Didn't Perry leave the HWC because he wanted an avenue back into college coaching? Looks like the door is shut on that now...

I hope Mark realizes that Sunkist is exactly what and where he needs to be. Unless he's matured A LOT since Illinois, he doesn't need to be a college coach ever. He works best with high level guys who are self-motivated.

That is what he claimed at the time. Perry seems to be a little bit of a shapeshifter to me. He'll say what he needs to say at the time to get the outcome he is looking for.
He just seems like the kind of guy who wants to be a HC but doesn't want to stay anywhere long enough to earn the job.

Either that or he wears out his welcome quickly.

Or maybe he leaves if doesn’t like the environment he’s in?

I thought it was because the females in the HWC got the boot?
That "probably" was a part of it, but one would hope that wasn't the extent of it. At least IMO. Not like there aren't Wrestlers still around at HWC.

False. The female wrestlers did not "get the boot". A couple of the girls wrestlers weren't doing what they were supposed to work ethic wise and got a stern talking to, took it the wrong way and then all the sudden it turned into "iowa is defunding the girl wrestlers".

Perry left because he had an opportunity to make more money and further his career, no qualms about that, and best of luck to him.

He is one heck of a recruiter though. He brought in some big names to Illinois and had some impressive results. Have they had any multiple NCAA champs besides Martinez and Delgado? Those were both his guys.

Which is exactly why he needs to be an RTC Coach. Recruit high level guys and coach them. So yes, he recruited an excellent class - now ask those guys how many of them he paid attention to? 2.

He just doesn't have the patience to deal with guys who aren't 100% bought in all the time. He'll literally stop coaching guys who aren't completely self-motivated. Which is why coaching Senior level guys is the greatest synthesis of his coaching skillset.

Do RTC coaches recruit much? And if he "doesn't have the patience to deal with guys who aren't 100% bought in all the time," that would seem to suggest he may not be the best recruiter, because by definition if you have to recruit someone they're not "100% bought in" right?

Recruiting is 100% nothing more than being a salesman. Used car salesman sell a crap product. But they can sell. And recruiting is like dating - both the coach and the athlete put their best faces on. Every recruit says they're going to be 100% dedicated and they want to win 4 national titles, blah, blah, blah. But very few have the work ethic and very few coaches will chase you down to make you work that hard.

And Perry is the latter. He will not force you to work hard and if he feels like you're not 100% bought in (or just aren't good enough even if you do work that hard) - he will not coach you.

He sure seems to get plenty of pretty fair Coaching gigs for being half-assed at it as you suggest. I don't know what he's like, but you appear to be speaking in absolutes where in reality it's one person's opinion. My perspective from the cheap seats anyway...

And for whatever it's worth, I was never on board for Perry to be Iowa's Head Coach down the road if the job opened up.

Have spoke with Mark on occasion and he loves the sport and will jaw with anybody about it. He was born into it so I can kind of see VHS’s point; if an individual doesn’t buy in, welcome to adulthood because you will get left behind. I could see him being in Colorado Springs one day and do think his heart is with coaching freestyle. Weird, considering he was such a good folk wrestler.

Great coaches (or leaders) are one’s that can see the individual from a 10,000 ft view…what an individual is vs what they can be. Having to coach 40 guys with different backgrounds, cultures, levels of maturity is a challenge. Some, like a Cass, Lee, Kemerer etc come in near a finished product...it's just a matter of pointing them in the right direction and managing their growth in the sport. Others have to be micromanaged. The trick is not coaching to the lowest level while not leaving the other guys behind. Some just don't have the patience for it.

What senior level guys is he coaching at AZRTC?
Forrest Molinari, Nick Suriano, Zahid Valencia, Kayla Miracle, Tanner Hall, the college guys when they come over. I'm missing more than a few names.

He's an excellent coach. But he's an excellent coach for a certain type of athlete. I'm speaking in absolutes because it's been true at every one of his stops. Listen to the Quentin Wright Bader interview. Perry only coached those 2 when he was at Penn State. He would literally leave Molinaro's corner if he didn't think he was competing hard enough.

And it's just not exactly an unknown thing. But yeah, I've confirmed it.

Uuuummm, OK.

As long as he's happy doing what he's doing, that's good enough for me. He's a Hawkeye no matter where he goes.
And, he's a major coaching talent, with some success with it on different levels. The guys and gals that he coaches think highly of him as well. There aren't many decent openings in Div I wrestling, but when the time comes, you may see him in a head coaching position at some point.

One of my college P.E. teachers was an assistant wrestling coach, and was a great wrestler, but his P. E. class was a joke. Later, he did become a legendary coach with a great record, but you'd have never predicted it from his early teaching gig. People change, and so will Mark Perry.

I’m sure they did. Invite them to stay January and February and then get their opinion.

Iowa population growth 4.7% over the decade.

Arizona’s 12%

My bro in law and his family did come at a bleak time. Still loved it.

I lived in Arizona a combined 25+ years. In Iowa, we have 2-3 months that suck unless one loves the freezing weather. In Arizona, there are 5-6 months that suck unless you love it super hot. For example, right now at 1000, it is 91 degrees. Late Oct-March is $$$. Walking around Christmas day in flip flops is kinda cool. But going out to the car in July after work when its 115 kinda sucks too. During the summer, hardly anybody is outside doing leisure activities unless its by the pool. We have had three visits from Az family and all were amazed at the number of folks out jogging or exercising here in IC even when it was cold (Christmas time).

Both have their natural beauty. If you have never lived anywhere except for Iowa (or the Midwest), you are knocked off your feet by a place like Az. But take a life long Arizonan (which there are few) who is visiting here for the first time, they are pretty amazed as well. My nephew was here a few weeks ago and he couldn't stop taking pictures.

There are a lot of places I love to visit, but Iowa is the only place I want to live. It isn't for everybody, but I loved growing up exploring the cow pastures (even wading through the creeks full of cow sh** and leeches) and the timber with the hidden swimming holes.

Thank you!
My brother is moving to Tuscon from CR in October. We'll see how next summer goes for him.

Great time to move. Likewise, I moved here from Tucson in April. Got the best before the worst.

My best advice for the summers is hydrate and have a plan if out hiking when it’s hot…start early. Every year, there are people that die from heat related deaths while doing leisure activities. Good places to hike are Sabino Canyon, Mt Lemmon, Picacho Peak north of Tucson off I-10.

Stay out of Tucson Unified school district if he has kids. Its a dumpster fire.

Marana, Vail, and Sahuarita are good places to live just outside of Tucson. If he has $$$, the Catalina foothills are nice.

Any wrestlers in the family? Tucson Cyclones is a good club in the Flowing Wells area.

Don’t be scared to go into the dump looking Mexican food places. Guero Canelos and BKs have great tacos and Sonoran hot dogs. Lots of good food and pizza in the the U of A and downtown area. Excellent “bird” watching down there as well if your bro is into that kind of thing haha.
