Hope Fran can find a stopgap center..how bout poaching cliff omoruyi of RU? Throw big NIL money at him...from what I hear RU not paying much if any to players.
Everybody is down in the mud so Iowa cannot compete without getting muddy.
Cliff might want to play Franball rather than RU slow plodding defensive ball.
He is exactly what Fran needs in the middle...rim protector who runs the floor. Fran specializes in maxing out stats for a guy like cliff..1st team all-league likely...nba draftee likely.
Go get'em Fran!
You can't gain confidence by sitting on the bench and Fran was not going to reduce the playing time of Kris or Pilip and keep them from increasing their stats. That's just the way Fran has been rolling these past years from Joe Wieskamp to Luka Garza to the Murray Twins to Rebraca.
Mulvey will get his chance next year.
When Keegan was a Freshmen he should have been starting by the end of the year, just as last year Kris should have been starting by the end of last year. Fran missed the opportunity to put a more athletic team on the court that may have changed the results of the last 2 NCAA tournaments but that's my opinion.
Having Mulvey playing this year would have given Iowa a low post player that may have help Iowa in rebounding and helped Kris and Pilip too, but that would have limited Patrick's court time and that wasn't going to happen.
Actually looks like he has decent bounce and can block shots.JoshO had already left last year and was only brought back because he had zero market value and Fran had open schollies as he usually does. While I think JoshO has the physical abilty to be a B1G center, he seems to not understand where he is supposed to be on offense....that drives Fran crazy if you mess with his offense...so no PT.
Mulvey also looked a little bit clueless like Josh...but he is super teammate and he does seem to be a bit of a rim protector. I would say one of the two bigs is gone...probably JoshO and Iowa has the money to give him a medical scholarship for long Covid and let him retire.
Braun sound like the likely pickup in off season...maybe he'll be okay but as just another Iowa kid, he's probably
another below the rim guy.
Assuming you mean Jameer Nelson Jr, and yes I agree... he looks really good...James Nelson Jr is the one they should be calling up and offering a blank check.
absolutely, don't know if I fat fingered that one or autocorrected. Thanks for the correctionAssuming you mean Jameer Nelson Jr, and yes I agree... he looks really good...
I think it's safe to assume they are. TOS has a Crystal ball to Iowa. Are we serious on Evan Brauns??
Thanks for the heads up.I think it's safe to assume they are. TOS has a Crystal ball to Iowa.
Take a minute or two to check out Braun's video. Looks like he's got some explosiveness and bounce.JoshO had already left last year and was only brought back because he had zero market value and Fran had open schollies as he usually does. His video is more impressive than his stats.Take a minute or two to check out Braun's video. Looks like he's got some explosiveness and bounce.
What are the roster constraints?Due to the current roster constraints, I don’t think Fran brings in Brauns unless he knows for sure that at least one of JO or Mulvey are leaving. Iowa will need to go after another big for a starting role I would think.
Brauns is pretty much a done deal I think. Are we serious on Evan Brauns??
Agreed, his video looks really good. His video is more impressive than his stats.
Right now we only have 1 open scholarship (Kris') unless others leave. So Brauns taking over a scholarship (assuming he's not a walk-on) would mean Fran needs someone to leave in order to go after a starting Big.What are the roster constraints?
Which is fine for a back up big/garbage man.His video is more impressive than his stats.
Hes not a scorer but is exactly the type of piece this years team was missing.Brauns is pretty much a done deal I think.
Agreed, his video looks really good.
An MVC fan, Drake fan as I recall, who has watched multiple Belmont games mentioned that Belmont ran a lot of their offense through the perimeter and not much through Brauns and down low.
Brauns looks to me like a solid defensive and rebounding center - at least for now. I'm pretty excited about what he brings to the team actually.
Agree 100%, I’ll take a center who can shot block, rebound and defend over one that can score. Rebraca was great defending his man but not much for helping out. This guy looks a little more lanky and bouncy.Hes not a scorer but is exactly the type of piece this years team was missing.
Just getting more defensive rebounds probably changes the outcome against Auburn.
If he's walking on, that's a dang good walk-on.From what I am hearing Even Brauns wants to transfer to Iowa, but Fran has said no scholarship is available, and maybe they can scrounge up some NIL money for him. Even and P-Mac are very close to the point they are planning on living together, so there's something going on with him possibly coming to Iowa, just not sure under what circumstances.
I think it means that the staff knows who is leaving, and have targeted positions of need, and they view Brauns as icing on the cake. Which, given his skill set, he would be. Maybe if some things shake out, then a scholarship is available. If he's walking on, that's a dang good walk-on.
Not having scholarships seems to indicate that there isn't going to be much roster departures. Not sure how I would feel about that as I was expecting at least JO and/or Mulvey to leave.
I will be very happy if Fran can bring in a 6-8/9 interior player, as long as he is strong, athletic, wants to rebound, and plays defense. Same traits in a 7 ft guy, would be even better, but I don't want a 7 ft stiff. I think we should be looking for a guy who can play starter's minutes next year, not a back up.Getting a consistent 3 point shooter is much more needed then getting a mid major undersized 6-8/9 center. Fran has gone this route before and what did it get us, zero, nothing.....it's been 24 years since Iowa has even sniffed the field of 16 and you poor slobs what Fran to go after a player that doesn't even have any kind of offensive game, but continue on your quest of making Iowa a continued laughing stock of the Big Ten.
I'd rather Fran have confidence in his 23 class of recruits to change the path of Iowa basketball then go out and waste a scholarship and promised playing time to a player that may or may not pan out.
Pretty much agree, although it may be that Fran thinks one of the returning bigs (likely Mulvey) can do 20 minutes a game. I'd really like to get a strong defender with some shot blocking capabilities that can elevate the team defense. Woodbury wasn't a shot blocker, but he made a tremendous difference in our overall defense.I will be very happy if Fran can bring in a 6-8/9 interior player, as long as he is strong, athletic, wants to rebound, and plays defense. The best thing Woodbury did was his screen defense and there were so many idiots on here complaining about why he was playing defense out at the 3pt line.Pretty much agree, although it may be that Fran thinks one of the returning bigs (likely Mulvey) can do 20 minutes a game. NoIf N.I.L. money can pay for tuition for walk ons, do scholarship limits even matter?
I agree. And I’m the guy who watched him play twice against Drake. He’s a poor man’s Rebraca, he’s certainly big and strong, but give me a 6-6 wing that’s an athlete for Gods sake. Every sweet 16 team has multiple. Guys that can guard multiple positions and get their own shot on the other end. We don’t even try to recruit those guys. And can we please stop saying Mulvey is a rim protector? There is absolutely zero evidence of that. He’s tall. That’s it. Put Freeman in right away next year. He can run the floor, play defense and score.Getting a consistent 3 point shooter is much more needed then getting a mid major undersized 6-8/9 center. To an extent. There's a lot of other perks of being on scholarship that Walk-ons can't get. I would imagine it helps in situations like Brauns where the player grew up wanting to be a Hawk. But I would doubt we see too many scholarship level guys take walk-on spots. Most guys want playing time and if there's 13 scholarship players already on the roster, that means there just likely is not much playing time available. NIL can't help that aspect of it.
FWIW, Temple's coach left. So Reynolds is likely to get a waiver granted to be immediately eligible. This is going to be a challenge but I like the idea of a consolidate list so I've updated to reflect Daniels and Reynolds.
