*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Kyle Schwarber is 4-39 with RISP this season.

When you look at Schwarber, he’s a perfectly acceptable player. Over 162 games, he is likely to be a slightly above average outfielder.

Unfortunately, Theo Epstein believed he would be a superstar with the bat (referred to him having David Ortiz potential) and Kyle will never live up to those lofty expectations. He is failing miserably in the lead off spot.

They miss the professional at bats of Ben Zobrist in the leadoff spot.

I honestly have no clue how StL won that game all things considered.

Shildt keeping AW in there for 225 pitches was nutsy cuckoo clock stuff...yes it was obvious Waino was pitching around the tough outs yet still had effective "average stuff".

But I thought for certain Hicks was gonna blow that game as punishment for Shildt's horrific process.

I guarantee if Wainwright pitches next weekend (Saturday I'd assume), the Cubs will crush him unmercifully. Modern pitchers simply don't come back well after that many pitches.

Without any clutch hitting the Cubs lose 3 games in
St. Louis. The Cubs have the talent to win their
division, but perhaps the mental attitude is their big
problem.

Ordinarily when a team get some shut down, much credit goes to the opposing pitcher. The Cubs did not get much against Mikolas or Flaherty and in those cases, you tip your hat to the opposing pitcher.

Not today - I will only tip the hat to Adam Wainwright for his grit, but not for his pitching. Wainwright has not been a good MLB starter since his Achilles injury in 2015. Today was 95% bad offensive execution by the Cubs and 5% great defense by DeJong and Wong (robbing Rizzo of hits that likely change the game).

Wainwright walked SEVEN batters - the guy knows his stuff is no longer good, and his game is to nibble. Kris Bryant's first two AB's were disgraceful (the guy can't hit at Busch Stadium), and really set the tone for a bad day. Wainwright's ERA will likely not sit below 4.50 at the end of any of his starts this year, and the Cubs completely let him off of the hook.

This was a disgraceful performance on offense. Cole Hamels pitched better than Wainwright (a full run better per FanGraphs FIP), but was let down by a horrible offensive approach and a costly error by the worst defensive catcher in baseball (Contreras).

If the Cubs don't touch Wainwright for 5 runs next weekend, they should fire their hitting coach immediately following the game.

Dude, what is your beef with Contreras? Did he sleep with your old lady or something? Almost every team in MLB would take him as their starting catcher in a second.

Nothing against him at all. He is the best hitting catcher in baseball. He is the worst behind the plate (largely due to framing), and it really is not close. The numbers show this.

My frustration is that he is not getting better at framing, which is more of a "soft skill." It impacts the game, and diminishes some of the advantage that his bat gives him over other catchers.

Wilson Contreras has 32 RBI's and 12 HR's.

Gary Sanchez of the Yankees has 35 RBI's
and 18 HR's.

Bottom Line: Both should make the All-Star team
for their respective leagues.

So CarGo is called up and Jim Adduci is DFA'd. I was curious whether CarGo was going to be tied to any Zobrist news or who was going to lose a 40-man spot.

I dont think there is room for both Cargo and Zobrist on the roster. I think this signing made it pretty clear when the cubs expect zobrist back

Likely so....but yet if Zobrist said he was coming back tomorrow, it would cost nothing to let CarGo go. I'm just curious when the Cubs are going to make an actual announcement.

Currently being no-hit by the Angels’ “opener” and Trevor freaking Cahill.

A Hot Rock(ie)s team comes to town tomorrow. They have won 8 in a row and 9 of 10 against Baltimore, Arizona, and Toronto (not exactly Murderer's Row). Can the Cubs cool them down? I like that Hendricks throws game 1. He just might disrupt them for the whole series (at least I hope so). Time to recover from their recent demise.

We will have to wait a few years to see how it shakes out, but the Cubs have elevated their launch angle on some pitchers in the draft. Hopefully they didn’t draft Hayden Simpson 2.0 in the first round. Third rounder is the closer from Louisville who can hit triple digits. Hopefully he pans out unlike Tony something or other they drafted from Louisville 4-5 years ago as a potential closer.
The arms fell off of both those guys.
