*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

if Taillon struggles tonight should Cubs send him down?

Guy has been absolute garbage
I’m pretty sure they can’t send him down. I don’t think he has options. The options are to find a path to get him on the IL followed by a rehab stint, keep running him out there, put him in the pen or DFA.

LOL. Taillon is a veteran - he doesn’t have options. If Cubs don’t want him taking up space on the roster, they’ll have to concoct an injury. He’s essentially untradable, and if they put him on waivers they’ll lose him to a desperate team and eat the $68M left on his contract
He would actually probably clear waivers. Cubs are only on the hook for the money if the release him. If some other team claims him on waivers, they take the contract and the Cubs are off the hook.

What is the Cub’s record against s*** teams? We can’t beat the s*** teams.
I hate to say it, but I think Cincy's everyday lineup is currently ahead of the Cubs. The only thing that keeps us close is the Cubs SP corps. Unfortunately, they may not be enough.

On a side note, I felt that Cincy was mocking the Cubs tonight after they took the lead. A fake decoy that tricked Morel into a base running blunder and Cincy's base running/steals that caught the Cubs flat-footed when they had a sizable lead. I hope Rossy calls out the Cubs pride and maybe calls for a couple of HBPs against the Reds tomorrow that will tell them to give the Cubs some respect, or else.

Thanks for the clarification. Doesn’t make me feel a whole lot better about the situation we’re in with him, but I suppose it’s a little better. Do you think he’d be buying a lot of dinner and drinks strutting around the Iowa clubhouse with that $17 million salary?

On a rehab stint, I’m sure he’d buy big spreads for the guys. Not really any other path to him being in Iowa. They’re not going to DFA and hope he clears to take him off the 40 man and, really, as much as he’s struggling, they shouldn’t. Lucas is right - he’s a vet with a long track record who has been struggling and is likely not 100% healthy.

MLB needs to force the two Central divisions into playing triple A ball before they reinstate those ten teams to Big Boy baseball.

It's embarrassing.

Both division leaders are two games over 500.

Ross and Hottovy better be gone by tomorrow morning. This is freaking embarrassing. This team needs a ass kicking.

Ben Brown kicked butt again at Iowa yesterday. He and Wes need to be called up after All-Star break and Taillon can be shut down and put on the 60-day IL if he doesn’t have it figured out by then. He can take a $17M vacation for all I care. Maybe he’ll take Fulmer with him.

Hopefully Heuer is about ready, as well as Bailey Horn, because this pathetic bullpen needs something. Keegan’s fabulous ERA of 54.00 at Iowa proves to me that he’s done. Maybe the Cubs can trick a team into taking him, Rios, Barnhart and Madrigal off our hands for a top-notch groundskeeper and a few rosin bags.

Someone's a little testy today. Cheer up. Just think about how much fun that 15-year Yankees World Series reunion party will be. Get that size XXL Derek Jeter jersey dusted off.

On a positive note, I don't think the Cubs will be "sellers" at the trade deadline.
Can't see anyone on the roster any other team would want!

Oh, well. You had 2016...a once in a century title

The Central isn't a done deal, and you are a waste of time in this thread. You aren't a serious poster if you don't see value in quite a few players who are cheap, or not guaranteed money past 2023 or 2024.

I wouldn't expect the winner of the division even gets to 90 wins.

That's just bad baseball.

MLB needs to fix the playoff structure to the point that division winner doesn't automatically get home field when it's likely they'll have the worst record of all the playoff teams.

You shouldn't reward mediocrity.

BTW: I stand by my promise regarding if the same teams don't make the playoffs this year, like last year, I'll no longer post in Cub's threads.

So perhaps I'll be gone for "Cubs 2024"? But I'm not leaving now!

It’s frustrating that the other teams stink but we stink worse.

I don’t know what the Cubs should do. For instance, we could trade Seiya and or Happ for prospects but there’s already a glut of OF prospects and our middle infield is set. And we have high level starting pitcher prospects. We don’t need more we need the ones we have such as PCA and Cassie/ Canereo/Alcantara Brown/ Hicks / Horton to be stars.

Wait? Not sure what else we can do.

I came away impressed with the Reds this weekend. They beat up 2 of our best SPs and hit a ton. They're pretty young too, aren't they? If they get some SPs going forward, they will become another player in the NLC that will be a pain to deal with.

Except they will deal off the good young players. The Reds are a mess. It’s a shame. There is some budding young talent.

Reds and Pirates could actually be really good teams if they had ownership willing to spend and competent management.

The Reds are close to going with an infield of Steer, McLain, De La Cruz and Encarnacion-Strand. They have some pitching coming up, too. They will be fun to watch. I don’t think the Pirates have that level of talent coming up soon, but just read that Priester might get a call up in June and Rodriguez should be up in June , as well.

now TB comes into town to give us a beat down
Cubs are 8-20 from 4/28 to 5/28. No bueno. Looks like Bellinger hasn't even started running yet. I won't give up just yet, but things aren't playing out like I thought they would.

The problem for the Central divisions is the schedule change means they have to play good teams and since everyone plays everyone, other teams are feasting on all ten teams in the Central divisions.

I fully expect the Cubs and Padres managers are jettisoned by the ASG.

Yeah, I heard that on the pregame yesterday. He's doing pool work... Pool work means see you in a month at best.

Why should the Cubs fire their manager? I thought they were SUPPOSED to be terrible this year?

Which is it?

Edit - And according to my notes, the NL Central and AL East are tied 2-2 in World Championships since the last time the Yankees were relevant. Better go out and thank all the Red Sox fans for doing the heavy lifting for ya'll...

Mgmt needs a scapegoat.

I didn't day he NEEDS to be fired. But someone is taking the fall for this crap. Cubs are literally, one of the worst teams again this year. Fortunately for Ricketts family...Oakland.

And your edit...weak sauce deflection. This is a Cubs 2023 thread.
BTW...Stroman is, without question, the best trade bait on the roster.

Sorry, I'm just amused by you. I think about all those great Yankees teams over my lifetime when the Cubs weren't any good. Yankees fans wouldn't even acknowledge the existence of Cubs fans in those days. Now, in 2023, Yankees fans are so insecure that they come over the Cubs fan message board threads to make themselves feel better. It's just funny. Thank you. Gonna miss you in 2024.

Stro is locked in right now, not saying he hasn't been great all season. He's saying he wants the Cubs to extend him and not trade him. That seems like a no brainer. It would be a PR coup for the Cubs if they did it. With all of the young arms coming up, they need veterans like Stroman to mentor those guys when they reach the Bigs.

Get it done, Jed.

Would love to see several seasons of Stro, Steele, Wes, Brown and Wicks as our rotation, with Horton and/or Ferris ready to come on board when Stro is about done. Will also be great having Smyly for another year or two as the younger ones make the full transition to the Bigs. Taillon can become the league's most expensive long reliever/spot-starter/cheerleader...

Solid lineup today, probably the best they have to battle McClanahan. I’d still love to flip Seiya and Dansby in the order, but that’s clearly not happening.
