Losing Spratley is the inexcusable one. Came down to Eggum telling him that him & 6th year McKee would have to wrestle off for the spot and Spratley wanted it outright. That was the wrong decision by Eggum.

I’m not upset in the slightest about losing Flynn or Wells this year.
Nagao was a head scratcher for me.

So, you tell a senior that took 3rd and 5th to go spit? I don't care if you are loyal and stuck with the program through Covid, but we have a young kid coming in so we don't want you anymore? That makes no sense whatsoever and that isn't how you recruit kids. You stay loyal to who you have, especially when they have AA'd TWICE....

Mind you, he didn't even stay loyal to McKee all the way, he said it had to be wrestled off, right? I mean that is about as open as a coach should possibly be...

Different weight class.
Vance Vombaur and Jamison are the same weight (141). The one who was lower ranked in the same recruiting class and stayed at Minnesota is now a 2x AA.
I’m aware they are at a different weight class. Since we are going through quality wrestlers that have left Minnesota recently i thought I’d ask about another one.

I understand that perspective 100%. Fact is though, it resulted in one more year of McKee who was often injured and went 0-2 at NCAA’s, instead of four years of a guy who’s already been a finalist two years in. So if I’m the coach’s boss, do I look at that as him making the right call?

If your point is the fact that Eggum can’t pay wrestlers as much as Cael can, you do not have to argue that with me.
He's a far cry from J also. They could've done better in picking a coach, IMO. Since he took over they've barely been competitive. Middle B10 most of the time. Without Gable, they'd finished middle every year.

You ABSOLUTELY look at it as the right call. He didn't just say I am going with McKee, he said what a coach SHOULD say, if you are the best guy at the weight I will have you wrestle over a 2 time AA, BUT you actually have to PROVE it by beating him in a wrestle off. That is absolutely what a DI Head Coach should do when bringing in a young guy that has potential, but still didn't AA for OkState that season and lost to Strickenberger twice leading up to his great run at NCAA's.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but you don't throw a 2x AA at that level straight to the curb without his replacement actually PROVING himself...

I don’t really care to think about “without Gable” because what’s the point. Take away every teams top wrestler, they will do worse.

I think Eggum is fine, I like him. 99% of wrestling coaches are a far cry from J Robinson.

Agreed. That would be like saying "without Spencer". The coach deserves his props for bringing in Gable, just like Brands does for bringing in Spencer...

It just isn't that easy to replace a coach that has won multiple team titles. That is why so few have...

He 100% made the right call. Criticizing a coach who expects his wrestlers to earn a spot is one of the silliest things I have ever read.
