Oregon State pbp/discussion

I'm just frustrated my friend. I've been hardcore on the NB bandwagon and think he can definitley be a top 3 guy. And to that point, I would love to see him show more confidence in his ability to score points.
Yeah I get it. I want the Hawks to excel in every way possible. But it's easy for fans like us who aren't in the thick of it, even if we wrestled at one level or another, to not appreciate just how grueling a D1 wrestling schedule is. Weight management and minor to major injuries play a much bigger role than we see watching a dual on TV. Nelson will be just fine. It's early and he's probably a bit rusty after a long time off. Maybe he earns the spot or someone else does, but I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt. Just think of the exceptional wrestlers who took losses no one saw coming, often early in the season. There is only one who won them all, and even he had a few tight matches.

Well stated my friend! :)

How is anyone surprised by brands performance. This is exactly who he’s been from the start, not gonna change his 7th year all of a sudden. He’ll be fine and will win a lot of matches, although it won’t be pretty. I do hope Kennedy gives him a run for his money though.

Exactly. This is exactly what you’re going to get from Nelson. If he puts a nice little run together and gets a good draw, he gets on the podium in March. If he gets a bad draw or someone gets an early takedown, then he’s 1-2 and done. The best move for the team for this year and the future is to see what you have with Arnold and Ferrari …. The earlier the better. You can always go back to Nelson later. He’s not going anywhere.

I mean the more I think about it the more I think gabe should be 74 since that’s his weight for the future and I believe he’s better than brands and should have choice. I think everyone is too eager about Ferrari. Dude is gonna be a stud but wrestled his biggest competition(Ironman) last year at 165. He’s not gonna be big enough for 84 as a true freshman and the weight clears out next year

Out of shape or not ready to wrestle or whatever the circumstances Kennedy would have given 10 times the effort Brands did last night.

Nelson is at 74 because it’s his optimal weight. Nelson would be plenty competitive at 84, just as much as Gabe. The best line up this year is Nelson 74, Gabe 84.
Gabe's optimal weight is 174 as well and is the future at that weight class. I hope TNT do the right thing and have a true wrestle off between Gabe, Kennedy, and Nelson, all 3 guys deserve that. Iowa doesn't exactly have a great record of 5th or 6th year guys peaking at Nationals and out performing their seeds.

what exactly does a wrestle off prove at this point? I like the way TNT handles it. Let the guys take ownership of deciding their weight. Take advantage of their opportunities or leave the door open to get replaced. If there’s not a clear cut guy by championship season then have a wrestle off when it really matters with it all on the line. The guy that can emerge under that pressure is the guy you want in March.

The sky isn't falling, but we had an opportunity to go in there and take care of business, and we didn't. We let guys stay in matches too long, and aside from 125 & 197 most of those opponents were pretty average.

Nelson and Rathjen are the only ones I'm deeply disappointed in. But I'm concerned about the physical conditioning of several other guys, and of course, due to the fact that Rathjen went, I'm a little concerned about Teemer now!

Happy the season has started. I wish Kennedy or Ferrari were in the lineup instead of Nelson.

Starting a fresh thread. I'm terrible at pbp, so hope someone will cover it tonight.

Dual starts at 9pm. Flo has the stream. 197 looks to be the highlight match.

Just waiting on @Grip220 to let everyone know what's on the menu for the season to officially begin....
Unfortunately no cooking yesterday JRod, I was in a fishing tournament and actually did not get to watch the match till this morning. I need to still watch again and read through this entire thread, but not a bad start IMO.

It's a data point, sure. But I'm not worried at all about guys being rusty/tired in their 1st match on Nov 1. It's a long season, no need to be at peak form just yet.

I was actually encouraged by the fact that Block and Buchanan were able to dig deep and find the winning scores late while fatigued. Doesn't often play out that way.

Now if it's Feb 7th and guys are still gassing, worry away.

How was the fishing Grip?

A win is a win, is a win, is a win…..

I get that you want to be entertained and, when you aren’t, it’s very easy to point out why you weren’t. Some guys simply win ugly. Unfortunately, Brands is just one of those guys.

I caution against unneeded angst and strongly recommend patience. I would at least wait until he actually gets taken down and/or loses before selling him out.

It is REALLY hard to lose if your opponent cannot score a single offensive point against you, even if the style can be very hard to watch at times…

Nelson just didn’t make much of an effort last night, imo. He got more of workout pre match doing backflips. He was all defense on the feet but put on a good ride. It was pretty obvious he was gunning for that 2-1 victory early on.

We consistently out wrestled them in the third period last night.

The crowd was really gracious last night, clapping after most Iowa victories. The place was packed but the crowd was dead silent except when one of their guys scored. They were even cheering loudly in one match when we started playing catch and release. It took a few takedowns for them to figure out what was going on. Lol

The venue played music during the matches. Most of it was drums and bass tracks. But there was no introduction music.

I don’t understand why this means Nelson should be the 174. Gabe is your future. Let him wrestle his best weight.

Nelson has a 0% chance of finishing higher than 3rd (unless KOT/Haines end up on the same side somehow). Gabe has the exact same ceiling at 174.

I agree he should be in the lineup but it should be at 184.

People forget that Nelson was a 13 seed and was seconds away from losing R1 to the 19. He had a great tournament after that, but he’s never performed at a consistent, sure fire AA level in his entire career.

And other wrestlers know it. They aren’t going to engage until they have to towards the end of the third. Same thing that has constantly happened to Iowa wrestlers without the ability to generate their own offense. Going to leave it to late third period scrambles.

So did you ever go down and introduce yourself to Uncle Fester?

excuse me, sir, iowa won 8 of 10 matches
At 141 we came from behind in the last 30 sec to beat #70 by 1 pt.

At 149 we scored a 3-point victory over #201.

At 157 we got majored by #141.

At 174 we beat #65 on a riding time point.

At 285 #78 had our leg in the air to tie with :30 left.

I'm not name-dropping, but I think Gable would agree with me that we didn't take care of business the way we should've.

Ryder is coming off a long layoff and pulling major weight.

no disagreement from me; it's something to monitor.

you're actually concerned about Parco? who AA's every year?
At 157 we got majored by #141.
He's 141 b/c he's a FR. Also, i'm not sure if you got the memo, but you have Jacori Teemer.
At 174 we beat #65 on a riding time point.
Nelson coming back after a 1 year lay off beats a guy that has a win over Dustin Plott, by RT point. in Nov.

I was really impressed with Ayala, Caliendo, Arnold, and the way Buchanan ended his match with authority. Parco showed some good flashes in there aswell.

Certainly some rust out there. Hopefully Peterson can make 125 and be successful.
Teemer will be a big upgrade at 157.

Kueter did look a little thicker, which is good to see. A little out of shape, but thats something that can be corrected. Keep eating and keep attacking..

Good early season road win to get them started. On to the next
