Ono to Psu

No, your wrong.

Penn State was going to win championships with or without Ono wrestling in college. Ironically there are fewer and fewer Pennsylvania wrestlers in the PSU lineup. But go ahead and villainize the high school wrestlers who chose to leave the state.

Are you saying that Iowa and Oklahoma State should do the same? Recruit world medalists from other countries? If this practice proliferates do you really think it is good for college wrestling?
I couldn't care less. Is PSU only supposed to recruit PA kids? That's dumb.

You do know that international players come to the U.S. to play basketball all the time, right?

I've never villainized anyone for making the decision that they think is best for themselves and they're family. That's dumb.

Loved Kem. We know why he went to Iowa.

Lee did what he thought was best...as did DeSanto. So did Basset.

Was Bo because of money? Who cares?

You're upset because Ono went to PSU. He isn't stifling anyone. Kids get recruited over too. Transfer get plucked. It's how the new system works.

you are on an iowa board telling some else they are butthurt,c'mon man
Fair enough - changed. But the point remains the same.

BTW, PSU football brings in foreign players as does basketball. Should I feel bad for U.S. kids as a result? Thought never even crossed my mind. Maybe women's VB does too...I don't know.

Hey man. I'm on record saying Iowa should have gone after Masoumi 2 years ago.
You were ahead of your time. One thing I've been thinking about though is that all American wrestlers must transition from Folk to Freestyle but I don't ever remember an accomplished Freestyle guy transitioning to Folk at this level. It will be very interesting to see how Ono does in all three positions, especially bottom. I know he is a great athlete but almost everyone struggles on bottom for a couple of years. We will see.

LMAO... listen to what every wrestler says about the "tests" that they go through. I am done talking about it. I don't want to get banned. As a PSU fan you are allowed to keep going though...
I get it, I just think the scrutiny is too great to get away with it. Especially if you're in the spotlight. I'll guess certain more mesomorphic body types will get that look over the skinnier guys. But all of these guys are very lean, whether they're stockier or skinnier.

Whether he went to PSU or Iowa or anywhere else, it’s backwards. It’s taking an athlete who’s already reached the pinnacle of the sport and having them go against, on average, lesser competition.

Like GS? I know what you mean though. You have to ask yourself why? Money may be a factor.

is it better to have better wrestlers in college?

that's your question?

Just a question for those who know. If Ono established residency in the US, can he wrestle for the US internationally? Would he be a direct competitor against Lee for a spot on the team unless they ended up in different weight classes? Not saying that Lee couldn't beat him, its just something I have been thinking about.

I have made my view clear. Do you think Iowa should start recruiting world medalists to compete at the NCAA level? Do you think that would benefit college and USA wrestling?

yes. I think Iowa should look for talent everywhere.
yes. I think college wrestling having better wrestlers is better for college wrestling.
yes. I think USA wrestling would benefit if world champions were training with them regularly.

How many foreign NBA players or players in top European leagues leave to play basketball in college?

Oklahoma State has a talented Japanese wrestler on their roster now. But he is 19 years old and not a world champion

Freestyle has limited competitions and, unless it’s the world championships or Olympics, the coverage and fan support are not comparable to NCAA wrestling. A young man has a chance to challenge himself in a new style, compete regularly and receive a free education. He said himself it’s been his dream. Good for him for pursuing it.

And even better that it’s a world champion doing it for your favorite team. It’s amazing that no PSU fan can even attempt to think critically about this

Of course it’s more fun that he chose PSU. But nothing I wrote is incorrect. PSU has international athletes on their hockey team and have had international basketball players. If Ono had chosen to wrestle for another school, I would be bummed but not outraged for the “sake of the sport “

Did you really say "challenge himself"? Lol. Now that's funny. Hey good for you guys plugging in a reigning world champion from Japan into your lineup, everyone else would do it if they could, but be real... him coming to the U.S. to wrestle college-level competition is like Kramer being in the same taekwondo class as the 9-year-old kids. Lol.

Nothing against him being international at all. But your hockey and basketball players aren’t world champions going against much lesser competition

Sure, but others are missing out on opportunities. Someone else is not getting a free education. An AA is being pushed to the bench. Live NCAA competition would have benefitted less experienced wrestlers more than Ono. Ono competing just as part of the NLWC would have provided the training benefits some have mentioned.

Maybe I perceive the gap in between World and NCAA wrestling as larger than most and freestyle vs folkstyle gap as less. I think Ono will mop the floor with NCAA opponents.

If Ono is a one off, it doesn't matter in the long run. If others follow suit, I don't like it.

I couldn't tell you. I know there is a kid for ILL that is an expected high to mid first. I'm sure there are others as well.

Just a weird thing to get upset about and then attempt to mask the real issue...that he's doing it at PSU.

Again, is there outrage about Gable and Snyder? What if the Olympics had fallen differently for Lee or Brooks? I'm sure you would have shunned Lee for coming back to Iowa for a year. 🙄

Like Gable? How about Snyder?

