*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Assad officially optioned.

IMHO Riley Thompson is the guy most ready to come make a big league start, but it would require a 40-man roster move (and he's the only one they'd make a roster move for, again IMHO). Even though there are multiple players on the roster now that I don't think will be there by mid-late summer, I don't think the Cubs are ready to make any cuts yet, which is why I think it will be Killian (thank goodness he seems to have it figured out after an awful debut this season).
I don‘t think I’d want to go any lower on the list for a non-40 starter anyway. With Hendricks coming back, Taillon looking like a short stint on the IL and all, I’d rather save those 40-man moves for guys like Sanders, Burdi, Nittoli, Kay or whoever is still throwing well when the need arises.

The Cubs are a bit limited on the 40-man until they make complete decisions on some of the fringe roster guys. Some decisions might be made earlier, but a lot of times, teams want to see 40 games to really get a good read on guys. I think the Cubs really only have a couple pitching slots potentially “open” right now (though with the shuttling back and forth with AAA, it can be a bit more) and maybe 4 position player active roster spots. I think there are very real questions on Merryweather, Fulmer, maybe Rucker and then on the position side, Hosmer, Rios, Torrens and maybe Madrigal. After those guys, the 40-man guys not on the active roster are all young players that the Cubs aren’t going to want to cut.

Fulmer needs to go right now.
Nah, that would be an overreaction. I wouldn’t be shocked if he took an IL stint, but his stuff has been pretty good, he’s just not locating. He has to start taking some lower leverage spots, though. Boxberger probably takes the 9th at this point, but Alzolay and Hughes could also do it. I’d keep Leiter doing what he’s doing and use him based on matchups and then Rucker has been throwing better and can take on more leverage. Excited to see Estrada, too.

Anyone else watching this Reed guy pitching for the Dodgers????

I have never seen an MLB delivery like his. It's almost what one might see in a fast pitch softball game.

I keep telling myself “small sample size”, but I’m starting to love this team. When they get a little deeper and realize this team has a high floor, but not much variance in upside and mix in a few more young guys, this team could really take off. There’s a ton of leadership on the field every single day.

I just read that Max Muncy is going on the paternity list and will likely miss the Dodgers series in Pittsburgh this week.

Figures.😖
