**** Official Israel War thread****

Sacrificing yourself for the cause. A noble death vs.letting yourself waste away in a shit hole. You could look at this as mass murder/suicide death act.
They have the option to make it not a shit hole.
140 Sq miles of desirable land with 25+ miles of Mediterranean coast line.
Hundreds of millions in international aid coming in.
Other developed nations in the region that are willing to provide productive assistance as well.
Everyone wants to blame Israel but it's the people leading the Palestinians that are unwilling to make any attempt at building an actual functional society that are to ultimately to blame.

The reality is that while we'd all just love to see everybody play nicely at war within international norms, when you have a conflict that started the way this one did, it's going to beget a certain amount of raw civilian annihilation/collateral damage before that happens. There will come a time when we'll start talking about international norms again and people will actually be listening, but that's a couple of weeks away. That's why Biden didn't invoke restraint in his remarks today - doing so would be pissing in the wind, and what politician wants to have their own piss blowing back on them making look ineffectual?

If the would have just said screw it and built a hundred mega resorts and casinos....they would be rich as shit by now
well, todays journal piece was replete with references to 'tony neighborhoods' and 'upscale retail'.

To quote Negan. I'm not going to be no farmer. The powers in charge aren't capable of it. The only thing they appear to be capable of is intimidation. Not any different than the Taliban. Unless an Authoritarians has resources that they can squeeze out of the people in order to thrive. Saudi Arabia, Syria, Russia, China, Iran etc . They'll be shit hole countries.

used to have an aussie guy on my cycling team who did that for a living. A serious fellow.

Post service, he went to work for some conflict reduction NGO. So he goes into Africa where these two tribes are basically killing each other, and attempts to mediate. He talks to them and finds out it's basically a dispute over water or something. So he asks one side if they'd be happy with an agreement to use defined quantities. Sure, says side A. Goes to side B, same thing. They'd just been killing each other, and nobody thought to talk it out.

That's a really good point. A big part of Hamas' goal here had to be ensuring a continuation of the cycle of violence. Hamas' mandate, or popular support comes from the idea they are fighting/defending against their people's oppressor. If, heaven forbid, peace were actually to "break out," they'd lose that support, and all the prestige, money, and power that comes with it.

Hamas absolutely calculated on doing the greatest harm to ensure the biggest Israeli backlash, and thus solidify their support from their people.

Except she literally did the opposite of what you claim.

This isn’t a both sides thing….I hated it when Trump did it in Charlottesville to excuse white nationalism and I hate that I am seeing people do it with Palestine to excuse these terrorists.

"It also did not speak for the thousands of New Yorkers who are capable of rejecting both Hamas’ horrifying attacks against innocent civilians as well as the grave injustices and violence Palestinians face under occupation.”

To me that is a both sides statement…

I used to be slightly more pro Palestinian, not after these disgusting attacks…I draw very little line between Hamas and the Palestinian people who have historically sheltered and elect them to power.

These are her exact words - there is no both sides here:

“The bigotry and callousness expressed in Times Square on Sunday were unacceptable and harmful in this devastating moment," the congresswoman continued. "It also did not speak for the thousands of New Yorkers who are capable of rejecting both Hamas’ horrifying attacks against innocent civilians as well as the grave injustices and violence Palestinians face under occupation.”

Very good (and balanced IMO) article on the difficult tightrope walk both Israel and the U.S. face here:

Biden said he had told Netanyahu that, if the U.S. had experienced something like Hamas’ attack this past weekend—which has killed an estimated 1,000 Israelis, most of them civilians—“our response would be swift and overwhelming.” But he also urged Netanyahu to “uphold the Law of War.” (At least 900 Palestinians have been killed since the airstrikes began).

Attempting to distinguish the terrorists from the civilians that they govern, Biden said, “Hamas does not stand for the Palestinian people’s rights to dignity and self-determination.” He added that “they use Palestinian civilians as human shields” with “no regard to who pays the price.”

In an emailed statement to Politico, shortly before Biden’s address, National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said “we support Israel taking necessary and proportionate action to defend its country and protect its people.” (Italics added.)

Two days ago, Secretary of State Antony Blinken tweeted that he’d “encouraged” the Turkish foreign minister’s “call for a ceasefire”—then soon deleted the tweet, perhaps persuaded by colleagues that Israel needed not only to avenge Hamas’ murderous attacks but also to weaken or wipe out Hamas altogether.

Still, all three messages—Biden’s speech, the NSC’s email, and Blinken’s tentative tweet—reflect the complexity of this war. One problem is that Gaza is so dense, it’s impossible to destroy military targets—for example, Hamas armories or hideouts—without also killing civilians.

