*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

You don’t remember the time mark grace and Orlando Merced did it in 1998?

My actual first guess was Sosa and Grace, but then decided to play the numbers. As I recall Merced was a September trade and couldn’t play in the post season? I have a hazy memory of being at the Sports Column and him playing his first game, or being traded for. It was after a home football game.
Very hazy memory.

Intertesting comments by Ozzie Guillen on the Score this morning. He said that Yu Darvish has too many pitches, and especially on a day like today needs to strip it down to the fastball, something with some break to it, and something off speed. Darvish likes to say that he has five pitches that he can command fully.
Food for thought.

Also on the Score they addressed this shameful event. What can we say? People feel emboldened to do this in America these days.
The man has not been publicly identified to my knowledge. Mully was calling for him to come on the air. He basically called on people to text in the guy's name if anyone knew him. I wonder if there is a lawsuit in the works, or he is just going to lay low?

Ozzie is like the 100th person to say that.

And it's not unlike the Chatwood stuff with him going to the bullpen. They both have live arms and their pitches have a lot of movement. Keep it simple.

As they say, perfect is the enemy of good. Both of these guys try to be perfect. Keep it simple and let the stuff work.

I am officially in the "worried about Kris Bryant" camp. It's not as I feel he has had a bunch of "loud outs" - he simply does not drive the the ball with any frequency, and gets owned on high fastballs.

Why didn't you post this 3 weeks earlier? He's started with the "loud outs" not long after this post and now he's hammering pitches.

The bullpen should pull a Code Red on Darvish. He is killing them. They are lucky to have a fresh Montgomery up to eat up multiple innings, but four innings is ridiculous. The team is in one of those stretches where they play 20+ games with only one day off along the way. Darvish is going to cost some guys MLB time with a shuttle ride to Des Moines.

Since the AZ series, he's looked as good as I have ever seen him. Crushing the ball, and really seeing the ball well, evidenced by his walk rate.

This was a terrific series. A "trap" of sorts where they did not play well and with mostly terrible conditions, and they found a way to get 3/4.

Heyward will never live up to the contract, but I have absolutely nothing negative to say about him.

Funny thing is, his deal was front-loaded, so he is owed $106M over 5 years. If he can be worth 2-3 WAR, his overall contract won't be horrible. And the bad years included a World Championship followed by another NLCS. It's clear he is a respected member of the team with great intangibles.

His deal will make Yu's look like a bargain.

I hope you have noticed two things:

1. I am not as negative this year.
2. You and I are agreeing a lot.

The Cubs better find a closer and damn fast.
Obviously, I'm not a Cubs fan and don't watch every game... but if the diehards here think guys like Edwards/Strop/Montgomery/bullpen by committee are going to save you playoff games in October... no way in hell.

Getting Kimbrel after June 1st and not losing a draft pick is the route I'd take. Hell, I'd go after Sergio Romo before I trusted the current relievers.

Kimbrel was not good at the end of last year (playoffs). And Sergio Romo? Um, wow. 12 innings/8 runs so far this year. He gave up 11 HRs last year in 67 innings. No thank you.

I am still holding out for Henry Rowengartner. :)

Kimbrel may be there, but there will be help available. I’d like for Theo to see what Shane Green would cost from the Tigers. They are a .500 team now, but they will fall apart and deal by the Summer.

All I'm saying is I wouldn't trust the current relievers in the playoffs.

Things are going great, but they will have to acquire multiple bullpen arms, including a closer, to go deep.

Here’s the weird bat that fixed Bryant:

It's so annoying. His stuff is fine. He just doesn't trust it enough to simplify and run with it. He's trying to put every pitch exactly on the black. Just freaking throw. Your stuff is electric.

Monty was great, but it's unfortunate that he had to go out there and sponge up 5 innings.

Actually, as annoying as Darvish is, it's probably a really good sign. He showed he's healthy and while he's not in the rotation currently, he showed he can clearly go stretch out to a starter length. I hope the Cubs can get a good return for him later in the year.

He really seems to like that ax-handle bat. Hopefully this continues because he is murdering baseballs and taking a lot of walks right now.

Kimbrell was bad late last year. The Red Sox won a ring in spite of Kimbrell. They were lucky to clear the Yankees.

Sergio Romo? Really?

That said, I think the Cubs should be able to get a good arm or two for Montgomery. You're not going to get an elite closer, but Montgomery can be a 3 for a lot of teams who aren't contending. That's value.
