Probably not Fran's best

Fran's alternatives were basically JoshO and Mulvey. Josh is NOT a good choice to guard Wisky's offense, and I'm not sure what to make of Mulvey. At least Kingsbury carries a few pounds. ;) You don't want to admit it, but Iowa is very short on quality big men, and that is even more apparent with Kris injured. All those who have been bitching about Connor for the past few years, and I suspect you were one of them at times, Iowa is damn lucky he came back for his Covid year.
“Josh is not a good choice,” maybe. (Ogundele does have the best defensive rating of all 11 regular players, so I guess your basing your statement on your personal opinion, is that correct?

but we know the FACTS of what Frans decision on lineup did, a 9-0 run in 3 minutes was obviously a terrible mistake and was the most pivotal moment in 2h when the game was lost

continue on with your opinion based defense

Did the coaches choose to put JoshO in against Wisconsin? That should tell you something, but stay in your fantasy world that stats based on a few minutes suggest that Josh will be Iowa's next All-B1G player, if Fran just gives him a chance. Most of us see what Josh is without the need to search for statistics. He will be very helpful for a few minutes against Purdon't, and maybe a couple of other teams with overpowering centers.

Did any of the local scribes post-game or the last few days question Fran about the stupid request by his son to look at replay of a possible hook/hold that cost an important timeout?? Just flat out dumb!! You think he does that if someone who wasn’t his son asked for it? I doubt it.

Oh no, a stank face! I wish he'd just crawl around on the court and beat his wife like a normal coach

If your willing to put five guards in the lineup at the same time, are you really losing anything by giving Josh 4 to 6 minutes every game. If you want him ready when the time comes to play the bigs most teams can throw at you, he has to get steady minutes every game. Instead of being thrown in every 3rd game. He's got no stamina, but he does well the limited minutes, I've seen him play.

“He does play well in limited minutes“

agree, Ogundele continues to perform well in every opportunity, its evident in the analytics, that show Ogundele as the top performing IOWA player

fran does have a documented history of blundering his player rotations leading to losses and the wisconsin game is unfortunately another example.

Blundered right to B10 tournament championship last year. Four games in four days…. And that’s documented history.

Very wise take…
what’s the worst that could happen? Lose the game…?

Another epic blundering of in game coaching, turning a 12 point lead into a 12 point deficit against a 31 point underdog, and did so by playing the same horrifically ineffective defensIve players the entire game, running their legs out from them is 2nd half route.

bench players 3-7, 2-4 (3PT), 10pts, 3 R, 2 A, 2 S, 2 TO, in 26 min.

it’s obvious

Fran plays 5 guys all but 9min as EIU drops 55 2H points to Iowa 38
  • rebraca 20m
  • sandfort 20m
  • Perkins 20m
  • Ulis 16m
  • pmac 15
for the love of God even a 1st yr Jr High coach would bring is some fresh guys to play D.

what an inexcusable but totally predictable coaching blunder

Keegan was kinda important.

I was pleased to see Iowa win the BTT after 12 years. With only14 B1G teams, wasn't Fran kinda due?

I get it Fran is little bit above average coach that is 0-for his career in making a sweet16 in NCAA play.

.The Narrative from is friends and family plan is Iowa fans should be counting their blessing Fran is Iowa coach. Meh...I miss what Iowa B-ball use to be but realize it is difficult to compete in NIL and portal era, especially when you don't embrace/provide leadership in either venue. If this is as good as it gets, no wonder Carver attendence sucks.

frans PR Apologist

asked a specific question, Why did you choose to play starters 20, 20, 20, 16, 15 min each in 2H when a terrible EIU team was running them outta the gym
  • 55 points
  • 72% FG%
  • points in paint 34-12
  • fastbreak points 19-2
apologists insert default answer to every criticism here——Fran has won 50 games, that covers if all

but NEVER answer the question as to his utter blundering coaching rotations

i guess it’s because it’s literally indefensible , yes?

Have you been attending the practices? Do you work with the team every day? The answer is, of course not. So you don’t know or understand his decisions.

So the bottom line is that, based on ignorance, you know more than this coach who’s won 500 games in his career? The answer again is, of course not.

There’s other terms to describe that way of thinking, but the common thread is that you take superficial evidence as evidence of what you want to believe….as a Fran hater.

This one is on the players,.. Iowa bench with no starters, no coaching staff and no officials should win this game,.. It's a long season, shake it off and move on...

Wrong, wrong and wrong.
  • I’ve often times stated In Fran I Trust (not a hater of Fran, a hater of his specific decisions that result in losses)
  • coach that has won 500 games, everything Is a nail with thta hammer, isn’t it? Yet you can’t reply to the specific question posed to you.
  • Do I attend practices? No. I do watch the games and see the analytics
for the record, you can state that Fran’s has had a very successful career, has won 500 games, but has reached a point that nearly everyone reaches, regardless of previous success, like-ability, nearly every coach reaches their high water mark, where they fail, emphasizing offense over defense has its limitation, as does Fran.

Fran has reached his Peter Principle.

That’s the same conclusion you reached about about his B10 Tournament success prior to last year’s B10 tournament right? Because that’s where your “principle” falls apart….

