th inning guy, but the bullpen needs showing up. Too many types that deserve to be in Des Moines. At least Kimbrel has been in the fire and wouldn't wilt. He might give up a bomb or two, but he won't piss his pants on the mound.
Maybe Edwards is fixed mentally to return to being a solid 7th-8th inning guy.

Freaking out is good for you. It keeps you young and vital.

You know Kenley Jansen (LA's closer) has given up 4 HRs already (in 17 innings) this year? Including a grand slam to lose a game to the Padres on Sunday? Oh, and he had a heart procedure too. Baseball :)

Kimbrel was bad at the end of last season (post season). He's another arm and can be dominant, but not sure he's the answer.

What the hell was Schwarber doing? Flubs an easy pop fly and then is laughing about it. All this after striking out looking.

What an asshole.

Now the game is tied because of Schwarber.

Goddamn idiot!

I’d take Schwarber out now—middle of the inning. Embarrass him. Give him some time to reflect on his sins.

Strop had a sub-3.00 ERA for the Cubs from 2013-2018. Last night was bad, but he has been a terrific RP for the Cubs.

As for smiling in the dugout, I didn't see it, but don't care. Part of being a good RP is not dwelling on your failures and having a short memory.
Strop had no excuse for pitching like a complete pile of crap, then laughing about it on the bench. I would have kicked his ass all the way back to South Bend. Not even let him near his locker, let him fend for himself.

What the hell was taking Schwarber so long to get to 2nd base??!! Was he running with a piano on his back?
If your wife wakes up in the middle of the night because you are talking in your sleep, which name is she most likely to be hearing? Anna, or GD Schwarber!!
