*****Official HORT Golf General Discussion Thread*****

Alright, I was just going to walk into golf galaxy and see what they say but I'll try Hort first.

I've broke 2 drivers in the last 12 months and I'm not sure if my problem is the swing or the shaft.

First driver, Titleist 917, bought is used had a medium shaft. Snapped the head off the club about 4 inches up from the hozzle on the downswing of a drive.

I figured it was old a a flimsy shaft for My speed so I bought a

Taylor made sims2 with a fujukura atmosphere stiff flex shaft.

Last night it broke at the hozzle after contact with the ball.

My natural swing is an ugly slice and I think I've over corrected to play a big draw and I'm breaking them because I put to much pressure on the toe.

I'd ****ing know, any help would be appreciated.

My new TaylorMade Stealth irons finally came in. Bit surprised at my fitting that they were the winners but felt nice. Haven't had them to the range yet but hit a few 9 irons on the sim when I picked them up. Was averaging 175-185. Now... The loft (37) is basically a 7.5 iron on my old set, but that's still adding 10 yards over my old 7 (34 degree). I may need another wedge.
A 185 yard 9 iron? Jeez. How do you manage your club gapping from driver on down if your 9 iron is going 185? Seems that you would crowd the top end of your bag, have some overlap there, and the bottom end of the bag would have some gaps.

My club gapping is something like this:

Driver: 250-265
4w: 215-235
7w: 195-215
4i: 185-195
5i: 175-185
6i: 165- 175
7i: 155 - 165
8i: 140 - 155
9i: 125 - 140
PW: 110 - 125
GW: 50 - 110 (A lot of 1/2 to full swing shots)
54*: I don't full swing this club, pitching and chipping only. Used to like it for 70-yard shots but lost the touch on that recently and prefer a partial GW shot from that distance now.
58*: Exclusively sand and maybe a pitch or chip depending on lie and other conditions

This all depends on weather conditions, wind speed and direction, humidity, etc.

Maybe it is how you have your bag set up? Something rubbing or banking the shaft causing minor damage that weakens it and leads to a break point.

I've thought about that and how I put my clubs I to and out of my truck. Obviously they have bounced around but I'm not a super caveman about it.

A long time ago I had a 14 slot cart bag but the dividers were not full length.

So I bought 14 tubes so they would come out easier.

Well, the top ends of the tubes rubbed on the shafts and created wear marks.

I'll never do that again.

That's what I was thinking.

If you can hit your 9 iron 185 yards you probably don't need Stealth irons.

Common golf equipment sales tactic anymore,.. De-loft the irons to create impressive improvements in distance and then sell people more wedges than anyone ever realized they needed...

A sales guy tried that with me once a few years back. I was hitting a bunch of Mizuno 7 irons ranging from older to newer models. MP-32, JPX 850 Forged, and JPX 919 Hot Metal. The MP-32 and the JPX 850 were going about 155 on the monitor. The 919 Hot Metal flew 165. The sales guy was, see how the Hot Metal went the farthest! At which I thought, but didn't say, yeah, that's because it actually has the loft of a 6 iron.

Not sure. Was not expecting that result. But that was just a few swings on the sim. Will see what the distance is on actual grass. Before I had a decent gap between my 3W and 4H. Hoping it's closer with the new (gently used) 3W/4H I bought. I think I'm gonna have to add a 52 degree (SW is 56) as the new AW is 49 degree.

I tested a bunch of irons at Golftec and surprised me to end up with the Stealth as well. I was swinging the 8 iron and was consistently at 185 yards on the sim, averaging about 120 ball speed. The set only had 5-PW which is annoying so need to supplement that. Ended up with the Stealth driver as well, ball speed around 160, don't ask which direction it goes though. Pretty happy with the clubs so far.

The lofts are silly anymore. And they still weren't as strong as the new Callaways.

It's not a sales tactic. New equipment launches much higher at lower lofts with the added distance. If you're hitting a 9 iron at 6 iron flight then there is a big problem with your fitting. Go to someone who will look at all the factors to get the proper ball flight, distance and, most importantly, dispersion.

You don't get really steep and slam it into the ground sometimes do you?

Throw your clubs after a bad shot?
No. Not really and one of my fixes to stop the slice was to tee it up higher than I probably should have to swoop at it more than chunk down on it.

I just went into golf galaxy over lunch and got thier opinion.

Rough figures

Using 9.5 loft

275 carry

290 overall

2200 spin.

155-160 ball speed

110 ish club head.

They notice this one was broke inside the hozzle which likely meant it was from me healing the ball regularly.

Upgrading to an extra stiff hazardus.

Another thing the guy noted was I'm very fast throughout my swing fast back fast forward, which is something I have been trying to slow down and think about so I don't open my hands as much with the driver. This fast back fast forward puts a shit ton of torque on the club.

Thanks for thr input hort. Hit em straight.

I know all about that, the COG, higher launch, dispersion, etc. Except he didn't bring any of that up, just made the distance argument.

They make shafts for hard loaders.

As I said, get with someone who uses all the factors. I was merely explaining why the extra distance is not a sales tactic.

Jeeeeebus…..Is there anything more frustrating than when standing up to a shot, and having no phuquin’ clue what’s going to happen? (I can’t think of it, if there is……..a shank excluded, of course.)
I go through this shit every sooooo often and eventually it works itself out……eventually. It’s always an “alignment thing”….or more often than not….but piss poor alignment leads to a multitude of sins……and too often I can tell the first 12” of my take-away, I am screwed! That's where I am today….it’s been lurking for a little over a week and it really came home to roost this morning…….,Ruined a great day for a walk!
The bad thing is once my boyz find this out, I will wake up mornings with taxis in my driveway wanting to take me to the golf course. Meanwhile, I will work on my alignment….maybe even go hit some balls……but in the meantime, I hope the market stays strong and I will read my Bible ands search for internal strength.
God….I love this game!

I’ve gone through a few cycles with wedges and my go to for 70 yards in is my 60 degree Callaway Jaws Raw. I have a 54 but rarely use it now. I have a 48 Jaws I use all the time for 70 - 130. I recently put my 64 Cleveland back in the bag for tight lies around the green.

I carry 3 wedges now because manufactures have changed lofts on clubs over the years and todays irons are (much) stronger than irons were made 40 years ago. I have a PW that is 44d, a Gap that is 52 and a SW at 56d. I find 60d wedges are just confusing the issue…,and a 64d….I can see NO value in it…..techniques and mechanics are superior to equipment…..and you can only carry so many golf clubs in your bag.

Another former Nole with a PGA Tour win. Ho hum.

Is this the thread for Open picks, or will @St. Louis Hawk be starting a thread of his own??

I’ll throw out my usual terrible betting thoughts tomorrow in this thread

Important tip sports fans - lock for the first round is WED night at 11 pm Central on DK I think.

Double check your book.

Last major of the year and then on to college fb!

No Rory? Dude's playing great golf right now.

Agreed. But can’t bet them all, and pricing for this major is different on DK this week.

I usually adjust just before lock based on ownership in GPP’s. Right now, Rahm is looking to get squeezed and if I can get a low owned top 3 player like Rahm, I will pick that up.
