*****Official Iowa @ Little Red game thread*****

My only gripe is why they even bothered to start calling Nebraska for touch fouls late in the game when they opted not to earlier in the 2nd half...........................just sayin, CEDHawk.
I can understand that but even a perfectly officiated game wouldn’t have changed the outcome. Iowa looked completely un-prepared to beat Nebraska’s defensive game plan. Iowa did nothing to win this game. Yes, all the injuries hampered them but they still should have beaten Nebraska.

If Nebraska is true teaming and sagging in the lane that much and Iowa can't hit a 3, Iowa should be getting shots from 15 feet. Instead, they just kept jacking up 3s and just kept shooting them. Pemsl even shot 1 three point shot. That's ridiculous.

They settled for a few threes where they could have taken a dribble in but not many. Most guys are better catching in rhythm from 3 than dribbling in and shooting off the dribble.

I really didn't have a lot of problems with almost all of the 3 attempts (except Pemsl's). They just didn't make wide open shots.

I agree it's a good strategy. However, you can't start trying to force it inside into a double team because you are missing wide open shots. You have to take what's given.

Joe T's defender was sagging off UNDER the free throw line. He had 17-18 footers available. He has to take those. Has to.
And you have to make some. Unless you're Shaq, I don't know how you play high-level collegiate basketball without at least a mid-range game.

Joe T NEEDS to put up 100's of shots at practice and figure it out.

I don’t care how shitty Iowa was tonight. The refs shouldn’t get a pass. Nebraska went 20 minutes of game time without being called for a foul. That is ridiculous
Not really. Connor didn’t drive it nor should he, really, given the logjam created by packing around Garza. Joe T didn’t drive it given guys sagged 10’ off him. Joe W isn’t a guy who knows how to draw fouls with savvy.

It’s pretty easy to go 20 minutes without fouling when the other team is passing around the perimeter and shooting mainly threes. What’s ridiculous is Iowa not doing a better job MAKING the refs call fouls and doing a better job to get to the free throw line.

It's you. He has the right attitude! He's pretty good as a freshman. Gonna be a great player.

I agree. I've been harsh on him tonight but there's no denying the kid wants to win and competes hard.

He is a true freshman in the big ten and will be a great player for us. He just has to work on his jumper.

JoeT not being a good shooter is a a big problem...but you look at that Iowa team with Connor, Bakari, JoeW as only other guards...you don't really have enough good 3pt shooters for anyone to have to worry about. JoeW in normal game is a 3pt I don't think Iowa is going to win very often if Fredrick is out. Certainly if JoeW is off from 3pt line, the team is in big trouble.

Well that depends on what a perfectly-officiated game would look like.

If it meant more FT opportunities for Iowa, then I would disagree with your assessment.........

PAYBACK FOR FOOTBALL...

They know nothing about basketball.....iowa has 35 guys out but they have no clue..

And Nebraska played with 7 scholarship players. Doc Sadler has a way of throwing junk defenses out at teams. It worked tonight. And Hoiberg is one of the best in the business on the offensive end. Nebraska might have 3 more wins left in them.

Okay.....

They literally called Nebraska for putting a hand on an Iowa player as they were driving to the basket in back to back possessions late in the game.

You wanna go back and tell me that didn't happen at all the rest of the game, particularly in the 2nd half when we had 1 foul for most of the half when we weren't actually settling for 3s anymore?

Wheezy gets hot and Fran sits him down for a rest. A 5 minute rest. Want to rest him wait until he cools down or drops. Fran does it all the time to players that go on a run.

Yep, debbie outplayed iowa with what they had. Enjoy it..

They got to even it out as much as possible so it doesn’t get noticed by the league

It appears Fred has Fran's number yet again. 5-1 in college games as a coach. I have thought about going to the game when Nebraska plays at Iowa but didn't figure Nebraska would be in the game to make it competitive. Could be a different story but wouldn't surprise me if it isn't.

