*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Disappointing for sure, but traveling after the ATL series and then trying to play again the next night is a tough, exhausting emotional rollercoaster. 162 games and there'll be days like this. The Cubs have won 6 straight series despite losing the first game in 4 of those. I like our chances of winning the next 2.

Edit - Assad needs to be a starter the rest of the season. Much like Ross said about Suzuki, these games down the stretch are too important to worry about contracts and egos. Smyly needs to accept his new role as a (really expensive) lefty bullpen specialist, which is what the team needs anyway. Wes or Killian can slide into the #5 spot until Stro returns (hopefully back to pre-injury form).

Side note, my Tauchman t-shirt was sitting in my mailbox this afternoon. Can't wait to wear it.

Cubs apparently gave up on Ryan Jensen. Claimed off waivers by the Mariners. Tough to get absolutely nothing for a 1st round pick from 4 years ago. I was hoping he'd turn it around.

Welp, 40-man is down to 38. Wonder what the team's plans are...

I’ve heard some in the org saw this one coming and that Jensen was maybe not the world’s nicest individual. We’ll see if any more comes out, but the Cubs are at a point, especially with pitchers, that they will have to make some cuts one way or another before next season. I like the 40-man freedom, especially if they lost their faith in Jensen. Remember that it was after the 2019 draft that the Cubs overhauled their whole org.

I guess the Cubs really wanted him outta there and the Mariners must've known it. Might not be so bad for RJ, who will get placed on the active roster of a competitor. Looks like he could be making his MLB debut against the Orioles; tough spot. As far as the Cubs go, it gives me that much more hope that the team expects Boxberger to be back and effective in the near future, and that the org is also leaving the option open for a waiver wire addition of their own, if not a promotion from within (B. Horn and L. Little are both Rule 5 eligible in Nov and the top candidates to be 40-man additions, anyway).

This is the same reason I didn't get too worked up about trading DJ Herz. The Cubs system is doing a much better job at acquiring and developing arms. Herz and Jensen were both expendable.

Morel batting leadoff? I don't understand the Cubs lineups at all. Do the analytics generate these lineups?

I've really been hard on the guy but he's much better the last month.

He's still not worth the money they are paying him, but at least he's not getting lit up.
In theory, if Taillon pitches like he has for the past 6 games for the next 3 years, that 2026 salary of $18M will be a huge bargain.

Adrian Sampson released by the Rays. Ouch! What a difference 12 months makes.
There was a blurb about this deal on BN a few days ago. The Rays picked up the remainder of his salary for this year, and got IFA money in return. The Rays knew they were dumping him when they traded for him. It was an accounting move.
He's been injured most of this season, I believe.

JFC, McNeil was choked up on the bat, and still hit it over the wall.
Pitch #2 from Wesneski barely missed being a homer.

Bunt there made no sense... with Morel and his high K rate coming up next, you gotta give your team as many chances to drive the run in, not give away an out.
