This is a Carl revenge tour move against Iowa and Spencer specifically. Carl is a great coach, he leaves no stone unturned but he is also a SOB. Only a SOB would pay a guy to not transfer to Iowa even though him doing so would not put a scratch in his team's ability to win nationals. He will gladly use a foreign guy in Ono to try and limit the success of Spencer.
When you see HWC coaches training and cornering foreign guys to beat USA guys let me know. A big difference between a foreign guy hanging out a while to train and the coaches repping that guy in his career against USA guys.

Training with the NLWC and competing against the best wrestlers in Russia, Iran, and Eastern Europe might make Ono a better wrestler, but I don't see how competing in college makes Ono a better wrestler. It certainly has not made Gable a better wrestler.
What's the next step for Iowa, OSU ... in the NIL arms race? I am sure there are Eastern European world medalists willing to compete for NIL $. Why worry about developing world class wrestlers in college when you can pay an already world class wrestler to compete against 18 year old kids?

It makes no sense to me to bring in foreign wrestlers to American colleges to train them to beat our American wrestlers at Worlds and the Olympics. I guess that is just me. Ono isn't going to get better for the Olympics by wrestling college folkstyle wrestlers, so this really hurts the American freestyle wrestlers if you ask me. If you donate to the NLWC are you hoping your money is spent to train Ono to beat whoever he faces from the United States in future freestyle events while representing Japan?
