Positives

1) I really really like CJ Frederick. I think he has even more potential than Weiskamp, which is high praise. He is a scorer and plays exceptional defense. He reminds me of a shorter Jake Kelley.

2) Touissant is the point guard we've been missing. Once he plays a little more under control--watch out. Kid is lightning quick and has NY playground skills/confidence.

3) This shouldn't be a bad loss because DePaul is legit and will probably make the tournament this year.

4) I think the team will bounce back. We still have solid players in Garza, Wieskamp, Bohannon, Fredrickson, Kriener and Touissant. Hoping Nunge and Pemsl are just rusty.

5) The team was not prepared for the speed and scrappiness of DePaul but this loss should help them know what needs work (defending the 3 and too many turnovers). This will help them improve more so than blowing out a terrible team rated 300+

6) Should not negatively impact our RPI too badly.

7) We have plenty of time/season to bounce back.
Commenting on your 3) DePaul looks like a good team but it's a bad loss, in my opinion -

Iowa got run out of their home arena. Down 20 most of the game? Awful.

Not a whole lot the team could have done about DePaul's hot 3 point shooting. A lot of the 3s they hit were contested and a few feet behind the line.

With that said, if DePaul has a more normal shooting game, they probably still win by 7+ points because they were breaking down our defense like a hot knife through butter for much of the game, and they forced 19 turnovers. It's very possible that this game will be an enigma, but this team seems to have the same weaknesses last year's did (i.e., athleticism) and we're going to need great shooting performances to win against good competition.

I do think there's a lot of skill on this team (e.g., all of our starting 5 can shoot with range), but the lack of athleticism means we don't have much margin for error. They're going to look overmatched at times, but will likely pull of some surprising wins like last year's team did. I'm guessing we'll finish just above .500 and make the NIT.

The whole Joe T. situation is going to test Fran. Will he play Joe T. and sacrifice Connor's playing time or will he do what is best for the team and sit Connor?

LOL...your two options are the same options.

He will get better with more pt; however, he looked eerily like Dickerson the few times he played while at Iowa.

Dickerson didn't play defense...JoeT does. I agree JoeT is going to be a turnover machine...you gotta start him now and let him figure it out. He is fast!

If a game is close, bring in Connor to close a game with FT. I don't think Iowa will have that problem of having a lead to close games very often.

I see this as well,... Let's swallow our medicine early with Joe and give him a chance to get his game under control...

Slow it down and build a half court offense around Garza and Kriener.

that would give lots of teams fits

Sounds like Lickliters approach...walk the ball up the court ..with poor athletes you can't score in 1/2 court and you can't defend.

Given the current roster it’s the best way to go.

roflmao, run and gun with five white guys from the YMCA against real Power 5 athletes.

Actually they really weren't.

I rewatched the game to see what Iowa did so poorly and in reality it wasn't that bad.

I've watched Iowa get shredded by dribble penetration the last 3 years. That didn't happen this game until mid way through the second when it was basically garbage time.

They did get some good ball movement buckets against the zone, but the 3s were the what changed the game.

All of DePauls first half threes were stand still or pull up shots with a defender right in front of them. Seriously they didn't get any off of what would be considered running good offense. They weren't even using screens They took bad isolation shots and made them.

Granted Iowa doesn't have the type of athletes to take those shots away but most nights what Iowa did will be just fine defensively.

CJ Frederick is a surprisingly good defender, Joe W , Evelyn and Connor were solid. Joe T will be a lock down guy soon. They were switching well.

Only time Iowa got abused was when JBO , (who looked awful on D) was in and when we ended up on a bad switch with our 5 guarding a 1.

The interior of the zone didn't look good but we're stuck playing allot of that because of Garza.

We aren't built to play the "swarm ball" game that DePaul brought last night,... kryptonite to us.

I don't think you can take positives from getting boat-raced at home against Depaul.

And I wouldn't take too much away from what a couple guys did in the second half when the game was already out of hand. I don't think Depaul will make the tournament.

