Sloppy match, but whatever. Very high ceiling if he continues to develop.
Thanks to Chad and whomever else for the effort! The quality improved as the match went on!! Go Hawks!
I know Brands loves his guys, but not a lot to love there, outside of Ayala and Arnold (edit, and Caliendo). Only NF points of the dual were for Oregon State. Sloppy, tired, slow. Rathjen and Brands tied for worst performance.
Yeah, Kueter will be fine. As Smalls said, it’s November.
Tell her he needs to score 25 points per match.
Either PK and Gabe or Gabe and Ferrari.
And Brands looked sucked down and slow. Must be struggling with weight.
Rathje was just way too loosy goosy and flat footed. He needs to get to work, he is better than that.
Did the announcer say Olguin is out for the year? Cali looks mid season ready. Him and Arnold are so slick. Buchanan gets my vote for wrestler of the meet finishing off Munoz in the 3rd in the feature match. I was a little worried for him when he was behind and looked gassed but there was plenty left in the tank. Good meet. Loved Oregon States aggressive no backing down to Iowa. Good show and good boisterous crowd.
Nelson's first folkstyle match in 18 months, first weigh-in of the year with a weight cut, and travel to the west coast that had them all wrestling at 9pm on their bodies' time. Let's all calm down about Nelson at this point.
Buchanan looked good...Munoz is a tough customer. At first, he looked gassed but finished very strong.
That tiger isn’t going to change his stripes. Maybe Kennedy has an outside shot at 174 unless Nelson shakes off the rust fast.
I'm with you WRT Buchanan. He looked like he was finished halfway through the 2nd period and then out of nowhere he found that anger, attitude, and energy to right the ship. I was very very impressed with the way he finished the match. I was also very impressed with the way Gabe attacked his oponent. He didn't have any TFs last year after the Luther Open, so it was good to see him let it fly against a quality D1 school. His opponent, TJ McDonnell, wasn't nearly the same level, not even close, but Gabe could have easily settled for the decision or even the MD. But his goal wasn't to win, but to dominate. And we need more of that out of our guys. We need that Caliendo "seek and destroy" mentality when every one of our guys hit the mat.
Brother I enjoy ya most of the time, but man do you ever get tired of bitching and being overly critical way too early?
Yes. I’d point to noticeable development in Drake, Block(give him a little more time), Caliendo has developed spectacularly in our room, and Gabe for sure. I think Ben overlooked that guy a bit and expected to end it early.
So are just pointing at the lack of “development” of 7th year guy Nelson Brands?
If you think Tom is handing Nelson the slot because of his last name you’re insane. I mean, you’re aware of the type of people TnT are right??
With Ben gassing bad the last minute, shows how much more exhausting folkstyle is than freestyle.
Maybe Nelson is 174 because they think he won’t be competitive at all at 184. Angelo would do fine, but no need to waste a year of eligibility with 184 so loaded at the top. Things open up for him next year, and he’s a year older, bigger, stronger.
Nelson is at 74 because it’s his optimal weight. Nelson would be plenty competitive at 84, just as much as Gabe. The best line up this year is Nelson 74, Gabe 84.
I think he did say Olguin is out for the year. Willie also tweeted Attao is out for the year.
I'm with you regarding Rathjen and Brands. Perhaps they were both sick (weak attempt at humor). I'm especially disappointed with Nelson because Nelson is ranked in the top 10 yet failed to score an offensive point against a guy who is a very average, unranked senior, who's never qualified for NCAAs. In fact, I just watched the match again; Nelson had one legitimate all-in TD attempt in the 2nd period, and one half-hearted attempt in the first period. That was the extent of the offense he brought against an unranked opponent. I've been 100 percent on the NB bandwagon the entire off-season, but that ended tonight. That style does nothing but bore to death and drive away our amazing fanbase, potentially turn off top tier recruits who might have been on the fence, and end in heartbreak at NCAAs. I wanted so bad for NB to come out tonight and make a statement.

My friend, I'm a huge TnT and NB fan, and wanted so much for Nelson to make a huge statment tonight to show how serious he is about making a run at NCAAs That said, if I'm TnT, and if Nelson brings the same lack of offense next week against Stanford's 74 pounder, I've got to be thinking about putting PK out there regardless of who's better in the room.
Give it some time, Nash. That's a long lag for him from competition schedule, and Nelson has never been an offensive juggernaut. With absolute certainty I can tell you TnT are not favoring him if he doesn't earn it. One dual down, let's see what happens over the rest of the early season competition.
Trust me, I know Gobblin. It's about as ridiculous as it is for Nelson to go out there against an unranked opponent and have two TD attempts and score zero offensive points in 7 minutes. This year we actually have a chance of beating PSU, however slight it might be, and NB's or whomever mans 74 is a vital piece in making that happen. And what is it that Tom say all the time, "we've got to be more ready." If we want to make a statement this year and if we want to beat PSU, we've got to be more ready and that means every time, regardless of whether it's a west coast trip. And it's not about losing faith in him; it's about him appearing to lose faith in his abilities. He's the total package; he's just got to let it fly. And of course a single match won't cost us recruits, but that style (handfight and hope for the best in the 3rd period) certainly won't tip the scale to our advantage. Again, per Tom, we've got to be more ready.

I'm just frustrated my friend. I've been hardcore on the NB bandwagon and think he can definitley be a top 3 guy. And to that point, I would love to see him show more confidence in his ability to score points.
Also, I don't think for a second that TnT favor any of our guys, relatives or not. I think both TnT are absolute professionals on that front, and as Tom frequently says, "the only thing you deserve is what you earn." NB earned the starting spot or he wouldn't be there.
And Gobblin, no matter how normal I believe myself to be, there are going to be times when I sound ridiculous even if it's not my intent. And to that point, I always appreciate the feedback from those of you who are far more connected, far more knowlegeable, and probably far more intelligent than me. I'm only human.

I've been critical of the staff, but some of you are being too cute by half to criticize this. First match, west coast travel, new faces getting into the lineup, and we still dominated. Obviously some things to monitor going forward, particularly Block and Kueter, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Thought Drake, Caliendo, Gabe, and Buchanan looked awesome.
