Press Release: Kemerer having season-ending surgery

Ashnault is similar, so is the kid from Stanford who missed last year with injury and now went to Lehigh. It used to be you had to miss two years but they have been giving them out a lot to people who only missed one.
I thought Ashnault situation was similar also but it's not he only wrestled in 3 competitions as a redshirt due to injury then missed all of last year with a injury.Kem wrestled in 6 dates as a redshirt and wasn't injured.Schram also wrestled 2 events as a redshirt and got injured then he missed a year due to injury

So in Ash's case he only he 3 dates whereas Kem had 5 dates..hmm..will be interesting..

hope he gets it. Like I said..we want to see kids get 4 times to compete for championships. Hell I'd even give Suriano another shot if he wanted since his was cut short right before NCAA's but that's just me

You and every Rutgers fan :)

5 dates per Wrestlestats. One thing in Kems favor is his last competition date was 1/30 whereas Ash wrestled 3/2. Not sure if that matters or not.

Looks like Joey Slaton's spot, if he can get down. ;)
Seriously, praying for the best for Kem. If (BIG IF) he can get the 6th year, that could work out well for the team, but I can't remember an Iowa guy ever getting one. Here's to hoping they really have loosened up on giving them. We sure have been snake-bitten with key injuries this entire decade.

Was Kem injured his redshirt year which kept him from competing after Jan 30?I'm not sure but I don't remember him being injured

Mike is an amazing wrestler! Likely a title contender this year,if healthy. Come back stronger.

This situation absolutely sucks for Kemerer, the team, his family, etc. But one silver lining is, like others have mentioned, it potentially makes our 2021 team that much stronger assuming he gets his 6th year, and it also probably gives him his best shot at an individual title, assuming that Zahid and Hall both finish up next year and don't Olympic RS.

Heres to hoping his rehab goes smooth and he comes back better and stronger than ever. All aboard the Bowman train now.

Someone above said Ashnault wrestled a lot more.

"I'm not sure how many matches Kem wrestled in his redshirt year but Ashnault wrestled around 23 times IIRC and wrestled in Universities after the season and still got that extra year (this year)."

From Rutgers page:

2013-14 (As a freshman): Redshirt season ... went 15-3 wrestling unattached at 141 pounds ... finished in first place at the National Collegiate Open, going 5-0 to claim top honors (March 2) ... went 3-2 at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open (Nov. 10) ... finished in third place with a 7-1 clip at the Clarion Open (Nov. 3).

I would like to see bowman make the cut if that is possible. However, I think Wilson is raw and bringing some things together. Now that he knows he has the spot a little team momentum could still throw him on the podium.

The dates are what matter Ashnault wrestled in
3 dates. My opinion the staff put out feelers to see what Kem chances are of a medical before they opted for surgery.

He wrestled all the way on March 2nd so he was not hurt no matter what dates he chose to wrestle.
Was hurt had surgery missed from Nov 12 until March 2.The March 2 event was not a NCAA event so it doesn't count. It was the NCO

Hope he gets his 6th year. Everyone knows the amount of work and dedication these guys put into the sport. Would love for him to get 2 more shots at bringing home that gold. Go Hawks and speedy recovery!

Would not surprise me if Kem has documented injuries last year as well and the time he missed the second half of the season was more than just the weight cut. Wouldn't affect the 30%, 3 date discussion, but would factor into helping him make an objective case for a sixth year of eligibility, particularly if the injury this year is the same injury or an extension of his injuries last year.

Can someone help me understand the inside joke that is Grothus?

Brody Grothus wrestled for the Hawks a few years back. And let’s just say that many around here thought he was going to dominate folks after attempting to move down a weight. As a matter of fact, an epic thread was made with many fans viewing him as a savior of the program. Needless to say, BG never lived up to the online hype and I’m not sure he ever made the desired weight cut successfully.

Words I never thought I would hear. I thought the running gag on Grothus was ubiquitous, but I was mistaken.

Brody had an solid Sophomore season beating many ranked guys and pulling some major upsets at Midlands and during the season at 149. He looked to be a solid contributor for the next two years but the next year was beaten out by Brandon Sorenson.

Knowing he was a better option for us that our current 141, the effort was made to shrink him down, but the cut was too much and his energy level was not able to be maintained at the lower weight (when he was sent out at 141).

HR had a thread about it that might be the longest in history. Here is a great article about what he went through: https://www.thepredicament.com/2016/03/grothus-leaves-mark-iowa/

The joke is more about fan expectations and the length of the thread (which became almost more important than Brody's actual results to many) than about Brody himself. Needless to say Brody was a fan favorite and is the Original HR Superstar.

Bummed about Kemdawg he will come back stronger I’m sure. It’s great that the Hawks have some horses in the barn.
If in fact Bowman was at 182.5 for the last weigh in then he is already on his way down, if the weight cut does not affect him to much he could very well make the stand in March. This still will be a great season for Iowa and us Hawkeye fans. Yeah the chances at a championship did not improve for this year, but my optimism looking forward to March have not diminished.

Terrible news, hope for a speedy and full recovery. One silver lining is that he will not have to contend with Zahid or Hall for a title if he is granted a 6th year of eligibility unless Hall decides to take a RS himself.

I think both those guys Olympic redshirt. Zahid aint beating dave Taylor but I can see Hall winning at 63!
