*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Can we please hammer Wainwright tonight? That last game against him was freaking embarrassing. I’m thinking KB gets some revenge and knocks 2 out of the park.

Amen. It has been a good homestand regardless, but it's time to hit Wainwright tonight. 90% of his successful outing was poor execution by the Cubs. He walked seven for crying out loud.

I don't know what J Hey's stats are this season but every time I watch a game he does something good. He seems to be hitting the ball a lot better and his defense is great as usual.

Javy with the no-look tag.

Excellent throw by the “worst defensive catcher in baseball.”

See, not to nitpick or anything, but it's that kind of pitcher usage by Maddon that pisses me off.

Agreed. That’s a great time to let Edwards pitch himself out of trouble.
I am not going to overvalue Edwards, but you have to let a guy grow. You cannot treat him like every time there is a whisper of trouble you are coming to take the ball from him. Maddon showed more confidence in him in 2016.
And, again, you cannot blow through your pen like this.

That’s an odd criticism. Strop was already warming up, so he only threw one more pitch. You guys would just not have anyone warming up in the bullpen?

Ideally Edwards would not have walked two guys and could close it out, but I am glad that Maddon did not give him the chance to walk a 3rd guy and bring the tying run to the plate.

That’s exactly right. Maybe Edwards doesn’t get out of it...but maybe he does. If the game gets to 5-3 or 5-4, absolutely go get Strop, but in that situation? Give Carl some leash.

It worked out and strop really didn't do much, fine. But this game wasn't game 7 of the WS.

For me, it comes down to what you want from Edwards. If you're done with him, then trade him or send him down or something...but if he's worth being on the ML roster (and I think he is), then pick spots like this, keep the long view, and let him throw. What's the worst case tonight? Next hitter hits a 3-run bomb and it's 5-4. Then you go to Strop with bases empty and 2 outs.

Leaving Wrigley now. Not a Cubs fan, but I had a blast. Go Cubs Go, until they play Atlanta.

I'd be fine with Carl's Jr. never throwing a pitch in a Cubs uni again. He has stuff but is scared out there. Contrast that with Lester yesterday and how he gutted through that start yesterday. A warrior. Carl's Jr. is mentally weak.

Disagree, Maddon made the right move by letting Strop end it without the tying run at the plate and the heart of their order looming. Don’t risk an extra inning game that really messes up the bullpen or a demoralizing loss with a tough road trip starting tomorrow.

I just look at it differently. A confident, reliable Edwards late in the season is worth a little angst in early June.

Going to Strop up 4 with 2 on and 2 out not only shows no confidence in Edward, but also Strop.

Edwards gave up 2 walks and a shot to the warning track. Leave him in and it could have been big trouble.

I don't understand people questioning Maddon's bullpen usage. Everyone knows he's not good at it. Why is everyone surprised now?

Yeah just look at the Cubs bullpen rankings the last few years, they've only been near the top of the NL every single year, obviously he sucks at it!

It's either

A. The Cubs have been loaded with dominant bullpen arms those years or
B. Never let facts get in the way of a faulty premise

Fully aware the what about Chapman and World Series usage stuff.... and yes Maddon was bad in that series.

Maddon reminds me of the line in Blazing Saddles about Cecil B. DeMille. Maddon has killed a lot of arms.

He could be weak, but I will say I tend to not like the pitches willy calls when carls is pitching. Of course he can shake him off, but he rarely seems to get aggressive. Not speaking about last night though, just could hit the zone.
I hate seeing him constantly start off with more curves than fb.

I'm playing off of some of the articles I've seen today on BCB and BN, but what happens when Kimbrell is added to the roster, and is there another arm out there to add? I am 90 percent sure that Morrow never pitches for the Cubs this year. Brad Brach seems to be crapping his pants off the roster. If Ryan is sent down they'd only have Montgomery as a lefty in the bullpen.
As I have mentioned before, I think the Giants are going to unload their roster before the trade deadline this year. I'd love to see them add lefty Will Smith from the Giants.

Stupid Bryant couldn’t make it four in a row. He just doesn’t try!

Rizzo hit a blast to center on a two strike count, when he chokes up on the bat. Beautiful hitting.
The Cubs need more games in Colorado.
