Question: Best wrestler from Iowa currently?

So, I was going through the roster and I know it has been discussed quite regularly about how the State of Iowa does not produce the same number of All American's as Pennslyvannia or Ohio and I understand the population difference and other reasons. But, I was going through Iowa's roster and it appears at least to me that the best wrestler on Iowa's entire roster from the State of Iowa is Brandon Sorenson hands down. However, when looking for a 2nd best or 3rd best the pickings get rather slim. Is Cash Wilke or Carter Happel the runner up? Both of those guys aren't even the best guy on the roster at their weight. Is really only one wrestler from the State of Iowa capable of being a legitimate starter for this storied program? Well two, because Wilke looks every bit a legit starter, Warner is just a freak of nature Freshmen. And yes, I considered Bowman, Laux, and Glynn, but most poster on here don't want them starting.

So, anyway, it got me to thinking, who are the best wrestlers currently on NCAA DI rosters who are born and raised in the State of Iowa? I'm not an Iowan so I truly don't know, but I was curious. Anyone care to help me out on building a "best lineup from the State of Iowa?"

125-
133- Laux
141- Happel
149- Sorenson
157-
165-
174-
184- Bowman
197- Wilke
Hvy- Costello

I'm interested in building one from PA, OH, ILL, and OK as well.

Max Lyon ( he's going to be good), Freddie Stroker (if you count him), Gilman and Clark are just one year out of college. John Meeks should have been a force. We haven't fallen that far.

125 - Schwarm - having a good Vegas.
133 -
141 -
149 - Sorenson (Thomsen also very good) - NCAA 2nd
157 -
165 - Steiner - NCAA Q (many good wins)
174 -
184 - Foster - NCAA AA
197 - Miklus - 2x AA
Hvy - Harrington or Isley (both solid) . Harrington NCAA Q

The Iowa team is not competing with Ohio, PA, Jersey, but would still make a good dual team against all other states

What about Cali and ILL I am interested to see where they are in this conversation

You'd consider taking Lizak over Cruz? I stopped reading after that.

So far this is what I have for Iowa. Anyone care to add 157 or 174?

125- Schwarm
133- Laux or Jack Wagner?
141- Happel
149- Sorenson
157- Logan Ryan, Dan Kelly, or Colton Clingenpeel?
165- Steiert
174- Yant?
184- Foster
197- Milkus
Hvy- Harrington

I have an Illinois and Ohio list I put together already. I will add Minnesota, thanks rodent. Michigan would be an interesting one as well, but I don't know Michigan well enought to assemble a lineup myself.

49-Barone
57-lagenderfer
65-white
74-brucki
84-Parker/ellingwood
97-Bruner/traxler
Hwt-adarios jones isn't wrestling D1 but he's the best heavyweight from Illinois this year. If not him maybe rachal

Ohio's

125- Tomosello, #1 Ohio State
133- Keener, #15 Penn State or Cameron Kelly, #14 Ohio U
141- Heil, #1, Oklahoma State
149- Kolodzik, #4 Princeton
157- Micah Jordan, #5 Ohio State
165- Marinelli, #16 Iowa
174- Bo Jordan, #3 Ohio State
184- Abounadar, #5 Michigan
197- Moore, #1 Ohio State
Hvy- Kasper, #6 Duke

My Illinois lineup is similiar to the one posted above, but I have Warner on over Bruner or Traxler. I also have a question between Duncan and Yates still (I don't know if 133 is possible for Yates anymore).

If you are including Redshirts Marcus Coleman comes to mind at 174.

People that are arguing that Iowa HS wrestling are as strong as ever need to read this thread. In 2010 Team Iowa (off the top of my head) would have been:

125: Matt McD 1st / Andrew Long 2nd
133: Joey Slaton?
141: Montel Marion 2nd
149: Mitch Mueller
157: Derek St. John RS
165: Ryan Morningstar 7th
174: Jay Borschel 1st / Jarion Beets 8th
184: Grant Gambrall? RS
197: Chad Beatty?
HWT: Blake Rasing?

And the 2017 team would have also been able to field the exact same number of AAs (not counting Gilman) with Peters (2xAA), Clark (champ), Sorenson (finalist), Thomsen Foster, Miklus (Redshirt 2xAA). So, the same number of AAs, but 1 less champ. Things really haven't changed that much.

2017 would only win about 3 matches vs 2010 though.

I think they'd actually be solid favorites in 4 matchups. Clark, Sorenson, Miklus/Foster at 84, and then I'd putt Ross Larson (OU) at heavyweight. 97 is a toss up.

So, 2017 would be favored in 4 and a toss up at 1 other, yet that is supposedly an example of how far things have fallen. Seems pretty dang close.

I already gave Miklus the match at 197. Foster is not a solid favorite over the healthy Gambrall that was 3rd in 2011. Not even a tossup. Raising would beat Larson IMO.

Maybe they would want to revisit 1987

THis is an interesting thread. Good stuff. And I look forward to the '87 all Iowa team if someone comes up with it.

I am not sure if the question is ONLY about how much talent Iowa is producing. But rather, how much more Ohio or PA is producing. While I would love to see them be a lot more equal, it probably isnt too realistic. As of the 2017 census, Iowa checked in at 3.1 million. Ohio was 1.5 million(3.7x bigger) and PA was 12.78 million4.1x bigger)

While I love the discussion, it just isnt a fair comparison really. Last year someone posted the per capita AAs and Iowa was #2 if I recall? That seems to be the best comparison.

While I know this wasnt the point of the original poster, I think its worth thinking about.

At first glance I would think that PSU has a huge advantage in shear population with OSU right behind them, but then I thought about how many D-1 schools there are in each state. Per Wikipedia here is the list:

Iowa(3): Iowa, UNI and ISU
Ohio(3): fOSU, Kent State and Ohio Univ
PA(9): Bloomsburg, Bucknell, Clarion, Drexel, Edinboro, Lehigh, Lock Haven, Penn, and PSU

fOSU clearly get the pick of the litter in Ohio, no doubt..... While PSU also get their first choice for the most part, it would be safe to say, but they face a lot of local competition, especially if the kid is highly driven to academics(Penn and LeHigh, more?)..... I'd like to think we(iowa) do the same in Iowa, but Schwab gets one up to CF every once in a while that we could use in iowa city and its just a matter of time before Dresser is doing the same. Aside from UNI and ISU, there are some kids that used to walk on to Iowa(for depth and potential development) that may end up at Warburg or Grandview that never had that as real option in the 80's or early 90's

Just food for thought. Any thoughts?

PS: For what is worth, the Rodents to the north live in a state of 5.5 million(1.7x bigger than Iowa), but those pussies have the entire 5.7 million to themselves. What in the hell is their excuse? :)

GO HAWKS!!!

The post is about this year, not last year.
So Iowa may have a down year this year, but last year they didn’t. My point is you can’t take a 1 year snap and say Iowa wrestling is down or not. Because it has good years and not so good years.

Crab: I agree. It will be more pronounced with our states population. The ups and downs that is.
