Wouldn’t the same be true for Gabe? Also, since Ferrari can redshirt, wouldn’t that experience be much more important for Gabe this year?

Actually I would buy into the thought of why give Starocci any idea of what Gabe can or can’t do? Let the first time be at the Big Ten’s or at Nationals.
If the goal is to win an individual chip, I cannot think of a compelling reason for Gabe to sit out tonight. He is probably going to see Star at B1G's and Nationals, so I think it favors the underdog to get as familiar with the favorite as much as possible. Wrestle now and at B1Gs's to gain insight on how to win the one that counts in March.

Did I miss Tom announcing Gabe as the starter? It absolutely matters where he stacks up if you’re considering wrestling him as a true freshman when you already have a solid guy. No idea who goes tonight

If Gabe is not the starter moving forward, this is a total mismanagement of the roster on TNT. Gabe should have wrestled last year and shirted this year if that was the case. Seems odd for Gabe to burn a year sitting behind Angelo unless he can get down to 174. Getting pretty late in the season to start a descent to 174 and be effective.
If I were betting, Gabe is the 184 and Angelo is redshirting this year.
Just wrestle the starters, no jockeying around, no 84 mixup just to avoid a guy till later. Gabe’s talked enough, it’s time for him to go. I’d rather see Gabe go, get beat and learn for the post season.

Exactly Gobblin. Maybe Brands was beating PK and got injured. When he gets healthy is Brands the starter even though it has been PK for the last 6 weeks or so? Maybe Gabe and Angelo were close in November and now Angelo has separated himself from Gabe. Who should be the starter? Maybe Gabe has been weighing in light and is going down to 174 this year? It is foolish for us arm chair coaches to pretend we know what is best for the team when we aren't in the room everyday like the coaches and wrestlers. However it plays out, just cheer for your Hawks and enjoy the show.
I'm looking forward to watching Keckeisen beat star in March at the National Tournament.
Sickness, injuries, building guys up, insurance at a couple weights, and balancing current and future lineups are just a few reasons.

If Carter beats Keckeisen this year to win his fifth title he definitely will have earned it. Keckeisen is a great wrestler. He looked phenomenal in his last match against Plott.

Enjoy #2 while we have it. lol. Okie State will be jumping us based on the kids they are brining in and the life the new coaches have brought to the program. Ours is getting to be like watch Ferentz football. Boring and predictable. 7-9 wins vs 2-5 NCAA placing. If we don’t get some of this years and next years big recruits and we continue to wait on Spencer after 2028 or ti make other coaching changes like HWC, we are going to be climbing out of one hell of a deep hole behind PSU and OSU. The Brands have not changed with the times, have not kept up with how kids (social media wise) are changing and their time has passed.

Add to this the fact that our assistant coaches are not top level and we’ve missed opportunities to upgrade that due to stubbornness. Would love to have brought Kem in but he’s untested so it’s time to go after someone outside of the Iowa way culture. Instead of throwing money at wrestlers for hire for a year let’s go lock down some top tier coaches!!
it seems like recruiting and money are always the reasons given for losing to Penn State. Off the top of my head, I think Iowa had the higher rated recruit in at least 4 of the matches last night - 133, 157, 174 and 184. Heavyweight was basically a toss up with Kirkvliet being #1pfp and Keuter being #2pfp. It seems like Iowa is doing really well at recruiting. Is our problem actually with wrestler development?
Your post lost all credibility when you included 184. How come that well thought of true freshman didn’t beat the 4x NCAA champ in his house? Must be development!
Our recruiting was trash for much of the past 10-15 years considering the Iowa legacy but yes they are completely spanking us technically, in strategy and almost to a man are bigger, faster, stronger and never get tired.
Remember to keep it positive. If anyone attacks brands you get the entire “inner circle “ telling you you’re a troll. Brands is the best coach ever and his wrestlers always improve… I can’t think of any examples off the top of my head but everyone tells me they are the best…

I understand and your point is valid. I didn’t mean that we should have won all those weights. I just simply meant that for many weights we have a higher ranked high school recruit. Obviously at specific weights at this snapshot in time one wrestler may have much more experience than the other, but, overall, we are not getting killed on the recruiting front. As for your point about Ferrari, I guess time will tell whether Ferrari gets Starrocci results.
Also, my comment about wrestler development was a question, not an assertion. I don’t know why PSU is so much better, but somehow they are.

I don't know how we all look at the same boards, watch the same matches, read the same articles, etc. and everyone not know how the Ferrari / Arnold debacle was going to play out. Gabe was always going to be the starter and last night's match was a wasted opportunity that he would have been able to get to wrestle Starocci in order to game plan for March, the ultimate goal.
We learned absolutely nothing about Angelo that we didn't already know before the match. He is very, very, very good - that should not be a surprise for anyone either. He is going to be even better next year whether he wrestled last night or not. After the dual last night, Tom said that Gabe was the starter for the remainder of the year and that Angelo would shirt - again, not news for most of us paying attention.
The only legitimate reason that I could come up with that makes any sense to this entire drama, is that Angelo was wiping the mat with Arnold in the room and Tom was sparing Gabe the embarrassment of getting throttled on a national stage after running his mouth two years in a row. This is also probably the reason that they didn't wrestle at the finals of the Soldier Salute.
Yeah, see that is NOT a strong suit for the Iowa program currently.
Quite the opposite is true, there have been numerous times where Iowa wins vs a PSU opponent once, maybe twice, then can never beat them again.
If we think Gabe can beat Star in March it's to our advantage to give Carl/Star as little time as possible to adjust.
For example Starr and and Kemerer. Cass and Kirk. ADS and RBY. Imagine Kasak vs Rathjen now. That’d be a tech fall for Kasak this year. The PSU development/ analytic strategizing is otherworldly at PSU currently.
Lee v Eierman, Bartlett v Real...and so on.
