PJ Duke commits to PSU

Edit: First % is for AA wrestlers who finished 1st or 2nd. Second % is for AA wrestlers who won their last match (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th). One of the more interesting stats to me is that Iowa is only 3 behind Penn State in total # of AAs since 2010.

Dang, my friend...you did some serious analysis. Two numbers jump out at me in our battle to be as good as you boys at PSU. One is our winning percentage. Yes, we AA almost as much but we're about 20 percentage points shy on our winning percentage...which basically prevents us from wrestling most of the matches Saturday night. And the other thing, and it drives me crazy, is that most of the PSU hammers are going for falls and TFs, where the majority of the Iowa hammers (Kem, Lee, ADS, etc., excluded) simply go for the decision much of the time instead of going for the kill. And of course those points add up big time when all is said and done. I would love to see a couple offensive juggernauts (guys like David Taylor) brought onto the coaching staff at Iowa to mix things up. We have been stagnant for far too long and as much as I like the Bull and other Iowa grads not named Lee, Kem, etc.,) that style is not what we need to be teaching. We need 7 mins of offense when possible, not 6:30 worth of hand-fighting followed by a TD attempt at the end of the match. That shit bites us in the ass far too often...and it's not all the exciting for the huge fan base that follows Iowa wrestling. We need to up our game and I think diversity on the staff will help greatly. Thanks for the comments and the world class analysis!! :)

Thank you, my friend! I knew one of you smart guys would have the answer and I was thinking that Iowa wouldn't look all too well in the results. We have just sucked at preparing our guys for NCAAs! And I don't think we're as smart as we need to be during NCAAs. Case in point I thought it was dumb as hell to have Spencer Lee take bottom to start the 2nd period during the QF (I think it was) when he was already up 8-0 or something like that and riding the kid from Lock Haven like a pony. Instead of putting SL on top and having him work a couple tilts for the win one of the master minds had him take bottom where he struggled to get out and eventually won by MD. Just made no fricking sense to me. We (our coaches) have to be smarter come tourney time. And I'm not saying anyone else is smarter than TnT; I'm saying we can do better at prepping and decision making...in my very humble opinion. And no, I don't think I could do better...I know I would suck. But I'm not getting paid the big bucks. :)
I agree. It’s not just at NCAA’s, but those are the easiest results to compare with other programs, imo. We don’t prep well for specific opponents. And we seem to have trouble if/when opponents don’t follow the script we drill for in practice.

ADS was one of my favorite Hawks, but it was painful watching him get eaten alive by RBY every time they met up. Imposing our will against top tier guys only works well when opponents follow the script we prepare for.

Record this. The first time @Psalm 1 guy got credited for being smart. (Yes, sarcasm.)

Wait, are you talking about the great Faleure? I mean, I guess if you concentrate on his 4 State Championships, 4 National Championships, 3 Hodge Trophies, 4 National OW's, his being the only undefeated wrestler in NCAA history, his FS Olympic Gold medal, his 235-26-2 coaching record, his 98 All Americans and 36 Individual NCAA champions that he coached in 17 years, and his 10 coaching national team titles in the last 13 years they were held, you might consider him slightly successful. However, the great minds can see through all of that B.S. It has been nothing but, luck, cheating and money from the FAT man that accomplished this, so, he is the Great Faleure.

I mean even if you overlook the obvious luck, cheating and $$$, his accomplishments don't event take much talent. Truly talented people can take people's name's and come up with hilarious nicknames to put them down. It's been my contention that particular skill truly shows how great a human being is. I mean seriously, when you can recruit top end guys, like Frank MORONaro, David FAILore, Ed TRUTHISHECHEATS, Matt CLOWN, Nico MegaLOONEY, Pain CHEATerford, Mark HallOFSHAME, Bo PENNY and others, of course you are going to win.
Sorry I didn’t factor all that in the equation.

I mean aside from the fact that Pennsylvania is pretty much considered best wrestling state in the country, and probably the toughest wrestling area in the country if we add in the surrounding states. Then when we take with some would consider the United States best wrestler ever and give him and quit funding in that area, it’s easy to see how he can’t be successful.

I’m focusing on certain things that I learned about that I’ve heard Penn State wrestlers talk about they go beyond that. They talk about training, nutrition, recovery, and sports psychology. I don’t see other wrestlers talking about that too much with the other schools.