We can agree to disagree. If he wants to do it, good for him.
Difference is those guys were actually in college when they competed at the olympics/ worlds. They didn't go win world medals then enroll.

PSU fans like to claim Iowa is the mercenary program. You can't do that now. You literally just bought the best p4p wrestler in the world to take over for a guy that just got you 3rd at nationals.

Pretty wild stuff.

Japanese Freestyle Wrestler Masanosuke Ono Joins Penn State Wrestling in Unprecedented Deal

State College, PA – March 24, 2025

In a stunning addition to an already dominant wrestling program, Japanese freestyle wrestler Masanosuke Ono has officially joined the Penn State Nittany Lions. Ono, a rising star in international competition, brings a wealth of experience and technical mastery to the program led by legendary head coach Cael Sanderson. However, in an unexpected twist, Ono’s contract with the team includes an unusual stipulation: he must supply Sanderson with unlimited quantities of soy sauce for the duration of his tenure in Happy Valley.

The agreement, reportedly the first of its kind in collegiate wrestling, was finalized after Ono expressed his desire to train under Sanderson, widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers and coaches of all time. While details of the contract remain largely confidential, sources close to the program have confirmed that the deal hinges on Ono’s ability to provide an uninterrupted flow of premium soy sauce to Sanderson’s personal stockpile.

“Penn State wrestling is about commitment, discipline, and making sacrifices for the team,” Sanderson said in a press conference. “Masanosuke understands that, and he’s willing to go the extra mile—both on and off the mat. Plus, I do love a good soy sauce.”

Ono, known for his lightning-quick takedowns and impeccable mat awareness, seemed unfazed by the arrangement. “I am honored to join this program, and if Coach Sanderson wants soy sauce, then soy sauce he shall have,” Ono said through a translator. “I look forward to wrestling at the highest level and ensuring that no meal in State College is ever bland again.”

Though it remains unclear exactly how Ono plans to fulfill the soy sauce clause, rumors suggest a partnership with a top-tier Japanese distributor may be in the works. Some fans have speculated that Sanderson’s newfound affinity for soy sauce could influence the team’s post-match meals, potentially leading to a culinary shift in the Nittany Lions’ training table.

Regardless of the contractual quirks, Ono’s arrival is expected to strengthen an already formidable Penn State squad. Wrestling insiders believe his presence could give the team an even greater edge in their pursuit of another NCAA championship.

As for Sanderson’s soy sauce stash, only time will tell if Ono can truly keep up with demand. But one thing is certain—Penn State wrestling just got even more interesting.

I already posted that I think extending athletes careers beyond 5 years was bad for college wrestling. But you seem intent on putting words in other people's mouth. Have at it, but your wrong and naive in your understanding of wrestling competition levels .

Maybe he's actually an anti-PSU mole. All that sodium in the soy sauce = major water retention and missed weight at nationals? 4D chess here.

It's amazing that I come on a website for fans that claim PSU guys think wrestling started in 2011, and they think that Ono wrestling for PSU is something new and unprecedented in this sport.

Anybody ever hear of Uetake??? He's one of the only guys they mention in the same breath as Cael and Gable. That happened over 60 years ago. Won Olympic and NCAA gold in the same year and then won 2 more NCAAs (undefeated in his NCAA career) before winning his second gold for Japan in 68.

PSU has had multiple decorated international Japanese wrestlers compete and coach for them including NCAA champ Sanshiro Abe.

Russians have AA'd, Cubans as well.

Ono is 21 and will probably be finished school here in 2 to 3 years. C'mon guys, this is not some super sneaky, groundbreaking thing that Cael has pulled off. Although the Flo hype machine might have you believe otherwise.

He was able to do this because of the RTC he has built in the past 15 years. Just sayin'.

Got it- if Ono wanted to go to Iowa you would be “No, we’re good. We like our guys”
I already said everyone else would've taken him if they could.

But you can bet that if Iowa did this all the typical wrestling Twitter authorities and podcast geeks would've been up in arms about what a stinky and toxic move it is for the sport. You guys do it, and it's all about the nobility of CS just giving a young Japanese wrestler his shot. Lol.

thank you for acknowledging the obvious joke that got deleted. apparently PSU fans can com where and make jokes disparaging Iowas program and coaches all the time on our board but we cant do the same on our own board Silly
The psu trolls own our mods.

As for Ono I would love to have him wrestling for us. Since he's at psu I hate it. Wonder if there's a way to get Tasaki sp? some eligibility for 141. The guy is amazing. Watching him and Spencer go is awesome.

If he wrestles for 4 years at Penn State, still will be younger than Teemer and Brands this year. Clearly being old doesn't equal success.

He shouldn't have four years at PSU, you only get one year out of high school before your clock starts. Just like Kennedy Blades only gets three years at Iowa (and she is only 21 like Ono) because she was with Sunkist but not in college. So I think if he turns 22 next year he'd have two years max of eligibility.
