Oliver Martin still considering different schools, waiting for a Stanford offer?

Lets be honest here. Some people on this board are all ready to say the staff dropped the ball. Regardless of what happens, the staff will drop the ball. In fact, if Oliver Martin goes anywhere but Iowa then it's already assumed that the staff dropped the ball. We are talking about a 3 star WR from Iowa here. A guy these same people would have blasted our staff for if he commits to Iowa because why are we taking a 3 star WR from Iowa when we could have a 3 star WR from Texas.

What I can guarantee you that won't happen is if Martin goes to East Lansing and does nothing in 4 years will these same people come here and say they really had Martin all wrong. That's not how they work.

I can't tell you how many times I have read on this board that our staff dropped the ball on a "sure fire" stud in the state of Iowa that went on to do nothing of substance.

So to answer your question, did the staff drop the ball? Nobody outside of the Martin family and maybe a few of our staff members will ever know the real answer. Maybe he commits to Iowa and gets ridiculed by our fans for not being good enough. Then you get your wish and the staff drops the ball that way as well.

Either way, I think they are sitting pretty in the "I told you so" category. Bottom line is if this kid really wanted to be a Hawkeye all he has to do is commit. The offer is there and if a 18 year old kid doesn't commit because he doesn't like the fact that his "dream offer" didn't come when he wanted it then that's not a kid that really wanted to be a Hawkeye in the first place.

I don't think first come always means first serve. Michigan snuck in and grabbed Karan Higdon from Iowa in the 11th hour last year, and Pierschbacher went to Bama after the Hawks were all over him early. So, I don't think you can say Oliver doesn't become a Hawk because they were not the first to offer. Unless of course, your a family friend and heard from his lips that is why Iowa is not one of his favorites. Kids go where they want, and not always where we want them to go. I for one am not going to lose sleep if he chooses to go elsewhere, he has his Hawk offer, if he wants it he will sign, if not, good luck to him. And you also have to take into consideration that you heard it on ESPN, a network that seems to be ridiculed here frequently.

So, you're saying Iowa dropped the ball?

I said it before. If an Iowa City kid doesn't want to run out of the tunnel at Kinnick than good riddance. We have out of state kids that grew up Texas or whatever fans that are FULLY committed and can't wait to suit up in black and gold. Reports say he grew up a Hawkeye fan. Seriously? If he's that butthurt over how long it took the coaches to offer him I seriously question his maturity level.

Iowa offered along with almost every other big 10 who has offered with in a 7-10 day span. Not like Iowa offered him months after other programs. I'm guessing if he chooses else where not cause Iowa didn't offer him a few days early as opposed to another school.

That being said Martin real intriguing case on recruit coming out of no where to garner some big time offers. If he picks Iowa be great if not be unfortunate but not a make or break recruit for this class.

Per ESPN. I'm watching the opening on ESPN and outta the gate Martin catches the first 2 passes. Then they show his schools of interest and apparently the Hawkeyes are not on his list. They show on screen his list of favorites as: ARMY, CMU, MSU, MINN, WMU, and Becky in that order. NO mention of Iowa. Now he has a Oregon offer?
If you have not been watching this broadcast from the Nike campus in Oregon it is pretty unbearable to watch w/ the 3 ESpin clowns announcing. Is there a bigger Dbag than Luginbil (sp)(( besides R. Munson ))? All are such SEC homers it's difficult to watch if your a fan of any other conference.

So anyway, here is the question.... If he goes elsewhere is it bc the Iowa staff dropped the ball as I posted in an earlier thread? Not bitchin' or complaining. Hope he comes to Iowa but cant help wonder why they were all over some kids that had relatively few offers but seemingly missed the mark on Oliver. They know what they want. We all get that but did they take him for granted?
So because EPSN didn't list Iowa means he isn't considering Iowa? I'll wait to hear it from him. Also, is he not considering Indy? You didn't lost them.

Even if he has been a Hawkeye fan for life, I see absolutely nothing wrong with exploring all of his options. And saying he is a fan can mean a lot of different things. My brother is a Hawkeye fan, but his fandom doesn't extend past going to a game or two every year in comparison to someone like me who pays for recruiting news. Just because he grew up a fan doesn't mean it's necessarily his best option either. If his goal is to get to the NFL, maybe Iowa isn't his best option as a receiver. If his goal is to get his college paid for and a high quality education, maybe there are a couple better colleges out there for him. If he wants the ball in his hands as much as possible, a place like Indiana would probably suit him better. The whole "grew up a Hawkeye fan" narrative is flawed and overused.

I don't think he should be upset over the timing of the offer, and I really do not think it will affect where he goes.

I also find it pretty funny that you are questioning the maturity level of someone who is not yet matured. What were some of your mature decisions at 17? Or are you, in fact, 17?

If he picks Iowa he picks Iowa.. Iowa never has been a wr hot spot, I hope he comes here. But I hope he goes where he really wants to be.