So why it seems that Sanderson has some advantages due to geography and his notoriety and school support, I think people are failing to credit him for the little things that took him to the next level or so.

Tell me where I am wrong?

They do so at their own peril!!!

Uhh a little low, but even way back then you could clearly see what $$$$ can do!

Made several VERY clear points! Take ANY of the top 20-30 coaches and give them the sam e% of top recruits and tell me how they would have done?

OK, lets try it like this. the great Fale-ure at F*** st has at least 5X the top recruits as any other team. So lets just do this. Say IOWA had 3 Lee's, 3 KemDawgs, and 3 Bulls in their line up. I use them because they were all high recruits with different levels of success which seems like a fair deal

so the HAWKS roll at Spencer Lee at 125, a KemDawg type at 133, a Bull type at 141, another Lee, Bull, Kem, etc....
Here you have 9 weights filled with that kind of talent and one weight open. That is just THREE TIMES the recruiting that we have had not the FIVE!!!

With that line up, tell me if we would have ever lost? A LEE type is almost always bonus victories, Kem, and Bull you would need absolute studs to beat! So the obvious answer is no way you lose a dual.

Now move on to NCAAs, LEE is a buzzsaw and the only thing that can beat him is injuries, Bull did not have great success at NCAAs although I believe he would have won the shut down year. KemDawg pretty good success. Without doing much math, this seems to also win titles going away.
You can argue the injuries with Sean Lee however he did have some vulnerabilities. I saw some opponents to get to him and his superior strength in ability then did give him the win, however, you put in some bad positions more than most top level elite wrestlers that I have seen.

Not certain, but I thought Noto had choice and chose top.

Edit — Oops, I was wrong. Noto had choice but deferred. Lee looked to corner and took bottom.

Good idea. Why didn't your coach recruit this way?
Do you believe that Brands, Smith, Ryan, etc... don't want a handful or more of TOP recruits every year? Do you honestly, even for one second, think that there was a reason no other coach EVER including the best EVER, Dan Gable were able to do it?

Was very simple, 9.9 was meant in part to keep a level or somewhat balanced field. Have you ever even watched the WARS that took place back in the 70's and 80's. There was also a much greater diversity of winning wrestlers from many different schools.

Obviously sh*t like title IX has helped kill the "glory days" of NCAA wrestling, but now the great Fraleure has really SCREWED things up, and THIS is my main problem with the cockroach!!!

IF he had won the titles in a honest way, battling it out with a team he built and wrestlers he coached up etc.... I would have nothing but respect. The fact that he took fat $$$$ mans cash and bought titles is complete BS!!!! No other way to look at it and even the F*** st A-holes know it!!!

Have you seen this years haul? I mean it is boarder line ridiculous now! They must have 20 or more "full ride type kids" on the roster. Once more they were the first to implement this "grey" shirt, deferred enrollment, etc.... Nothing ground breaking as far as WOW, what a great idea by the great fralure!!!! It just takes $$$$ because someone is paying for these kids to be at school 6-7 or more years!!!

Uhhh, you really do not understand what you were witnessing!!! It is SPENCER Lee by the way. Beating the dead horse again, but here we go. I do not know of, have never seen, never heard of, can't even think of anyone after WW2 that was a wrestler and could have done what he did PERIOD!!!

Had MAJOR knee surgery after HS, WON NCAAs as a true freshmen the following season!!!

Here I will give you the chance! NAME ANY WRESTLER, you believe could have done this????

Then he wins NCAAs with TWO blown out knees!!!!

Honestly, it does not seem possible, but he did it and no one
else could have!!!

Yianni won his first title as a true freshman, with a torn ACL (an ACL he tore during the national tournament), and he beat the 2 time defending national champion at the weight along the way

Normally I would agree with you but ACLs are for wusses, you don’t need them to win a championship. Now having both legs is necessary- unless you’re Anthony Robles. Sorry to break it to you but Spencer Lee is only a 3 time national champion. Pretty soon they will be a dime a dozen at Penn State.

The point is most likely none of them (maybe Bo) could have done this with one torn acl nevermind two.
I will give the Yanni point, but he is just a freak of nature with his flexability and style so I believe that weighs in.

Not sure if yanni ever took a gray shirt(?) but Yes he did win in a different scenario. NOT to take anything away from Yanni's remarkable accomplishment, but he did not have the injury prior and was able to train/condition normally till that point.

