*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Great win tonight. Great job by Stro. Timely hitting. Superb defense. And terrific to see Leiter come through in a high-leverage situation for the save.

Only bad news came down on the farm: Horton took the L at South Bend as he continues to adjust to high-A (8K and no walks, though), and both Thompson’s got rocked badly at Iowa. Hopefully Wes, Assad and maybe a few others will be ready if and when called-upon…

Didn’t know or hear much about this guy
They dumped a lot of money into him. Sadly it sounds like a lot of money dumped onto a kid, and who knows who is around him and accessing it kind of deal. Pure speculation, but you hear horror stories about the IFA kids. And , they are kids.

That’s because he was a teenager signed in Jan 2022 that was working out at the international baseball complex and hadn’t come stateside yet. Cubs apparently referred to him as a “former minor leaguer”, so they either cut him over this or had released him prior.

Great team win tonight. Twitter had the Cubs down 87 to -6 based on just the starting lineup, but the guys people complained the most about did get on base 6 times in 17 PAs, so I’ll take it.

Thompson just needs time. It would be great if he re-found his groove next week, but he hasn’t been right for a while. His velo was off in spring training and then early in the season he was getting by with iffy command, walking more than normal and getting away with some hard-hit outs. Over time, he couldn’t clean the command and that’s why he’s where he is. He just needs to work in Iowa for a stretch. He’s probably trying to fix everything all at once and he really likely just needs to get back to the very basics and build from there.

Not at all worried about Horton yet. He’s well ahead of projections and, as you point out, still seems to be commanding the baseball. He actually pitched very little in college, so while he has incredible stuff, he still has a lot to figure out when it comes to getting quality hitters out.

Ah, it was Bill Murray’s brother (Joel?) doing the 7th inning stretch.

And yeah, Sanchez got hung out on that pop up, but that didn’t slow Joe. Gary clearly not a favorite of Girardi’s.
I did not know that Joel Murray was the voice of Chester the Cheetah for 10 years until I looked him up. He was also in Shakes the Clown before a decent TV career.

Sanchez and Girardi were together in NY, right? Maybe some repressed anger came out?

Rucker? Nah. Let’s all piss on the grave of Nick Madrigal.
I like Nick, but he’s not a fit for this team. I hope he gets his bat cooking at Iowa and the Cubs can ultimately pair him with a low-minors arm for a bullpen piece at some point. There’s absolutely a place for Nicky 2-strikes in the majors somewhere, just not on this roster.

Rucker being optioned, I assume...
It was always going to be a position player going down because the Cubs were only carrying 12 pitchers. Hendricks brings them back to the 13 max. It will be fascinating when Heuer comes back in about a week, though - there’s a 40-man spot to clear. Will they DFA someone on the active roster? Even if Boxberger winds up needing the 60-day IL, there would still be the question of who to send down. Rucker likely is at risk.

Good thing they kept Rucker. Need that 8th bullpen guy to throw the other team batting practice. Maybe Barnhart can be their 8th bullpen arm; he looks better than some of our pitchers, and it might make up for his .189 BA.

I’m fine with DFAing Barnhart by 7/4 if Amaya performs in Des Moines. He gives you nothing offensively and he isn’t in the long term plans.

Not even close….the Taillon contract, even if it goes to complete shit is 4 years, $68M. That’s not going to prevent them from doing anything. $17M in 2026 is nowhere near $23M in 2021. I also think he’ll recover and be a serviceable starter for the bulk of his contract…but if I’m wrong, it’s not catastrophic.
I sure as hell hope he can turn it around. Otherwise, worse than eating up $17M/yr would be him taking up space in the rotation and not giving our up-and-comers a chance. Even now I'd rather have Wes taking the mound every 5th game and maybe going through some growing pains; he obviously has Major League stuff, and his numbers wouldn't be any worse than Taillon's. It would help more with his development than staying at the AAA level IMHO. Now we have Brown ready to be in the bigs this year, with Wicks and perhaps others ready to be starting in the bigs next season. Need spots for them. Taillon could end up being a really expensive middle reliever...

If I am Ross I'm telling someone to lean into a pitch to try and knock Greene off his rhythm. Or, see if someone can violate the sacred unwritten rules of baseball and bunt for a hit.

Girardi in the broadcast booth right now.

In town for a job interview?
Gross, no. He’s a regular in the booth. I’m not a Girardi fan based on his time in NY and Philly. Not opposed to moving on from Ross, but the fan calls to fire him today aren’t going to accomplish much of anything immediately, most likely.

Didn't know that. I was channel surfing during innings of watching the B1G tourney.

Interesting interview with Boog Schiambi on Inside The Clubhouse on the Score this morning. If you have the Audacy ap you can listen to it. But, he talked at length about how Madrigal simply did not have enough tools to be a MLB player at this point. He's a contact guy in an era where you had better hit .315 if you aren't going to supply any power. To Madrigal's credit he also talked about how the Sox probably rushed him forward without developing him correctly.
He also seemed to throw a little something at Morel. He gave him credit for being at the park early and working very hard on multiple positions, but said he's a 23 year old DH at this point.

Yeah, on Morel, they want him to become a Ben Zobrist type of utility player but his glove can be very suspect in instances. Coming through the system I always heard his best position was 3B and he doesn't even play there. Gonna be interesting to see how all of that plays out but i hope his bat continues to produce.

The Cubs better win these last 2 against Cincy because their record is likely to take a beating in the 2 weeks following; 3 with TB, 4 in SD, 3 in Anaheim, and then 3 in SF. That 10 game road trip looks ominous the way they have played on the road lately, 3-13 in their last 2 road trips IIRC. I keep thinking the schedule will ease up at some point but the further they slide, all of the teams they will be playing will have better records. Could really use Bellinger back in the lineup.

I’m thinking more and more that it’s less about them wanting Morel to be Zobrist and more that they don’t really feel comfortable with his defense anywhere. He came up a natural 3B, but it seems they’re pulling out all the stops to avoid playing him there. Him in RF yesterday was a disaster.

even novice fan could see Madrigal was not a MLB player. I assumed he had nudes of the Cubs GM.

There was a small window for him to have value and he showed signs for a couple stretches, but nothing long enough to justify the playing time he’s been getting. When he first came back from injury after the All Star break last year, he went on a run where he probably hit .340 over the course of several weeks (before getting hurt again). His D at 2B is adequate at worst….but he’s just never going to be a 3B and while I think there are some teams that could put his profile to use, the Cubs aren‘t one of them.

if Taillon struggles tonight should Cubs send him down?

Guy has been absolute garbage
Can you imagine the embarrassment of sending him down?

Never gonna happen, but they probably just put him in the bullpen for long relief if it gets to that.

LOL. Taillon is a veteran - he doesn’t have options. If Cubs don’t want him taking up space on the roster, they’ll have to concoct an injury. He’s essentially untradable, and if they put him on waivers they’ll lose him to a desperate team and eat the $68M left on his contract

The issue is the Cubs whiffed on him just like the Sox did. They thought they were getting a steal in the Kimbrel deal.

What a colossal waste of money

I hate to say it, but the Reds seem to have some very good and pesky hitters. 2 games aren't a huge sample size, but they are clutch hitters as well.

Schiambi said his arm slot has been too inconsistent at 3B on his throws. I think it’s CF or DH for now. He makes bad reads in the corner OF spots.