Cherry picking now

It seems everyone is complaining about how many minutes he played his starters on Wednesday....but lets look at the whole picture. Besides Filip, Patrick, Tony, Payton, and Ahron, who else is available on the bench? You had Kris and Connor unavailable, then there's Desonte and Josh Dix that are legit freshmen that both really needed a redshirt year but because of Fran's lack of recruiting they had to play and both need more experience before they can contribute effectively and everyone also knows Fran doesn't like to rely on freshman. Then there are Ogundele and Mulvey that are neither able to contribute to any floor minutes that their scholarship provides. That's the 11 scholarship players that Fran has, then you have the walk-ons that everyone loves to see at the end of a blow out, but if Fran gives them meaningful minutes everyone screams and yells that they shouldn't be playing because they're not worthy.
Because of Kris's injury and then Connor sitting out because of his wrist, he had only 7 players he could rely on and 2 of them are inexperience freshmen neither of them capable of guarding anyone on the front line or anywhere else on Eastern Illinois team.
Eastern Illinois took advantage of Iowa's lack of bench and experience and virtually ran with it and even it Kris and Connor return before the Nebraska game Iowa is just an injury away from another short bench.
That's the result of poor recruiting and lack of urgency using the portal to bring in quality bench players that can back-up Patrick, Filip, and Kris and that's on Fran.

Dix and Bowen don't need to redshirt. Guards dont redshirt. Bowen especially just needed more PT earlier.

The rest is true.

Terrible depth this year.

Every big Fran lost out on got paid to go somewhere else.

Real question is what the hell was Barta doing for the last year? The payment system should have been ready to go.

Accusing of Cherry picking…..that’s rich coming from you! Bahaha!

Obviously it doesn’t matter what is explained to you……this reminds me of modern political debate. You’re going to believe, what you want to believe, regardless of objective evidence that contradicts your view. Then the tactic of accusing the other of doing what you’re doing (cherry picking) just nails it.

You either know you’re wrong and just can’t acknowledge it…. Or worse yet, you really can’t see it…

1st.
why do you think Ogundele can’t play and contribute solid defensive minutes?
Ogundele has the best defensive metrics of ANY player in this team. (Albeit SSS)

please share how he could have done poorer than theses results?
EIU shot 72%, out scored Iowa by 20 in paint, in 2H.

Fresh legs solves many defensive liabilities, recall Phil Parker rotates 7-9 DL each game to keep their defensive energy high, how could these fresh legs do worse than being out scored 19-2 in fast break points. My god, you could have 5 guys in wheels chairs and replicate this….

also, why would you say IOWA can’t play it’s freshman , while EIU could? I don’t understand the logic? Please explain the difference?

Who won the game and whose freshmen did better? Did Bowen or Dix light it up? You know damn well that Fran doesn't like to play freshmen extended minutes. Fran came into this year with a surplus of 2 scholarships and it should have been 3 if he hadn't brought back Ogundele. If Fran had thought Josh would have been the answer don't you think he would have used him more minutes then he did. Against athletic players that Eastern had, Josh was a fish out of water on defense and Fran saw this too. Josh can make layups all day, but you can only play defense like a brick wall against certain teams, Eastern was not one of them.
My opinion of Josh is of a player that just does not belong in the Big Ten, Just my opinion and it appears that in 3 years, Fran is beginning to think that way too, but he has no choice but to play him limited minutes because Riley Mulvey hasn't developed physically or mentally enough to get playing time. Both players were a hit and miss so far in the scheme of things in Frans recruiting world.
If you think differently, again, that's your prerogative. Until I see some major improvement in Joshes ability to not only play defense, but go after rebounds like his playing life depended on it, his sole purpose on this team is to give Rebraca a few minutes rest, other then that he can use his scholarship to play cheerleader along with Riley Mulvey.

ogundele plays 3 min, goes 1-1, 1 off Reb, IOWA was +2 while he’s in…

I just don’t see that he was like a “fish out of water” Please explain why?

frans starting 5 played entire 2h and gave up,55 to a team that only averaged 61

that is the exact definition not playing D, the very thing you claim Ogundele can’t do.

im astonished at the absolute lengths people,go to justify their narratives

Fran sees Josh in practice every day, we don't. obviously Fran thinks he's ahead of Riley or he would play him, but we don't know the extent of his conditioning, so if Fran only plays him in short bursts, I'm ok with that, but I just watch the games and I'm not the coach.
If Fran plays Josh only 2 or 3 minutes a game, gee, just think, all I can do is go on an Iowa message board and state my opinion. Guess what, that doesn't change a thing and anyone else that gives their opinion doesn't mean a thing either.
Fran's going to do what Fran's going to do and we have no say in it.....does that make sense? Peace on Earth and Marry Christmas!

You gotta love the McCaffery hater's logic. First they say the team can't be tired for the Wisconsin game because they're young men and ought to be able to play a series of closely scheduled games. Then on the other hand McCaffery doesn't sit them enough during a game to let our bench (which they also have issues with) to play more. Damn! If only McCaffery had their coaching experience!

I agree. I agree
but fran doesnt play Ogundele in short bursts. 3m in 1h vs EIU. That’s 3 min 1x…
I agree, I’m nit here to change Fran s mind , only those here.
100% agree, Fran’s does what he wants, regardless of it making sound sense or consistent with successful coaching tenets

peace to all tonight
