Poll: Should Kirk retire after this season?

Should Kirk retire after the 2024 season?

Which “group” of fans are you referring to though? There are folks in any fanbase who aren’t ever satisfied. There’s a vocal group of Clemson fans begging for Dabo to move on or be fired. And has been for some time. Does that seem fair or wise? Kirk has obviously had a disastrous stretch of results against ranked teams lately. He’s not exactly losing a high percentage of games though. It’s quite the opposite. If the Hawks tank this season, he may retire. If don’t see him leaving either way though. And I don’t see the team tanking.
It's clearly such a large group with Kinnick selling out multiple seasons in a row now lol

Also I could have swore OP posted a huge tantrum less than a week ago about being done. Of course that was a lie.

I disagree to an extent. They returned a lot from that performance. It seemed like they had it solved offensively. Then it's really sucked since then. USC couldn't stop that Iowa offense.
That team had talent on offense. Solid o line Smith Marsette great speed and good return guy, Brandon Smith big strong outside receiver as well. Stanley was big and strong in the pocket plus of course we also had really good tight ends. Now we’re playing with D2 and D3 wide receivers who are just getting manhandled on their routes. Lachey working his way back from injury and a QB that’s got the body of a 50 year old man.

Gill is a D1 receiver, not the #1 he's asked to be though. I think RVZ is a D1 receiver too, just not there yet physically.

I'd agree w/that. RVZ realistically should have been red-shirted to gain more strength but on this team he's our number 2. Gill is fine but he was a backup at Northwestern for goodness sakes. He's a D1 receiver but again he's not a starter on most Big Ten Teams.

He sure is open on crossing routes quite a bit though. Agree Iowa is missing the deep threat, but I'm not sure a QB will have enough time to make that throw.

Unsure for me.

Winning 6 of the remaining 7 along with a bowl victory and he can/should stick around.

It would also be nice if the offense developed a modest passing attack, which I realize is the primary issue that most fans have.

I believe after next year is when Beth is going to have to either give him the traditional "vote of confidence" contract extension or work out a "moving in a different direction" plan.

You do realize that D1 includes 128 teams right? There are approximately 1300 scholarship wide receivers rostered on NCAA Division 1 teams.

Questioning whether a certain player such as Van Zee is “a D1 receiver” is itself an insult if you are a major college football player. For the record, I think Van Zee is already Top 500.

You are correct Frosty, he is always stirring the pot. Wish he would retire like he said he was going to do. Kirk is 44-18 the last five years, 71% win percentage. Iowa would be hard pressed to bring in another coach that will match his accomplishments. Kirk should retire on his own terms. With 199 wins, he has earned the right.

The wise course, albeit unlikely, would be for KF to turn over virtually total control to his coordinators. Parker is extremely qualified and Lester more in tune with the offensive schemes of today. KF is great at culture and leadership building. Each can play to their strength. So structured, KF's extremely cautious nature will no longer be a problem. I love KF and what he has done for so many years... but times change and successful people and programs adapt. This is not happening in Iowa City. Anything less than 9-3 this year will be absolute proof! ( I hope all those veteran players who stuck around for an extra year to do something great, have the character to press on for what remains possible... unburdened by what has gone before!
Despite there being little or no evidence, fans are absolutely convinced that KF makes a habit of overriding the coordinators. The reason is that there often is failure and only KF can coach failure.

It's the job of the HC to make decisions about 4th down, 2 pt conversions and fake kicks. Beyond that, what calls does he make?

I hope KF retires. It's time. The fans need a reboot even if he doesn't.

I think virtually EVERY FCS coach could take Iowa's teams the last 3 years and done as well or better with the schedules we had! We had pretty much 6-8 wins handed to us with the weakB1G west.

No, he’ll no.

For instance, under your ridiculous scenario, if KF requested (“his terms”) and regardless of success or state of the program, Beth Goetz is obligated to extend Kirk Ferentz’ employment contract for another 4 year term through 2033.

GTFOH with that nonsense.
You don't have a say, aren't you a Husker poser on our board? I'm sure you do want Kirk gone, he is 8-2 over the last 10 years vs. the cornholers. FWIW, 7-3 vs. ISU.

In all honesty, Kirk's replacement would likely be from in-house. I'm not sure much would change, but if it did in this instance, I wouldn't view it as a bad thing.

