Most of Iowa's championships teams actually were juggernauts throughout the season. Kurdelmeier won 2 titles in 75 & 76, losing only one dual meet. Gable won 15 titles, going undefeated 7 years and losing just one meet in each of the other 8 championship seasons. Tom Brands has won 3 titles, and during those seasons lost just one meet -- going 68-1. Jim Zalesky's record is the abberation: He won 3 titles from 1998-2000, but lost 3 meets in '98 and 4 in '99. Iowa did go undefeated in 2000.Were the Iowa teams that peaked at NCAA's juggernauts throughout the regular season? Wasn't one of their best performances as a pretty significant underdog?
Winning as a significant underdog would probably apply to the 1998 and 1999 teams (OSU was undefeated both seasons and Minnesota lost twice in both years). Winning as a bit of an underdog would probably apply to 1997 -- when Iowa lost once to OSU but blew everybody out at the championships and set the all-time scoring record.
So, it's interesting. Kurdelmeier, Gable, and Brands have 20 NCCA titles. During those 20 championship years, Iowa won 355 dual meets and lost 10. Zalesky won 3 titles, and went 44-7 during those 3 years.
