*** Official Transfer Portal-Palooza Thread ***

I agree. And I’m the guy who watched him play twice against Drake. He’s a poor man’s Rebraca, he’s certainly big and strong, but give me a 6-6 wing that’s an athlete for Gods sake. Every sweet 16 team has multiple. Guys that can guard multiple positions and get their own shot on the other end. We don’t even try to recruit those guys. And can we please stop saying Mulvey is a rim protector? There is absolutely zero evidence of that. He’s tall. That’s it. Put Freeman in right away next year. He can run the floor, play defense and score.
Before Mulvey is tossed aside and left for dead, I would like Fran to at least give him extended minutes in a couple of early games next year to see what he can do. He hasn't seen but mop up minutes with the other walk on's in the last 2 years to make enough of an opinion one way or another. I see a diamond in the rough, other don't, he should at least be given that opportunity to see what he can do.
If Ogundele is given that same opportunity, I'd be OK with that too.
I'm a equal opportunity bitcher....

As I recall, we were pretty close on Nickel the first time around, making his top 5. Here’s what he said about Iowa back in August 2021:

“I like the style of play they have, and the way Coach (Fran) McCaffery keeps his guys confident in the freelance offense. He lets guys create plays and never wants them to hesitate shooting the ball. As a scorer that's definitely the mindset and system you want to be a part of. He's also built a really good relationship with my family and I as well.”

It was going to be Iowa v VA Tech for him until UNC swooped in. He had an official visit scheduled with Iowa but I don't think he came since he had committed to UNC on his visit their the previous weekend.

I think Fran is definitely pursuing another big, wing, and guard. He must know that we are going to have some free scholarships available or why would he be recruiting these guys? I expect from his known recruiting right now that we may be seeing up to 3 scholarships opening up. I fully expect Josh O to be gone. Probably shouldn't have let him come back last year after declaring.

I would think that Fran is going to want to know answers soon on who's staying and who's going. It's unfortunately part of the business now where these end of year meetings need to happen ASAP after the season concludes in order for the coaching staff to build a roster.
Kris is the only one for sure that we know is open. I'd assume that Jelly's opens. After that it's wait and see mode.
To me every guy Iowa has reached out to has fit into 2 buckets: Bigs and 3 point shooters. Even some of the guys listed as forward here could be played as a big.

Yeah, I do not understand recruiting a 2/sg unless someone is leaving. JO definitely needs to move on.

Excellent points. I see bigs, wings, and guards being contacted so far. Wings and guards are all excellent 3 point shooters. I see that in common also. Good analysis on your part.

I saw a long list of schools that have reached out to Albany transfer Jonathan Beagle and was surprised to not see Iowa on the list. He played at the same prep school at Riley Mulvey and the two of them worked out together in the offseason.

Maybe Iowa just has some players they like better.

You can't take them all. With N.I.L. it seems to have become a free agent market. Jucos seem to be fading , will high school recruiting be next?

Not sure how close we were the first time around with Tyler Nickel because he never visited Iowa City.

Iowa offered on June 24, 2020. He committed to UNC on Sep 15, 2021.

Iowa was one of Tyler Nickel's top 5 schools. Maybe this time around we can get him to visit.

This is from Sep 15, 2021, the day he committed to North Carolina:

Brauns looks good in his tapes, but not against great competition. Definitely well put together, and seems to have the ability see the court to pass. Not sure I see him as a great starter, but certainly looks like he could play some very solid minutes at 5. He does have two more years, and could keep improving.
6'9 and a solid 240lbs. He can actually defend the post, rebound, and he passes well. His offense is pretty much around the basket. He fills a need on this team for sure.

We really could use a bigger, athletic 2 Guard (6'3 to 6'5") who can shoot the rock and play defense.

Not anywhere near my first choice but Eli King, ISU guard hit the portal today. Great athleticism, presumably can play defense, good size but sure didn't shoot the rock well at all last season.

Iowa was recruiting him hard out of HS. No idea if there has been current contact or interest.

So since I'm also a Drake fan I've seen Brauns play both games against Drake. His only position for the Hawks would be Center. Does not have a game outside 5 feet. In the Belmont offense he's basically a guy that sets a lot of picks out high and rolls to the bucket. They run absolutely zero plays for him. He's certainly big and strong. 6-9 240. Now Rebraca as some have said didn't have much of an offensive game when he got to the hawks, and look at him now. He's a beast around the basket and clearly our most improved offensive player. Braun already has the physical body to play the post, but he has a lot of work to do on the offensive end to fit into Fran's offense. Again, Rebraca did it, and I certainly think this rumor has legs, so hopefully Braun can improve his offensive game.
Wrong, if you watched any tape of Rebraca at North Dakota, he actually played more out on the perimeter and could make 3’s.

Well, Perkins fits most of that bill. 6'3 athletic, 33% 3pt shooter. Not a great ballhandler though.

Most college players aren't going to give consistent effort on defense when the coach doesn't base playing time around effort on defense.