I still see that as excusing some of it because of what Israel has done.

I mean Hamas isn't attacking Israel just because they are bored and looking for something to do.

Not sure if you know this, but both sides of this conflict have been doing inhumane things to each other for, oh, a few centuries now.

this argument lost me when we found out they beheaded 40 infants. There is a reason Joe isn’t urging de-escalation here….Hamas and by some extent Palestine itself crossed a line by miles.

Why even add the part about “ as well as the grave injustices and violence Palestinians face under occupation.”?

To me it’s pretty clear what message AOC was trying to convey with that.

Please explain why democratic affiliated groups support the PLO/Hamas?
Not sure I can use big enough words for u to understand. Some are naive humanitarians who view the Israeli's as the oppressor. Others have actual Muslims in their voting block. Or folks that are former refugees of wars. Misplaced empathy. Why did so many American Catholics support the IRA.
They obviously identify with the folks that are caught in the middle of fighting Israel.
Republicans are mostly White and of Christian origin that hold the Holy lands as sacred. And support God's chosen people. So that's why Republicans as a tenet will never speak ill of Israel.

I am really lost on what Hamas end game is.

Outnumbered with nothing close to the military force. Completely dependent on the country you are attacking for electricity, fuel, clean water, food, toilet paper, construction supplies...and just about anything else.

Yea a few countries got them some missles...but its not like it's going to possible to reload their supply of missles and bullets.
that’s why it would seem these guys (hamas) are not the ones making strategic decisions, they are basically contractors for hire. sounds conspiracist but it feels like a piece to a larger reworking of world order

That both terrorism and occupation are bad for civilians?

Most rational people wouldn't find that controversial.
I’m not going to get into a disagreement over this. I think we would usually find ourselves in agreement on a lot of political issues, especially here at home…but not on this. To each their own….but I’m done with AOC and Tlaib over this….I hope they get primaried and voted out.

Isn’t Hamas the democratically-elected leadership of Gaza? How do you think the US would react if Mexico voted for an Al Qaeda government? I’m sure that wall Trump wanted would get built quickly.

At the same time, the West Bank stuck with the more moderate Fatah and for the most part have been able to live in relative peace.

To be clear, they often take more radical positions than I do on the Israel-Palestine situation.

I was actually pleasantly surprised at how sharp her rebuke of the pro-Palestinian protest in NYC was.

Dude. You've posted the same thing 20 times. They are not listening to you so stop giving them the time of day. You are banging your head against a brick wall and it's you that is not learning. They will not change their minds so stop engaging.
Keep banging away!

Passing on a false narrative. Refusal to learn. You're pathetic. STOP LYING.

WHERE IS THE $6 BILLION NOW?

The funds were not dispersed to Iran. Qatar's central bank is overseeing the funds, which are still in Doha.

"The facts are these — no U.S. taxpayer dollars were involved," Blinken told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday. "These were Iranian resources that Iran had accumulated from the sale of its oil that were stuck in a bank in South Korea."

Under the terms of the Iran prisoner deal, the money can only be used for humanitarian-related purposes, including purchasing food or other goods outside Iran for import, U.S. officials said.

Hamas wanted a massacre of Palestinians to keep the rest of the Middle East from considering peace with Israel. That is why they committed as heinous and vile atrocities they could so that Israel would have no choice. It explains why Hamas filmed these atrocities and posted them on social media.

Peace will never be achieved as long as Hamas runs Gaza. Israel has to go in.

No. MAGA equals a majority of republicans. Palestinian people do not equal Hamas as a whole. Some do and some don’t
Hamas major strong hold is in the Gaza with almost a 58 percent approval rating and a 48 percent t approval in the West Bank.

Face it, Palestine = Hamas

Interesting note, the ship is anchored off the coast. The newest US carriers are only able to dock at one NATO port, Souda Bay in Crete. Longtime stations like Rota, Naples, and Southhampton can no longer support a visit from a US carrier.
I hope like hell that the strike group is well versed and capable of deflecting naval and aerial drone strikes as well as the Chinese silkworm misfiles.!
They are traveling into harms way. Be on guard, brothers and sisters.

This is among the reasons I don’t want the government trying to censor people from social media.
Way better to let these folks talk so we better understand them.
Agree 100% with huge exception of for those that are bots or human trolls from enemy states pretending to be Americans (which is not the case here).

I hear you but it’s beyond frustrating reading lie after lie after lie without calling it out. I guess it’s my job…trying to get kids to learn various concepts is like pounding my head against a wall…but I’m not allowed to give up.
