*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

The Cubs will never win anything as long as Happ and Suzuki are taking up roster spots.
They aren’t the problem. You can argue they should have waited to extend Happ, but they aren’t losing because of those two guys. 3B has been a black hole, as has been C. And, neither of them is a starting pitcher.

such an awful signing

ERA near 7.0 and he throws the straightest pitches ever, zero movement.

pretty much a guaranteed loss every 5 games

His stuff is so straight it makes Farnsworth’s look like a Chris Carpenter curve in comparison.

Cubs have 3 All Stars: Steele, Stroman, and Swanson. I had hoped that Hoerner would have been named as a reserve. He is having the best season as a positional player, IMO.
He’s in a tough spot. Arraez has been flirting with .400 and a few other 2B are also having very good years. The one I thought had an outside chance is Morel. He was down for a stretch, but he has great numbers and his walk/K rates have been progressing in a positive direction, and that’s been his biggest source of struggles.

Just a few more years.
He’ll ultimately right the ship, he has too much proven track record not to….but tonight broke me on him for the near term. He needs a phantom IL stint or a run in the bullpen. He has to step back. It‘s just not working. If the Cubs were to DFA him (they won’t), he would absolutely pitch well again somewhere else.

I’d say IL him, then send him to Arizona to work it out. He isn’t suffering from a loss in velocity from what I can tell. He’d get snapped up in a second if they DFA’d him. His track record is too long, and he’s pitched in big games.

Exactly. He’s in a horrendous, self-feeding downward spiral, but there doesn’t seem to be any real change in stuff. His cutter is getting hammered and lefties are hitting him generally, but like you said, the velo isn’t off, the movement isn’t even terrible...but it no longer matters because it’s just not working at all. The HR was actually on a pitch the hitter really shouldn’t have swung at - Jamo’s results aren’t due to luck, and also he’s had nothing but bad luck.

Sounds like he needs a week with Dr. Phil. He’s stuck in a shame spiral.

Just buy Ohtani in the off season, don’t care about the cost . He’s two players, he will sell merchandise and tv subs. Besides that, bullpen and 3B

I don't pretend to watch every game but for all the widespread dumping on Madrigal that has gone on here he sure does a lot of good things when I watch. I don't think he's great or anything but when he's healthy I'd much rather see him out there than a lot of guys the Cubs have had taking up a roster spot in recent years

I don't think he has a future with this team as they become contenders, but I've supported him more than anyone on this board. He's had a heck of a 15-game stretch for a light hitter:

.356 BA
.964 OPS
8 RBI
5 SB
0 errors (I think; he has 1 E at 3B this season, don't know when it was)

NM playing well can only help the Cubs, both on the field and in the trade market.

Cool. So are you rooting for the Cubs, Reds or Brewers this season?
Yes. In 2021 the Cards were 69-68, finished 89-70. In '06 they were 83-78 and a wild card. Won the WS. In '11 they were 50-47 late July, won the WS going away. In '64 in July were 47-48, finished 93-69, destroyed the Yankees dynasty in the WS...tell me you don't know anything about the Cardinal's history without telling me you know nothing about the Cardinal's history...

The most relevant part of Cardinals history is their fans are consistently the most white trash and racist in MLB. Saying they won the '11 series "going away" after being down 3-2 is comedy though, thanks for the chuckle

Don’t give a sh*t about the Cardinals history (all I remember is that they lost the ‘85 Series). And you still haven’t answer the question.

8 walks to the bottom half of the roster.
6-0 when I got home this afternoon. Then 6-3. I sat at the dentist for an hour for a check up, and didn’t bother to check the score until I turned on KXIC in my car as a deeply dejected Pat Hughes have the recap.
DISAPPOINTED!!
