Thoughts on how soon that will happen? LOL

And yes, he still considers last season as year zero.

Some excerpts from the linked article:

It’s been 51 years since the Gophers won a Big Ten football championship. The last half century has been a far cry from the powerhouse Minnesota was in the decades prior. Fleck is aiming to return the Gophers to their former glory.

“Now, when you haven’t done that in 51 years, that’s very difficult to do in the new era of college football,” Fleck said. “Fifty years ago, we were the Alabama of football. We were that. Fifty years later, we are not that currently. That is what we are going to get back to.

“With our new facilities, $166-million facility, the Athlete’s Village … and all of your support, all of your help, we will get there...."

Wow! .... just wow! I guess there's hyperbole and then there's Fleck's brand of hyperbole.

Unlike Matt Campbell who has a targeted geography that he prefers ... and who likely might be willing to bide his time for a longer haul at ISU. Fleck at Minnesota still appears like a completely different story. If Fleck even remotely got the Gopher's to the upper crust of the B1G ... he'd then be bolting for greener pastures. Thus, he wouldn't even be sticking around for the new good days that he's trying to promise.

Somewhat of an odd combo ... he genuinely seems like a pretty good coach. But he's also one hell of a snake-oil salesman too. Very strange ....

Iowa's goal is to get to what level?

Would someone actually answer the question?
One could say that you ought to walk before you can run. Even more apt in this case is to even stand before you can run.

As for Iowa's goals ... Ferentz doesn't mince words ... he says that their goal every year is to win the conference. To even win the conference is a significant challenge. Should you ultimately go further and contend for a national championship ... thats just gravy.

The bigger goal though is to help mentor young people into people who are ready for challenges posed by the world as a whole ... and to help them become good and productive members of society along the way. To Ferentz, it's a people-oriented job ... and taking care of his players comes first.

so you actually think it's realistic for Minnesota fans to very soon be considering themselves Alabama's equal and on top of the college football world? PJ Fleck sounds like a snake oil salesman at best. Tim Brewster made similar types of comments and he didn't last very long, did he?

What ever it is it’s better than anything Minnesota has done in last 50 years and continue to be.

But when Fleck leaves for another team or fails we all can’t wait to read your childish post and rants as you so eloquently displayed when your local kid and legacy spurned minny for ND. Stay classy

Holy Schit!

The bigger goal is to help mentor young people

The reason I asked what Iowa's goals are is because they have to be severely low! If you do have any, you don't reach them.

You're still a big deal though.

Do you know how goals work? You set a series of them. Reaching the first one helps reach the second which helps reach the third and so on.

On the other hand if Fleck doesn’t win a national championship within 2 years then he should be fired and give his money back.

Awesome!

Give me an example of Iowa reaching the first goal, then the second, then the third.

So is Fleck prepping them for life like Iowa is? Since Iowa had more players drafted this year, wouldn't one say Fleck did the better job? I love this place by the way!

You have to love how this thread started with making fun of PJ Fleck and now we get to make fun of GoldTeam and the Gopher fan base. LOL

If Fleck is telling recruits and players that Minnesota is going to be the next Alabama then no, he is not doing a better job.

good god... I like guys who are positive, goal-driven and get up every day with a purpose. I strive to have that kind of energy and dedication and I think our world needs more of it.

But this guy is disconnected from reality to the point where it undermines his credibility. That face that he doesn't understand that subtlety... is his glaring weakness. He comes across as somebody who's trying too hard to escape something in his past.

I doubt it. Essentially Minnesota is a school rife with low life's and NCAA violations.

Crickets!

Why do all the trees in Iowa bend to the north?

Because Minnesota sucks.

Seriously, though, if trolling an Iowa football message board is how you get your jollies on a Friday night, you must be a real winner.

Speaking of winning, whatever winning Iowa has done has been a hell of a lot more than anything the Gophers have lately.

I like a man who shoots for the stars even if you fall short. I think any man worth his salt or any coach worth his salt what aspire to the same things. That being said we will kick their ass again

Kirk Ferentz has clearly stated a hundred times that our goal is to win the conference every year. If you do that, you are in the play-offs and playing for all the marbles. Is that clear enough GOLDTEAM?

It is kind of like that goal you had of being Johnny Holmes equal, Goldteam.

Perhaps, a better first goal would have been to be able to size up with Tatoo from Fantasy Island.

Remember this? "This has probably been brought up before, but would it be possible to create a separate forum so the same 5-8 people can talk about Nebraska, ISU, and Minn without bombarding the FP main page?"

I doubt whether the same 5-8 people that talk about Nebraska, ISU and Minnesota had anything to do with bombarding this main page.

Spot on. In Ferentz's mind, a win (or even strong challenge) of the conference - this conference - IS a play for a national title. Merely 3 years ago, I sat with eyes glued to the reveal of each week's big 4 and saw Iowa in it as we chased a conference title to the final seconds in Indianapolis. I'd say that and 5 top 10 finishes give creedence to the "pursue the conference, yield much more" mantra.

Maybe Minnesota will become Alabama...but I have no idea how a Gopher fan could look with contempt on what Iowa has done, is doing, and will do.

Should his goal be he wants to be a midland BIG 10 team like Iowa? Sure recruits would jump all over a comment like that. You guys make a big deal out of everything. Point being he is trying to sell his future plans to recruits, yes I think most MN fans know he probably won't get there, but I see nothing wrong with that comment.

Nice guy level. Graduate kids, beat isu and shake everyones hands on the rubber chicken circuit. Chew lots of gum, run the ball right and left, go to b10 negotiated bowl games after going 500 or less in conference play. Play the we aren’t sexy card over and over until all of America believes it so you look like you are overachieving

You mean nothing wrong other than being so damn absurd that anyone who buys in to it is a complete moron? Seriously, if you want to sell a product, you have to make the pitch believable. Which car are you going to buy: the one where the salesman says it gets 250 mpg, has 1,000 hp and never needs any maintenance whatsoever or the one from the salesman who says it get 36 mpg, has 180hp and needs nothing but oil changes until 100,000 miles?

With all the politics and media money involved required for getting to the NC game, setting a goal like that every year will grow stale over time. Might be good for the September pep rally’s, even for the mighty Ohio State, but one loss and your fans awake to the reality of the situation. One game at a time.

Dude, are you serious?

The KF era:

2000: First B1G wins, after going 0-8 in first year
2001: First >.500 season since 1997, including bowl win
2002-2004: 2 B1G championships, Orange Bowl appearance, 2 Jan bowl wins, 3 Top 10 finishes
2009: Orange Bowl win
2015: Undefeated regular season

You might be the worst and dumbest troll in message board history.

Why would I remember that? I didn't post it. Furthermore, whatever thread it may have been posted in - I didn't read it. I just scanned through the linked article and Fleck's spin machine kinda took my breath away.

First off - Ferentz and Co expect to have the Hawks competitive as it relates to trying to win the B1G. Thus, they're completely serious when saying that the goal is to win the B1G. To them, it is not some lofty goal. However, IF you win the B1G these days ... that kinda automatically situates you well to be in the picture to land in the CFB playoff. Given a slight jump of transitivity ... implicitly the goal is to get to the play-offs every year. Those aren't low goals.

Before they can start caring about WINNING a national championship ... they need to get there first and be competitive in such games first. Thus, genuinely being focussed on winning the B1G seems a completely reasonable goal. And, mind you, it's not a small goal either. More importantly, it's not an unreasonable one either.

Minnesota hasn't even sniffed a B1G championship ... let alone won one recently or even competed for one.
