Owen Freeman on the outs?

I know this will be a polarizing post, but the only coach I would hire with Iowa ties is Bruce Pearl. He's been a big winner everywhere he's coached, including Auburn (#1). I know he would be hard to pry away from his current job, and I don't know if he still feels an affinity for Iowa, but I would take a major run at him.

LOL that ship sailed forever ago! Iowa was so dumb to not go after him when at UWM, was obvious that he had the tenacity and let’s face it borderline morality to succeed in college basketball. This Iowa Nice crap is never going to fly, exactly why we have 2 stagnant programs right now.

There are plenty of good coaches to choose from but Iowa will never again have the luxury of getting one that is already proven at this level.

The 80s are long gone.

Rumors swirling on the Twitterverse that he won’t be back at Iowa next year and/or is shutting it down this year.

Also his dad tweeted and deleted something when Owen got benched during the OSU game. I saw it initially but it’s gone now - something along the lines of “wooow”.

Need any more reason for this to be Fran’s last year?
Said this weeks ago when people thought it was bad. Be much worse when Freeman leaves. Quite frankly Why would he stay at this point?

Might have been at Carver today to watch his girl play....so that's what it's like when we win huh??

I would take Bruce Pearl in a heartbeat.

No idea how much money it would take for him to even consider it, if he would even consider it at all.

I do wonder what Koch will do as I think he’s got the most upside on the roster and wants to be a hawk. Fran won’t be going anywhere other than a mid-major if he wants to keep coaching so I don’t see him following his coach.
Not a knock on the kid but he’s not a great athlete, like most on the roster. Not sure he’s got a ton of upside. On the right roster he could be a contributor but not sure what his position is moving forward? A slow small forward? Undersized Power forward?

So he’s leaving a place where he can recruit any kid he wants in the best conference in the country and he’s got the best team in the country to come to Iowa because he was an assistant 30 years ago?

What in my post indicates I believe he would leave for Iowa?

He's not a "great" athlete but I don't think he's out of place athletically in the big ten either. He's not like the Sandforts.

I'd put him in the average athlete category about the same as Freeman and Dix.

I'm pretty sure he had offers from Purdue and Illinois.

He's 6'8 so not really undersized either, assuming the next coach has a normal college basketball lifting program instead of the Fran marathon runner build.

My point was it would take an obscene amount of money for Pearl to even consider it.

But, yeah, it would be cool.
We don't have as much money as it would take for him to consider it.

It's a ridiculous idea for all the reasons explained above by other posters.

First, you create a product that people want to buy. Then, people buy it.

It doesn't work the other way round, mate.
Well I can guarantee nobody going to the games is not good for the program. So I guess it's on you if you want to contribute to that.

There are fans and there are consumers. Fans always support the program and understand it is their role to do so. It's the difference between "what can I do for the team?", and "what can the team do for me?"

Iowa has lost two games at Carver this season.

It's not like the lack of attendance came after an inability to win any home games.

It was already there
I agree.

Attendance has been pretty bad the last few years even though we were coming off the heels of some really solid seasons.

Using womens team as an argument for not going to men’s games is pretty illogical. Women’s attendance is so good not because the team is great (they aren’t this year) but because we just had the best player to ever play the game come through the program.

If that’s what it takes to get people to support the men’s team, then we’re completely f*cked

There have been a few contributing factors since, but really, attendance hasn't been the same since Alford's mishandling of the Pierre Pierce incident

I didn't say they don't make money I said it's a waste of money.

Lol

There's not a single student that remembers Alford even being coach. Most weren't even born. An entire generation of fans have no idea what you are talking about about, and you're suggesting that the older ones have held a grudge against the university for 20+ years...

Your explanation has nothing to do with reality.

People have found better things to do than watch mediocre at best basketball. Simple as.

Who can blame them?

I can guarantee that going 26 years without ever once making the second weekend of the tournament is not good for the program.

I can guarantee that going 46 years without ever winning a regular season title is not good for the program.

I can guarantee that consistently playing a joke non con schedule, and going entire seasons without ever even getting a single top 25 vote is not good for the program.

I can guarantee that consistently fielding the worst defense in the conference is not good for the program.

I can guarantee that getting embarrassed in multiple games is not good for the program.

I can guarantee that losing to Minnesota (the worst team in the league) at home is not good for the program.

I can guarantee that a 2 year drought of missing the NCAA Tournament altogether is not good for the program.

Which of the above is the fault of the fans? Which of the above could fans change?

It's not anybody's "role" to mindlessly waste time and money on something that they don't enjoy. lol who assigns these "roles"? Superfans like you? smh

You should talk to Beth. Suggest she begin a fan shaming campaign to fill the stands. A campaign that explains to them how their selfish consumer like behavior is hurting the program. I think it might turn things around

LMAO

You're goofy.

It's not an explanation, it's a fact.

As I stated, there have been a few other factors as well.

All I said is attendance hasn't been the same since the PP incident, and that is a fact

None of this has anything to do with the fact that:
1. poor attendance is not good for the program. And
2. Fans/consumers have a choice whether they want to contribute to that or not.

It's very simple

Oh yes. It's all "very simple" ....except that "not contributing to that (poor attendance)" costs people hard earned money and time.

It's hilarious to me how goof balls like you always seem to have such an expansive sense of largess with the time and money of OTHER PEOPLE.

Just buy tickets, and travel, and spend a few hours watching a game that you won't enjoy. Do this for every home game. It's so simple. How can you not? Do it for the program. What are you? Some kind of filthy self-interested consumer?! lmao

I'll say it again -- you're goofy.

"it's on you" lol

Yes. I'll own it. It's on me to make choices how I spend the money that I earn and the precious time that God has granted me.

If that doesn't include buying tickets and investing the time driving, parking, watching, and driving, to behold Fran Ball, I'm sure as F*CK not ever going to feel even a single twinge of guilt for "contributing to" poor attendance, and thereby hurting the program.

How do you get everything in life so bass ackwards, brah? It's scary.
