Passing game let’s fix it and go to the next level

I think throwing a tad more on first down will help. Part of the struggles are them throwing after getting stuffed on first down. I also would like to see some more drawl type plays on 3rd down to slow that rush down a tad. On #2s last TD we came out empty then motioned him by the QB and ran it. That was like 3rd and 11 if I remember right.

I predict a somewhat different looking offense against tOSU. We will see more Sullivan in more plays and doing things he hasn't done at Iowa.

Also, good reason to believe KF is very frustrated. Based on the tOSU game Sully may be the starter thereafter. Too bad for CMcN. Hate to see a good player's career so damaged by injury.

Might as well ad this: Sully and Gill have said they feel lucky to have escaped NW.

I don't think his comment about passing game is insignificant.
God I hope so.

Teams - starting with OSU - are gonna do everything they can to shut down KJ & the run game, and force McNamara to beat them.

Which we all know that, if he keeps playing the same way he has so far this season, he will not be up the task.

I think its pretty obvious. He's not making the throws he needs to keep a defense honest. He can't use his legs. I predicted after the first game he wouldn't finish the season and I still believe that. He could be a good QB on some team but it's not Iowa. He is reverse Jake Ruddock.

They need to reevaluate what they look for in a QB prospect going forward.

What on God’s green earth makes you think KF will make a QB change?

Part, actual information and part a realistic rather than abysmal view of the Iowa coach. Until Petras came along we rarely had a bad QB on the field without a change. Hell, Jake R and CJ were both good QBs and KF went with a sophomore with a bigger upside. Ricky "Wild Thing" Stanzi over the incumbent. Probably the least surprising move, they were named "co starters" going into the season. I think it was only to see if Ricky wasn't too wild, which at times he was. So a change and the right change about 3 games into the season.

Don't need to go over the KF on Brad Banks. Brad said many time he wasn't ready to start. Good to recall Brad had a no offers out of HS and no offers as a QB out of JUCO. Kirk Ferentz was the only coach in the United States to recognize Brad's potential. BB had a set packages for him to run as a junior and the results were promising, but mixed. Some big plays, some really dumb mistakes-like not knowing the line to gain. Iowa was in a desperate race for it's first winning season after the previous two years. The four-year starter completed 64% passes and didn't make big mistakes was exactly who should be playing in that situation rather with a guy that had no QB offers out of HS or JUCO.

Other than the last three seasons-where something weird happened and I think it was named Brian, when in the previous 21 seasons should the QB have been changed. Not BB, not Nate C, not Drew Tate, Jake C got replaced, Stanzi locked down for 3 seasons, not Vandenberg's junior year (although his arm was so injured senior year Iowa could have played Jake R as a true freshman but it's hard to argue against a vet that had a huge junior year (like 3000 yards and 25 TDs), Jake R, although very good and playing well got jumped by an underclassman and was replaced, then Nate Stanley. Hell, they tried jump Padilla-who continued to start after Petras cleared to play-but Padilla was unplayable bad. Take away just two throws for TDs Padilla's QB rating would been in the teens. So, I'm thinking about the previous 20 years before a problem named Brian became OC and the offense began to get worse every season.

There are 2 types of plays that are effective against a pass rush. Screen pass and deep ball. Iowa cannot seem to execute either.

This offense doesn’t need to have an all world passing attack. It just needs to pick up some 3rd downs here and there, not result in negative plays all the time and keep the defense honest about having to defend more than 8 yards.
You have the key point above for this year which is gaining an advantage with 1st down passes to back up the defense and having some consistent passing plays to pick up 3rd downs.

What I have seen so far is Gill, RVZ, K Brown and a few others have run some good slants and some short down and then slant patterns to pick up good yardage, even 10+ yards. We also have been getting good, easy passes to the TEnds using the play action rollout.

The other pass route I can see being used is the comeback pattern where the receiver drives the defender back, stops and comes back to the ball with himself positioned between his QB and the defender. This gives the QB basically a stationary type target that is not running across the field but moving instead back toward the qb. This route and just a simple sit down route against zones. Practice the best routes until you have great confidence in them.

Michigan beat OSU last year with 150 yards passing.
