*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

I don't have much of an opinion on him but I do appreciate a guy who isn't striking out all the time, had plenty of those. Hopefully Heuer makes up for whatever NM is lacking in that trade

Edit: Now Miles Mastrobuoni.....that guy sucks
I'm a fan of NM. After all the striking out the Cubs have done for the past several years, having a guy like him on the team is refreshing. Was glad to see him with a productive pinch run in extras tonight. I think he'll have a solid MLB career if he can stay healthy (and I realize that is a big IF), but I doubt it will be with the Cubs. since 2B is locked down for years, and a contending team cannot have a regular 3B with such little pop in the bat. I'm hoping he's a solid bench player all season, increasing his trade value.

MM has very little value for the team right now (swinging a bat left-handed is the only reason he made it this far), so he is the obvious choice to be optioned when SS comes back, unless the Cubs really think they need a 4th middle infielder on the team, in which case they may end up sending NV back to Iowa for regular playing time.

@hawkifann Someone just threw down the gauntlet to you.
Need more sample. He’s not off to a great start and he’s being asked to play out of position. As a utility player I like him - he’ll have a lot of contact, great speed and a good glove. As a starting RF, he sucks.

This player of the week is brought to you buy Prevagen!
It sounds like NV is coming up today. Kind of weird timing with Suzuki looking almost ready. I wonder if someone is hurt?
Assad back to AAA. Makes sense - not only has he had a lousy start to the year, but the Cubs already have 2 relievers to provide multiple innings (AA, KT), and they're both really good at it. I like the idea of getting him stretched out as a starter at Iowa.

I hope NV is able to prove himself too valuable to send back to AAA when SS is ready to come back. I'm hoping MM goes down instead.

Will be interesting to see what happens when Hughes is ready to come back, too. Will Rucker go back to the minors or will the Cubs finally pull the plug on the Merryweather experiment?

I think Merryweather will get at least 6 weeks, so I think probably Rucker….but I’m lower on Rucker than a lot of people.

Can’t believe how much brighter the playing field is with the new LED lights. Major upgrade.
I thought something was wrong with my TV at first last night

At first I wasn't a fan of the new lights but by the end of the game it stated to wear on me, they are "whiter" light than the old lights

I typically like the warmer "yellowish" lights

Give them a few months. ;)

I hope Dansby is okay. I’m disappointed in Hayden tonight.
Yeah, Rossy presented both Assad and Wes with a challenge, and unfortunately the early returns aren’t so great. Another problem is that the other candidates to hold the #5 spot until KH returns (Sampson, Kilian, Elias, Neidert) have also not looked so good early on at AAA. Might leave the door open for R Thompson to get a chance if he puts together a few more good outings.

I saw briefly that DS left with a “side injury.” Hopefully nothing serious, but it’s a long season, and I’d much prefer he recover properly than deal with a nagging pain for the next 6 or so months…

If I’m in charge, I give Wesneski 2-3 more starts before I do anything. He clearly didn’t have his command tonight, but he also got no help from his D and this home plate ump sucks (for everyone). I think he’s pressing and he just needs to calm the eff down.

I’m really hoping that the Dansby thing is completely precautionary with the Cubs up big. We’ll see. I know he’s not one to come out of a game, but the Cubs are obviously much, much better with him.

I thought I saw Swanson was a game time decision/Day to day prior to this game? Maybe I misread something but seems like I saw that.

14-9 looks like an Iowa football score. A good bend-but-don't-break effort by the defense with a pick six thrown in and another turnover setting up the offense inside the 40 yardline.

His wife, Mallory, had knee surgery yesterday morning, and the reporting is that he was fatigued and dehydrated. Just a guess, but with the Cubs up 2-0 in the series Swanson gets a day off, even though he isn’t known for taking too many days off.

Yeah, he said he was up at 4 a.m. yesterday before his wife's surgery. Just a long stressful day and he said he was spent. Wouldn't be surprised if he takes today off too as a precaution.