You left off Iowa is 8-2 against Nebraska the past 10 years. That's really gotta gnaw at you Husker homers!
Why does it always go to this ad hom bullshit? Honestly, this schtick of someone being the fan of another team gets old and derails the shit out of topics. god forbid someone mention another team on this board, or have realistic expectations.

Serious programs would had fire him 20 years ago. The weak scheduling keep him around. Guess, he will quit after this year. With absolutley no talent the next two years, It will get real ugly. Schedules are not Michigan or UCLA tough but too tough for this program. If he stays after the next two 4-8 seasons (if that) you know he is hanging around for the money.

USC fired that miserable coach after that loss. KF has beaten like 5 good team in 25 years. 25 years and nothing to show but a bowl win over a wishbone team. A full career without winning at OhioSt lol. Is that even possible after 25 years. Vandy guy beat Bama.

I'm not saying Kirk should be fired, but nobody "earned the right to retire on their own terms" unless they own the company. Kirk is just an employee, and an extremely well paid one at that, and his accomplishments will be considered. But the University of Iowa is the employer. They decide and have every right to decide if/when Kirk leaves the position and should weigh current performance vs alternatives above all else in making any decisions regarding his status. Historical achievements are what statues are for.

Of course not. Kirk is still winning and recruiting good football players. The odds of his successor being as good as he is are slim. Those of you who are whining that we aren’t competitive enough against the top tier need to start kicking in more nil money. If that doesn’t happen we will always struggle against the top tier.

I love the 11 "unsures". Like they need more time to decide. LOL
I'm one of them. I vacillate between wanting KF to pass Woody in wins, and then thinking he should leave that record alone, like he told Kevonte Martin-Manley concerning Kinnick's punt return record.

That I stopped watching? No. I have.

But if believing that makes you feel better, superior, or whatever it makes you feel, go for it.

I'm just kidding, man. I'm not your enemy! I guess I wonder if you stopped watching why you'd post in the football forum anymore then? Do you watch highlights after the games?

What built Iowa's teams the last three years? Who built the culture that brought those players to Iowa? Who hired the coaches, many of whom are fantastic and extremely loyal to KF, to develop young players and make them game changers? There are ways people can and do shit on Kirk's system. But, your attempt to do so is utter garbage.

Chiefs rolled out 4 tight ends on Monday night and got Kelce 1 v1 vs a linebacker and Mahomes hit him for an easy pitch and catch for 12 yards. Scheme matters. If you stink at receiver like we do get creative. Andy Reid is 65 years old and still out there creating mismatches without his top running back and 2 top receivers. Football just shouldn't be as hard as we make it anymore.
Reid is exponentially more imaginative and less rigid than Kirk could ever consider. A true hall of Fame coach.

Anyone who wants Kirk to leave/get fired needs to stop buying season or game tickets for football and stop buying concessions at games. When Iowa loses enough money, they'll pay the buyout for Kirk to go away, just like they did with Lickliter. He should have been gone after the rhabdo fiasco, and instead he gave double middle fingers to his players, the fans and the University by giving Doyle an award because he knew Barta had about as much backbone as a wet noodle.

Lots of fans here probably agree with this, but I need help with the logic. KF has 123 B1G wins, plus 10 wins in bowl games and 14 wins against ISU - so 147 wins against the B1G or other FBS teams. If he has won only 6 games against "good" teams, then he has won 141 games against teams that were "not good".

He's 10-8 against PSU
He's 7-8 vs Michigan
He's 2-10 against OSU

That's 19 wins against the best the B1G has to offer.

So, why are the rest of the teams in the B!G "not good"? I mean Nebraska, Minny, Illinois, NW, Wisky, Purdue, Indiana Mich St, Rutgers, Maryland all of these teams have been not good for 25 years? Does Iowa has some advantage over all those teams? Hot recruiting territory? Huge boosters? Why is Iowa better than all those teams over the last 25 years (Wisky being the possible exception)

If all you need is a good HC, then how has KF managed to defeat those teams the vast majority of the time?

Answer: KF has built the program to a place where they are good enough that the majority of their wins are unimpressive. Kind of an upside down logic if you ask me.

Tom.....

Steve....

Todd.

Everything went downhill.
Who was the last coach to make the Sweet 16? What season was that again? Didn't Dr. Davis win more NCAA games in his final season (2) than Iowa won collectively in the next 15 seasons? Firing Dr. Davis was moronic. In the light of history those who wanted Dr. Davis fired had a reach far beyond their grasp.

Even a dog doesn't stick it's paw in the same fire twice.
