*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

4 years, $68,000,000.....

Not exactly the Heyward disaster, but will hamstring the organization for a while.
Stroman started out pretty slowly like this last year getting hit around pretty good the first couple months, and then bounced back and has been pretty damn good since. We gotta hope the same happens for Jamo or like you said this contract is going to look UGLY, and it's going to cost us quite a few wins this year which this team can't afford.

I’m not worried about JT. My guess is he should have been on the IL a little longer, and made a rehab start at AAA.

@hawkifann

How much longer do I have to watch Jameson pitch on this team?
3+ seasons.

His command/ability to locate right now is just garbage. He got squeezed a bit on pitches they were giving Nola all night, but he spun up a hanger for Schwarber for the granny and just continues to leave sh1t up and out over the plate. A .420+ BABIP is simply not sustainable for anyone and if he can fix whatever is causing his command issues (mechanical flaw, maybe he’s not 100% healthy, who knows), his numbers should improve fairly significantly (whether he’ll be great or not, I can’t say, but it will be really hard statistically to stay THIS bad).

I tweeted this earlier today - when I look at his statcast numbers compared to last year, the outlier is the increased use of his cutter and his inconsistency locating it. Inconsistent command extends to all his pitches to an extent, but it’s stark with the cutter.

too early to start the 2024 season thread?

Yep. Definitely too soon. Hopefully way too soon. The Cubs schedule is front-loaded and they’ve had roster construction flaws that they’re working on fixing.

Hell, the Christopher Morel show is well worth sticking with this season a little longer. Based on a graphic I saw tonight, he’s like 15 hits, 7 bombs, 13 runs scored, 13 RBI in 10 games. That’s stupid.

Sellers at the trade deadline.

And to answer everyone's question on Jameson...he's garbage as the NYY discovered last year.
There wasn't one tear shed when he left NY.

Nobody here gives a **** about the Yankees
Discussing Cubs here.

Keep up.

BTW...this acquiring players off the scrap heap that the Ricketts are doing is a veiled attempt to give Chicago fans hope for the future.
This Taillon contract will end up just as bad, if not worse, than Jason Hayward, imo.

It’s not just as bad, and Bellinger will tired a decent return….

To me, Stroman will have more deadline value than Bellinger.

Hell, Hendricks might even bring more than Bellinger if he gets 8-10 starts.
But I'm glad you've acknowledged why CB was signed.

BTW...In the poll picking the day the Cards would catch the Cubs, did anyone pick May 21st?

Not even close….the Taillon contract, even if it goes to complete shit is 4 years, $68M. That’s not going to prevent them from doing anything. $17M in 2026 is nowhere near $23M in 2021. I also think he’ll recover and be a serviceable starter for the bulk of his contract…but if I’m wrong, it’s not catastrophic.

As for trading at the deadline, we’ll see. The Cubs are walking a tightrope. They’re improving and will certainly want to send the message that they’re not just going to sign guys and dump at the deadline every year. Also, this division SUCKS, so you don’t have to be a WS contender to hang around.

As bad as this has been, they’re in the middle of a stretch where they’re playing 24 of 27 games against teams that were in the playoffs last year, including champion Astros and NL pennant winning Philly. After this stretch, the Cubs have 28 games against 2022 playoff teams the rest of the season.

The road trip sucked, but keep in mind they played a good Twins team, the defending WS champs, and the defending NL champs.
Let’s see what this week brings.

Cubs are in the middle of a stretch where they play 24 of 28 games against 2022 playoff teams. They played 13 games against 2022 playoff teams before this run. After the series at San Diego, the Cubs only have 31 games against 2022 playoff teams the rest of the way.

You guys are right.

The 2nd half schedule is really weak.

That said, a 500 season seems best case scenario.

We’ll see how it all plays out. Of course the biggest worry is that they get so knocked around during this tough stretch of schedule that they fall too far out….but this division sucks so far and likely will continue sucking.

I haven't even really bothered watching baseball so far this year. All I know is I have my notifications set up for Cubs scores and they are losing every GD day. I can't remember the last push notification I got of a win.

Friday, when they pounded Philly 10-1.

Let's give a shout-out to the BP tonight. They did their job, especially Estrada working out of a bases loaded situation with Pete Alonso coming up. Wisdom made a great play on his ground ball and got the sure out.

Not exactly sure what you’re asking, but the crew was Boog, JD and Girardi.

Broadcast highlight of the night for me was Girardi, inning after inning, pointing out all the ways Sanchez sucks as a catcher.
I got confused with the 7th inning stretch. I thought they'd crossed over and only briefly saw who sang Take Me Out To The Ballgame. Didn't catch the name.
Sanchez didn't get any help on that pop up behind the plate. Alonso just stood there and watched the ball drop even though he had the better angle on the ball, and was in range if he'd bothered to shuffle his feet a few steps.

Ah, it was Bill Murray’s brother (Joel?) doing the 7th inning stretch.

And yeah, Sanchez got hung out on that pop up, but that didn’t slow Joe. Gary clearly not a favorite of Girardi’s.