Lee had to rehab after SR. year in HS and was not able to train normally for several months. He also beat several very good wrestlers alone the way! So your point is well taken, but is NOT the same!

Others have won with injuries including torn ACLs. NONE that I know of have come out of HS with the injury, had surgery, then won NCAAs the following year!!!

Also having TWO torn and winning, pretty sure you will never see that again! Hoping everything comes together for SL and he can have a least one injury free run so everyone can really see what his 100% level is. Remember what he did at the last FS open he wrestled. I believe that was where we saw him at his healthiest level.

He destroyed everyone including now world Champion Vito A.

If Lex Luthor would quite escaping jail and committing crimes, Spencer would have more time to spend on healing and getting back to wrestling!

Lee had a fantastic career but injuries are a part of any sport and have prevented many from having an even better career. The first two that come to mind for me are Gale Sayers and Sandy Koufax. I wish they didn't have to retire so early.

A full time recruiting director/coordinator would be a very smart addition to the program.
I am not sure I agree. Exactly what would he do? Identify talent? - no the coaches do that. Talk to kids? sure, but the coaches and the kids are what sell the program. Not some "other guy" who tries to sell you the school or team.

Think more like a "FBI profiler". When it comes to actually interacting with the kids, I am pretty sure that position isn't really allowed much to any direct contact with a recruit.

So, you have a person dedicated to essentially providing the coaching staff with as detailed of a dossier as possible. Not only on his wrestling, but his likes/dislikes, beliefs, family structure, etc. This could actually help the coaches know how to approach the kids and hopefully create a bond and inevitable friendship...

Yes altime great athletes who did it when HEALTHY!!! Lee has done it while injured. I understand the "injuries are part of the sport(s). NOT saying they aren't. Telling most here it seems, that they do not fully comprehend what they were lucky enough to witness!!!

It is well known now that he could not train fully most of his college career. It is pretty much inconceivable to even believe anyone could win a NCAA title without being able to train properly! He did it over and over again, and the pr*cks who shut down the tournament the one year was the only thing that stopped him from winning 4!

To be fair, those pr*cks weren't the only one's who stopped him. Matt Ramos played a role in it as well. You need glasses if you can't see that. Just don't ask for Spencer's mom's. There is a rumor that her glasses are damaged.

Every time you post here you show what a douche canoe you are.
It surely will be fun to watch the next time these guys see Spencer on the mat. Even that tool knows a healthy Lee wipes the mat with everyone. There is one guy that has a slight chance at stopping spencer from the US spot at 57kg and that guy just won the worlds at 61kg.
Can Vito be as good at 57 is the question, I believe its to much of a pull and he is much better with the additional 8lbs on him.
We will see

Yeah, that's where I'm thinking a prudent "corner" would give Lee the "keep riding him like a pony" signal, but no, Lee struggled, settled for the MD and then derailed after that. We've got to be smarter. It's not about having that cavalier, "we're Iowa; we're not afraid to take the bottom" attitude; it's about being smart when it matters. And there are times when I (old but truly a novice compared to most on here) look at the decisions that two of the best coaches in the business make and think to myself, WTF are we doing? And I think if we get the little things tightened up that will lead to better things all around. And fresh blood and new perspectives on staff would go far in my opinion.

That's a great point WRT Bo! I disliked him winning only because he wrestled for the other guys, but I enjoyed watching him. He let it fly as much as anyone. Had that man worn a black singlet we would have been partying big time watching him in Iowa City and at NCAAs. One of the things I really enjoyed was the insane funky shit he would try, especially in his first year where he would occasionally get caught doing some of that shit, but he stilled tried it and came out on top 95 percent of the time. Not knowing anything about him other than his wrestling, he's another one of those guys I would welcome onto our staff to work on upper middle-upper weight offense and teach some of our men to become champs. We need offense! And if they try and fail so be it, but when they don't try any offense until the final 30-45 seconds and still end up losing I want to f'ing puke. Brandon Sorensen excelled at his defense and made his style work against everyone but Zain, but our guys (149-197 except Kem) these last couple years have failed miserably at that game when it mattered. And I think they all had the goods and most could have gone farther if they would have just made some no shit 100 percent commit to the shot attempts in periods one and two when they would have had time to come from behind if their attempts failed. But the whole no attempt at all game is boring as hell and just hasn't gone well for our guys.

