*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Agree. Stoman loves it in Chicago. I see a redo on his contract that locks him up for 2 or 3 more years.
I think it's quite possible that he looks at the guys under contract, the years left on their deals, the guys in the system (He's seen them the last two years in ST), and decides he wants to be a part of a sustained run.

Madrigal giveth, and Madrigal taketh away. That's when the Cubs will really turn the corner, when the bench is improved to the point where that sad sack isn't on the roster.
And, is this the same POS home plate ump as yesterday? This guys sucks.

I think Big 10 basketball might be giving him a long look.

Wisdom has hit homers in four consecutive games. The A's are rolling out a lefty with an ERA of 10.00 tonight.
I like his odds to go five for five.

These late starts are brutal
Keep in mind they are starting the games a little earlier until school lets out. Clearly this doesn't matter in Oakland, anyway.
I'm curious as to if the increased pace of play will make the West Coast games a little easier to get through?

Love Sutcliff.
YOU GOTTA GET OFF THE BAG!! YOU GOTTA GET OFF THE BAG!!
Oh, that bounced off of his leg. That's nobody's fault right there.

Over/under on fans at 12:37pm PT game in Oakland today?
4000. Half of them look to be Cubs fans.
The A’s brought up a top tier prospect for the game. 100 mph on everything, but the Cubs got some good contact on him.

80 pitches and Miller is still throwing right around the 100 mph mark. I didn't think he'd throw this many pitches. If I'm the A's I am protecting this arm.

FYI, due to the day game today, Marquee is broadcasting a Myrtle Beach game tonight. Cade Horton is the starter listed, so try and give it a watch. He was excellent in his pro debut. It's low A, so don't expect to know too many of the names in the line-up beyond Christian Hernandez at SS. Christian Franklin in CF and Moises Ballesteros at C at guys to keep an eye on. Then you get down into the fringy IFA types that are so hard to predict success on.

For those of you with lives, Horton went 4 innings and struck out 7. The video quality was really poor, but he checks off a lot of boxes. Big guy with a power arm, and the stuff looked good. I assume the Cubs will be conservative with him this year. He had injuries in college, and the system has a lot of arms. The most I can see is a bump to South Bend if he progresses well this year.

I had to miss it tonight, as my kid had a game and by the time I got home he was out, but I’ve seen some accounts on Twitter from some accounts I trust and while he did lack some overall command, the slider seems to be a plus-pitch and apparently his fastball was absolutely electric tonight. This system has a lot to look forward to.

For those who like prospect talk, I’m interviewing Greg Huss again (writer for Northside Bound and host of the Cubs on Deck podcast) tomorrow night. We’re going to talk power bats and power arms as it relates to whats’ currently in AAA vs. what’s in Chicago. It’ll be a little more high-minors heavy, but we may also dig a little deeper.

Kind of weird about Taillon. He pitched a good game last time out, and didn't seem to suffer an injury. I wonder if it happened doing a drill, or working out?
Assad went 2 innings his last start for Des Moines. I assumed all day long there would be a delay to the start of tonight's game, but it looks like after a band of storms rolls through there will be baseball. One thing about the new rules, you can start a little later and get done in a crisp time.

Thinking we will see K. Thompson for 3 or 4 tonight if the Cubs stay within a run or 2. Just assume Assad is on a pitch count. NM - didn’t realize he threw a bunch last night. Albert for a few I guess

Yeah, it's a committee game, and Assad's reward is that he's probably on his way back to Des Moines already. My guess is they brought 2 guys to Chicago knowing Assad will go tonight, and be sent right back with a fresh arm needed tomorrow.

Belli 💣
Clearly it's early in the season, but if most of his issues the last few years were related to injuries, he is looking really good so far. He's getting exit velocity numbers like he hasn't produced for several years. The defense was going to be there, but if he hits anything like his prime years he's a steal on a one year deal.

Good write up in BN about what to do for Taillon’s next start. It’s tricky. If the Cubs send Assad down for a reliever he can’t come back for 15 days. So, for starters you are left with Killian who has had 2 good starts in a row and Ben Brown, unless a 40 man move is made. There are some things that can play out regarding an injury or Bellinger going on family leave when his kid is born, but Killian and Brown are the primary options.

Since he wasn't even mentioned in that article, I guess Sampson is still struggling? I haven't been following that closely.

Assad officially optioned.

IMHO Riley Thompson is the guy most ready to come make a big league start, but it would require a 40-man roster move (and he's the only one they'd make a roster move for, again IMHO). Even though there are multiple players on the roster now that I don't think will be there by mid-late summer, I don't think the Cubs are ready to make any cuts yet, which is why I think it will be Killian (thank goodness he seems to have it figured out after an awful debut this season).
