Correct, failing on the 2nd td gets you to tie and you need to get it, missing it on the 1st td the ballgame is over because it is a 2 score game still!
Well James Franklin started chasing the points late in the the first half. They missed that 2 pt conversion and just now Franklin , down 9 after a late td, goes for 2 again and missed it to stay down by 9 , 2 scores, with under two minutes.
If psu kicks 2 PATs they are down only 24-17 right now. Chasing points.

If they're down 8 they still need the conversion or they lose. It makes no difference when they go for it. The dumb decision was going for it in the 2nd quarter down 9-14.
And Kirk did the same thing in 2016 or so in that dreadful loss at home to purdue
It was dumb to go for it earlier. The whole point is, THEY DIDN'T NEED TO GO FOR 2 THERE AT THAT TIME! They would have to go for it, if they scored another TD. Them doing at down 9 and not getting it was ballgame!

And they would still need the 2 point conversion. Going for it on the first score didn't affect their chances of winning, It only affected how soon they found out they were screwed.

Before snapping the ball on the conversion Penn State needed: a 2 point conversion, an onside kick recovery, another touchdown, and the PAT. It doesn't matter what order they come in, the chances of getting all 4 is the same.
It makes no difference if you fail the conversion after the 1st touchdown versus after the 2nd touchdown. You can't say the decision to go for it was bad without the knowledge that it failed.
It was a bad decision to go for it at that time because IF you don't get it, ballgame is over! There was ZERO reason to go for it when they didn't need to! If you can't understand that, I dont know what to tell you!