Here's the link to the story regarding that FS open tournament. Quick summary (direct quotes from Cody Godwin's article):

Here's an excerpt and link to an article written by Cody Godwin regarding Spencer's performance at that tourney: "The 57-kilo bracket included six total NCAA champs, dozens of past All-Americans, a Junior world silver medalist, a U23 world-teamer, in addition to several other credentialed wrestlers. Lee, a two-time NCAA champion and a three-time age-level world champ himself, outscored his five opponents a combined 52-6."

Those five matches were fun to watch. :)

Lee was awesome, just like so many fantastic athletes that never showed their huge potential due to injuries. guys like Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Steve Carlton, and Nolan Ryan are rare. Hell Sanderson and Gable are quite rare.

No one is discounting how great Lee is, we are just saying he's not the best ever. Still great though.

A troll returns, so sue me. I like the debate/comedy here as much as in the Lion’s den, plus the different insights, intel, and perspective. Some throwaway thoughts:
-Still the outlier, I want Iowa strong, and the Lion-Hawkeye dual winner to never exceed 5 match wins and 17 points. Don’t even mind a Hawk win because iron sharpens iron and a hard-fought loss is great motivation for March.
-A down year for Iowa, sure, but Woods, the Dakota boys, and new blood excitement should tide fans over to a much more competitive future.
-All the best to two Ferrari Hawks. AJ is still an a-hole whose needless, reckless bravado nearly killed a woman. May he never see another NCAA match.
-Mirroring Cael’s formula seems improbable but has to include the sum of all parts (recruiting, training, nutrition, coaching, rest, etc…) with laser focus on each. His mystique and growing mountain of titles are another story.
-I admire confidence but hate arrogance, especially in my camp. Lions are loaded, yes, but only two have won NCAAs. Save the talk of team points record and 10 AAs. Be grateful for another title. The overconfident fall farthest.
-We’ve crossed swords and will again, but IRONBIRD rocks! I pity the fool who blocks his passionate posts.
-Watched and supported HS Spencer from the neighboring town and will always acknowledge his greatness. May the wrestling gods favor this young man with a stretch of health that lets him show the world his best, maybe one last time.
-Pick for a freshman NCAA title winner: Meyer Shapiro

I'd rather read the powerlifting stuff over Carl and psu crap...
The stuff outside of wrestling practice matters and the Soviets were doing this in an organized manner way back in the day. It took awhile for the good stuff they came up with to filter out in the West. I'm not sure how old you are but I remember those Soviet Bloc days.

No one is forgetting the money going towards the new facility. You forget that we needed to work for it and raise money from top to bottom to even get things started. The building has nothing to do with annual spending, heck PSU would not even need to dip into their slush fund or make more then a few phone calls to accomplish this.
'Let's not kid anyone into thinking the Money dept is anywhere near level, that said Iowa needs to do a better job of bringing in top talent.
Where is Penn State getting all of this money ? They are a not a well endowed university and their NIL in football is nothing impressive. I refuse to believe that all of their success is just on having more money. Wrestlers want to wrestle for the best and Iowa is the best and the standard in Wreslting. What is up with this ? Would Cael even be someone we would want if T and T were not here ? No way. PSU cheats and their wrestlers don’t graduate and they are all on steroids and outer PED’s. That’s why they are winning and all of these championships should be *. The nation knows this and PSU is not a reputable school or athletic program. I can’t stand them and feel strongly that the whole school and ALL of the Universities athletic programs should all have been banned indefinitely over the Joe Paterno sexual abuse scandal. Is there any chance that the NCAA or Congress (Kevin MacArthur, etc) would reopen potential litigation against the school and program and shut them down ? Are there any lawyers on this site to help with this ?

That’s why they are winning and all of these championships should be *. The nation knows this and PSU is not a reputable school or athletic program. I can’t stand them and feel strongly that the whole school and ALL of the Universities athletic programs should all have been banned indefinitely over the Joe Paterno sexual abuse scandal. Is there any chance that the NCAA or Congress (Kevin MacArthur, etc) would reopen potential litigation against the school and program and shut them down ? Are there any lawyers on this site to help with this ?

I think there is one dude on here with 6 or 7 screennames whose sole focus is to troll for politics and when that fails, get opposing fans upset and posting.

Where is Penn State getting all of this money ? They are a not a well endowed university and their NIL in football is nothing impressive.
