Stubborn old guy take: NIL makes counting transfers on a team’s roster nonsensical. Advocate or critic, few fans of any school care that deeply who or how many athletes are displaced, only how much better the transfers make their team. Denying this fact doesn’t make it any less true.
And while that’s a somewhat frosty side of human nature, it’s also heartwarmingly natural to want the Glazier’s and Barraclough’s of the sport to wreak havoc on their brackets next March. ;)

This is it. In the current landscape, Recruiting transfers is recruiting. Guys on teams have gotten butthurt since the dawn of time when coach recruits a big-time stud high schooler at his weight. This is not much different than that.

It might be a win/win situation these strange daze. It’s possible for someone like ZG to enter the portal and get a bigger sack than their first school provided, no? (Maybe not leaving Iowa?)

Yea...it sucks and I really wouldn't be too pissed if ZG did indeed wreak some havoc. Kid did everything right except at NCAAs. If we could have pointed to a Rd of 12 finish and a loss to a stud to keep him out, then he might still be in business (like Murin). But he lost to a 26 seed in the first round who went 19-11 and lost to the guy who Buchanan majored.

ZG had a great year and it just didn’t work at nationals. He has one year left and if I were him, I would leave too. Totally understand that he wants to guarantee wrestling his last year and wish him the best. Entirely possible he could AA this year.

Say it with your chest. This is an anonymous message board. You heard it firsthand, right? What was the program that tried to recruit one of our guys?
Hamiti to OSU was a sure thing before he wrestled Olenik in the wrestle back placing match, and Thompson's name also came up in the same discussion and it was laughed off. Most thought Thompson (and his crazy mom) were on their way out...it seems a RS year and DT coming in changed the latter part of that conversation. No need to reveal who was doing the talking but the fact that Hamiti was a "do not contact" in the portal should be all the back-up you need. Henderson's name also came up but his military obligations were still uncertain at that point - again in the middle of NCAAs - and, boom, look what happened.

I wasn't nowhere near that conversation but if Smalls is reporting that, I would say no....he's not likely to incriminate OSU. That's the hand that feeds him.

And, I know this is a wrestling forum but because NIL transcends this sport, Iowa is a small player in this game if you take into account basketball and football. Let's look at what Michigan, PSU, OSU etc are doing in other sports while we're at it. Those fans have no business claiming righteousness when their school is prioritizing other sports and playing the same game.

Look at NIL per school, not per sport and then report back, @smalls103

Well now you know.

As for your 2nd part. I quoted you but wasn't specifically going after you if that makes sense? I haven't listened to your show, but was generalizing how biased the wrestling media has been towards a team that hasn't broken any rules. Especially really pushing rooms guys getting screwed over when so many teams have brought transfers in over their room guys. Hell Carl has brought transfers in over returning AA's and over top 10 p4p recruits who didn't even get a chance to see if they could be the man.

Who didn't get a chance? I'm also curious who Cael tried to recruit from the Hawks? Was that the "cornering Spencer in the tunnel" incident (lol)? (I'm not sure who else Cael would bother to try to recruit from Iowa over the last 10 years.)

Willie, be honest, did Michigan or PSU get this type of attention when they did the exct same thing just last year? or Okie st this year? come on man
everyone talked about Michigan's mass transfers. Everyone talked about Nagao and Truax. Everyone talked about Hamiti and Amine (Fish not so much), and Hendrickson was in the news cycle for a month.

Penn State also did not 'do the exact same thing'.

The 'attention' comes from anytime a school purportedly recruits guys that are not in the portal.

i'm not sure how this monumental fact eludes this board.

Thompson's mom IS crazy.

And yeah, like I said - if Coleman were the HC, they would be getting killed right now for Hamiti (rightfully so).

So what did PSU pay to get Truax? What did they pay to get Nagao?

we went over this a hundred times. i could never confirm.

You could never confirm because you couldn't get the information directly from Truax, Nagao, or the person(s) who paid them. Or, from anyone you consider a reliable source. Perfectly reasonable.

However, I'm certain you didn't get the dollar amount on Teemer and Buchanan directly from them, or the person(s) who paid them. But, somehow you're sure that it's "confirmed". You're basing this off of who you believe to be a very reliable source. That source is wrong, or has an agenda.

I'll give you another example. Last year I believe you said on your show Terry Brands applied for the North Carolina job. You probably believed this was true based upon who started this rumor. I know it's not true because I asked Terry. I also know who started that rumor. If I would have heard that info from that source, I would have believed it too because of who that person is.

Do you see how this works? Sometimes very credible, reliable, sources aren't correct, or they are purposely misleading. You never really "know" until you talk to the actual people.

I know you didn't go to journalism school, nor have you ever handled an informant, but keeping this in mind might help you in the future from reporting "confirmed" information when you haven't "confirmed" anything.

You're welcome.

Iowa is not a small player in NIL. They just aren’t a behemoth.

If there is poverty, lower class, middle class, upper class, millionaires, and billionaires; Iowa is probably a millionaire. They just can’t compete with those billionaires.

Don't believe everything Fellers says

truly an uninformed, scumbag thing to say. but right on brand for this outfit. y'all are miserable.
Would you consider yourself a Willie guy?
Do you not protect your own? Ultimately I am a me guy. Doesn’t mean I don’t support others, help others, etc.
Feels like a nerve was hit.

Honest question. Do you not see how people can be skeptical that you have a rock solid source for Iowa that shares 100% of the factual information……
But, with your connections and ability you can’t ‘confirm’ those same details at any other school and don’t really speculate other than ‘went there for less than Iowa offered’?

It is a stretch to think that is the case.

I notice this didn’t draw an immediate snarky response, like most everything else.

Fellers is a Fellers guy.

That’s a wee bit of an overreaction there eh Willie? Fellers that good a buddy of yours?

For those who might not know who Fellers is…Former Hawk wrestler, former HWC board member/donor and Sebolt club coach. His son Nolan is a damn good wrestler.

Fellers went from trying to fight Iowa State in Ames a few years ago to now being a past-tense Hawk... I have heard rumblings about him and Tom not seeing eye to eye, what's the scoop here?

I think athletes can contact schools. Just not the other way around?
But that's not what happened. Hamiti did not reach out to a school that had a freshman qualifier and the #3 PFP high school recruit in the lineup. Hamiti was approached and also offered (and receiving money). Hamiti did not, nor would he have reached out to OSU....he and Thompson grew up wrestling together and both are from the same area of IL (Joliet and Lockport are 15 minutes apart). It was the other way around.