Also, hilarious that OP says Frederick is going to be better than Wieskamp and then says he is like Jake Kelly? lol what?

3 ways to fix that.

1. Garza has to stop forcing against double teams. I don't think he passed out of a single one all night and he must of had 5 bad turnovers in the first half alone by trying to bulldoze through two defenders like they weren't there.

2. Play Joe T. Period. Beat speed with speed.

3. Stop playing multiple bigs at once. Kriener helped on the boards but he had a bunch of bad turnovers too because if Garza is on the block Ryan ends up in no man's land with the ball and he isn't a good decision maker out there. The high low thing doesn't work.

Let those two play separately.

I'd agree with all of that, but even at our smallest we aren't quick enough to deal with what we encountered last night...

Which is why they are in desperate need of better athletes, something which many of us have been saying for years.

Some of this is because we are overstaffed with wings,... the recent move to expand the guard court will help with opponents like this.

Thanks for that, and kudos to subjected yourself to watching that again.

I'm not sure quickness was a primary factor.

IMO that was more of a pre determined talking point for the announcer.

DePaul was definitely good on defense but offensively nothing special.

1. They shot contested 3s and made just about all of them. Mostly stand still or off the dribble.

2. Garza didn't want to pass, he had atleast 5 turnovers in the first half. That's not really quickness, it's bad decision making.

3. The rest of the team probably had an additional 12 just purely retarded turnovers. Not all totally unforced but all totally avoidable.

4. Iowa missed at least 4 uncontested 3s from our best shooters. Mostly Weiskamp. Even with as terrible as Iowa played thats a totally different game if both teams shoot normal.

5. Iowa was flat out unprepared and some of the players didn't play hard. Nunge and Bohannon especially.

Two biggest factors IMO, after watching it 3 times, were they're ridiculous shooting and Iowas awful turnovers.

I agree, but will say that I consider this a better loss than the loss Iowa suffered last year (to Rutgers) at home (in February). From what I can remember, that game seemed eerily similar to this game.....and hopefully we just got it out of our system early.

Agreed. We will see what they are made, especially the best players (Wieskamp, Garza, Bohannon). Will they learn from it and up their game. I saw a team that was just not ready to play and intimidated and once they let it get out of hand early, it was too late.

Iowa isn't as bad as they played and Depaul isn't as good as they played (though I think people are selling them short - they have been building for 3 years and added transfers). Yes, there are some definite holes - and glaring ones especially at PF right now. But I would be shocked if Wieskamp, Garza, and Bohannon all 3 have games like that at the same time again this year. Wieskamp is just to talented and by all accounts has the mental make-up and work ethic to turn this into a positive. If Bohannon is going to play like he has looked the first 3 games, I think he should shut it down. Let Touissant get his minutes to keep improving and let Bohannon recover.

I have been thrilled by Frederick so far. He plays fearless and tough and smart. He seems to have an all-around solid game and didn't seem intimidated at all. Plus, he seems to have that mid-range game that has been missing since Jok left. Those reports of him outplaying Moss in practice seems very viable.

I don't want to see JBO on the floor again until next season.

Totally agree on Fredrick. I'm shocked at how good he is. Looks very solid on both ends.

He and Joe T are why I think Iowa still has a solid chance at the tournament but Fran better wake up soon to who his pg is.

The only positive is that Fran will take a good objective look at the DePaul film and decide whether or not he wants that kind of mess of a game to happen again...or maybe one assistant can speak some sense to him about what players should be playing vs those that are not ready for prime time (whether that be talent, conditioning or mental outlook)

you lost me at if a game is close.

you mean, like, when the game starts?

It’s going to be a record breaking season.
Stop. I know this wasn't meant as a positive, and its pretty early to be kicking this team down the road, like some of Lick's teams. Joe W. got his eyes opened, and he'll learn from this, he's all business. Lets see how they adjust to this game for a few weeks, before stuff like this...