Iowa didn’t do anything to draw fouls. They missed a bunch of wide open threes. The shots Iowa missed down low we weren’t fouled on for the majority. I just have a hard time complaining about the officiating in any game, let alone a game Iowa lost all on their own.

Honestly, looking at the body language of Hoiberg, you could tell he knew he might as well get a lottery ticket after tonight with how lucky they were that Iowa shot that poorly from 3 given how many open looks they had.

That isn't something their staff "knew" or was anticipating going into this game. That was absolutely hoping for the best with that strategy, one they would not have employed if Iowa had all of its capable shooters in their lineup.

There's no f***ing way they'd say, hey let's have Jordan Bohannon get 10 open looks from 3 because we don't want Luka Garza to score 40 on us...................

Iowa will still go dancing imo. Just need to get healthy. Nebraska May get to 10 wins. But if he stays long enough I think Hoiberg will do good things at NU.

But how big of a hole do we dig while CJF is out?

Who else can we get back healthy? Just CJF? Connor is sick, but played well

Please, please, please stop with the officiating nonsense. Hawks BLEW it in the worst way. Played terrible.

I like how you're trying hard to defend your stance, I'll give you that.

It must be important to you as adamant as you seem to be about not wanting to accept the idea that the officiating influences any game................

Thanks for playing, though. :)

Is it nonsense?

I actually wouldn't have had a problem with the officiating had they not started calling Nebraska for ticky tack reach-in fouls down the stretch, but they decided to for whatever reason, and that actually pissed me off more than them letting the players play if you wore a Nebraska jersey in the 2nd half.

But yes, presume that I'm saying Iowa lost because of the officials even though I don't give a f*** if we'd won, I'd still be irritated by their inconsistency because it DOES F***ING MATTER.

Never said the officiating doesn’t influence games. Not once. Did it influence this game in a way where I can say it made Iowa lose? Hell no. That’s my opinion. You have yours and I have mine. That’s not going to change. I’m not going to blame refs. I leave that for cyclone fans and fair weather fans :)

It's certainly nonsense as it relates to this game tonight. Whatever gripes you have - the officiating played NO ROLE in this game and the outcome.

Hawks lost this one all by themselves.

I’ve always enjoyed your posts on here btw. I still will even though I disagree about the officiating. I see you just said you weren’t implying the officiating wasn’t why Iowa lost so I admit I was acting under the assumption you were implying you thought Iowa lost because of the officiating.

Never said the officiating doesn’t influence games. (You just don't like admitting it, since you said...."I have a hard time complaining about officiating in any game"...) Not once. Did it influence this game in a way where I can say it made Iowa lose? (Well it certainly didn't help them win......;)) Hell no. That’s my opinion. You have yours and I have mine. That’s not going to change. (Well, that's your fault.) I’m not going to blame refs. (Well, why would you blame anyone then? Players, coaches, fans.......it's no different. Why do they get flak, but not officials? Can't have it both ways.) leave that for cyclone fans and fair weather fans :)

The officials do not influence the game of basketball at all, ever. It's also a pretty cut-and-dry case too. Either they do influence every game, because they're there to enforce the rules.....or they influence none.......while also enforcing the rules of the game in whatever way they deem necessary.

Thanks for playing! :))

Meh.....

Joe T isn’t a crunch time game manager yet. He had trouble staying in front of Mack, which hasn’t been a big issue before. Big heart and learning, but there were a bunch of freshman mistakes tonight. Joe W couldn’t throw it in the ocean from deep and his defense has slipped from last year. Garza got mugged and missed some shots he normally makes. He had 18 rebounds and 16 points in spite of it. Ryan cooled off after a couple of good games. Conner played his normal game in spite of the flu bug. Bakari Evelyn also played, but didn’t provide much. Till and Pemsl aren’t going to give you plus minutes but you need their minutes when we’re this thin. They shouldn’t play down the stretch.

We have been talking injuries and depth all year and it bit us tonight. Bubble at best, NIT likely.

Evelyn tries to play faster than he's capable of while also doing it way too upright from an athletic standpoint and that gets him into trouble.