He's a 3 star WR aka possession WR period. They are everywhere. What separates him from the 4-5 stars is mostly speed - not going to take the top off the D like Holmes and size - not going to over power the CB and make for a tough 1 on 1 matchup like Smith from Mississipi. If Buckley hadn't gotten the AM offer and committed to Iowa his college choice would be irrelevant.

Hope he is a Hawk, but it has to seem highly unlikely at this point. The kid grew up in Iowa City--Kirk Ferentz has been the coach since he was born, he has likely been to many games, has seen everything on campus there is to see, including facilities, etc, and knows everything there is to know about Iowa football. It's not like he needs more information before making a decision on Iowa. If he wanted to be a Hawk, it seems like he would be by now.

So Holmes and Smith are simply possession receivers also, correct? They have to be based on your 3* logic

I luv how everybody has run with the narrative that Martin is not considering Iowa based on NOTHING but fabricated conjecture. You guys are literally making stuff up and then setting up a ridiculous echo chamber in order to slam whatever angle u can. Oliver is a hawk fan as are his parents AND he now has other intriguing offers to consider. Nothing more, nothing less. Hell, I had a hard time deciding what to have for breakfast this morning.

Well said, my friend, well said!

ESPN didn't even list him as having an Iowa offer in an article this week, nor did the article state that Iowa was even interested in him. Considering their lack of knowledge on his recruitment with Iowa, I'm not going to start panicking or blaming the coaches because of something ESPN said last night.

Looking at his ESPN profile, they do not list Iowa or Indiana as offers so of course they won't say he's considering Iowa. Who cares what ESPN thinks anyways. If you're not a Top 100 recruit maybe higher they don't have time for you especially if you don't have blue blood offers.

I'd say first hint of not taking this serious is that it listed army and cmu. You really think Iowa doesn't make top 5-6 from an Iowa city kid and central Michigan and army would? 2nd it's ESPN and if kid isn't interested in SEC, Ohio st,
Michigan or ND they lack any knowledge on the kid.

Holmes has 4.4 speed and Smith is 6'3" and can jump. Those are traits Martin has neither of.
Finished 13th overall at this recent camp as far as SPARQ score goes..2nd best scores amongst listed wr's..41.7 inch vertical jump.He doesn't have 4.4 speed nor is he 6-1 or above, but as far as overall athletic ability....I'd say he has enough to develop into a quality wr...

Can we all just wait until Oliver makes a decision before we begin the speculation or criticism as to the logic behind his choice?

I think he'd be a great get and I would be shocked if he actually went somewhere else. He's hot right now and taking advantage of all the opportunities that come with it, can't say I wouldn't do the same thing. In the end I can't see him throwing away a dream he's had for most of his life for something that is 50/50 at best.

Serious Opinion Question for y'all:

Who will end up being the better receiver? Boyle or Martin?

maybe he wants to get away from Iowa City. Explore new things. the offer is and was there sooner then anyone on here knew. He is his own man

You literally just said "He's a 3 star WR aka possession WR period." Last time I checked, Smith and Holmes were 3* receivers, making them possession receivers based on what you just stated. So which is it, are both of those WR possession receivers or are not all 3* WR possession receivers?

Also, Martin is 2.5" shorter than Smith, but has a 2.5" higher vert. He also ran his 40 (4.57 sec) .2 faster than Smith. He put up the 12th best SPARQ score out of 100+ of the best players in high school football at The Opening this weekend. TOS ranked him as a top 10 performer on offense in 7 on 7's yesterday (with 4* and 5* corners guarding him), outperforming several 5* receivers. Maybe it's just me, but usually "possession receivers" are guys who are limited athletically in my mind.

I agree with you. ESPN has been a joke ever since the day they got in bed w/ the SEC. My entire post was tongue in cheek. I'd like to apologize to those on this board that have no clue and lack a basic ability to catch the subtilty of satirical and sardonic interpretation. Its only a couple of posters here but they are always the 1st to blab incessantly.

I don't think that was his legit list. I actually feel confident he will commit to Iowa. It's the dog days of summer and I like many of you enjoy the banter and opinions here and the general Iowa FB discussion points.

BTW FWIW Oliver looked very impressive at this camp. Looks smooth, shifty, very quick and doesn't drop anything thrown within range. Gets open on DB's that look like blue-chip type guys. Even when he was blanketed and had a dude all over him he caught the ball! Also looks to have a very athletic body type. Not wirery like Hinkle and more muscular than Vandeburg IMO.

Go Hawks!

My thoughts exactly. I couldn't wait to get out of town when I graduated high school. Wouldn't blame him for wanting to try something different.

99th percentile across all graded skill sets!!!
Wow.
So much for this guy being a possession receiver that is just another face in the crowd? He ain't. Look for a shitload more offers coming in the days ahead. This hopefully will shut up his critics. We need this guy. He would be a HUGE get in this class. With Ferentz and Co.'s record at the WR position seems like a slam dunk IMO.

LOL. You're saying "good riddance" and questioning his maturity level because the young man wants to experience other unique adventures in life?

You sure are a pathetic individual
