*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

NV spent a week with the team on the West Coast, I don't know if the guy has swung a bit in 10 days?
No game action, obviously, but I assume he’s been doing his work and getting his reps in the cage, tee, probably some live BP and the VR sims.

I just read that Max Muncy is going on the paternity list and will likely miss the Dodgers series in Pittsburgh this week.

Figures.😖
I see Reynolds will also miss Pirates night ball game after signing an 8 yr contract, 107 million yesterday.

Well, maybe Blake Snell will lob a few in for him tonight until he can get up to game speed. :)

LOL at the Padres hitters bitching about the strike zone. It's been fairly solid. It isn't the umps fault that your massive payroll isn't paying off.

Is it me, or does Suzuki yield to Hoerner a lot? The outfielder coming in has the easier play on a pop fly, but he’s yielded to Hoerner twice tonight.
Also, NICO!!

Gomes giving Cubs fans his best Johnny Bench impression, mashing with men on base and displaying his gold glove, and Steele starting his Denny McLain impression, zeroing in on a 30 win season.

Cubs are developing a serious trend here. Pitch a shutout or score 10+ runs, they're going to win.😂

BN write up on Brennen Davis. He struggled at the start of the season, but has picked up the last week. Iowa has been really hit hard by crappy weather and postponed games, so it’s a small sample size. What I’m really hoping for out of Davis is a solid season, and injury free until next Spring.

this bullpen has sucked big dick all season
That's a bit harsh.

ERA's - Thompson 1.23, Leiter 1.80, Rucker 2.53, Alzolay 2.92, Hughes 3.18, Boxberger 3.60

Those are 6 pretty dependable guys. Fulmer/Merryweather/Assad are the ones who have brought the numbers down, including 3 of the 4 blown saves. Assad is probably back at Iowa for good, and I doubt the other 2 will survive the season, although it would be tough to eat Fulmer's $4M, which is why he'll likely be the last casualty.

If the Cubs are competing in September, they'll have Heuer back, a few other candidates in house, and could always make a trade. I don't see the bullpen as a huge issue. I would consider the health and effectiveness of Hendricks and Taillon to be more of an area of concern right now.

I’ve been the problem, I watched the blown brewers, dodgers, and Padres games

Fulmer shouldn’t be closing, but otherwise, I think he’ll be fine long-term. He has a track record of quality stuff and getting guys out. He had 25 holds last year. After a shaky walk to start his outing today, he actually made a bunch of quality pitches and carved through a tough stretch in the Padre lineup in the 6th. Before the games he blew against LA, he blew one save on a Kelenic homer (Kelenic was red-hot at the time) and otherwise hadn’t given up much hard contact, despite a BABIP of .500. He sucked against the Dodgers and now has to earn his way back to leverage spots, but I think he’ll do it.

I'm not a fan of Mervis coming up just for a taste of MLB life. He needs daily ABs. Now, if the Hosmer experience fails, or someone is injured, bring him up.

What is it about Miami? The Cubs just suck against these guys. On paper, Miami looks terrible.

Suzuki needs a day or two off. 3 Ks and a GIDP today. Put Velasquez in RF for a couple of games. Suzuki has only 6 RBIs with 3 guys batting ahead of him, all having great OBP seasons. It doesn't make sense to have him batting cleanup right now.
