Questions for Willie The Brain

feel free to chime in whenever, Confuscius.
Not Confuscius, Wiliie, but I get it. It isn't really about the new wrestling facility. What you're seeing is collective frustration. It's just another way to b*tch about the awful season and pile on about TnT's supposed shortcomings. When stupid sh*t covers your glasses, the whole world looks like sh*t. Add to this the 100pt loss at Nationals, no Spencer-class blue chippers in the pipeline, the gambling fiasco, serious NIL money permanently altering the sport, the crazy transfer portal, and other teams fan's professed desire to "poke the bear" on this board, entitled Hawk fans become downright combustible.

Looking at this rationally, the new facility looks fine to me. It's sort of sunk into the ground, isn't it? Hard to have windows in a canyon. Windows other than skylights might be a distraction anyway. At the end of the day, it's new, it's big, it's plush, and it's connected to Carver Hawkeye. What else matters? No one is going to win an architecture prize for designing wrestling rooms, and design prizes are notoriously political anyway.

The donors have made a major committment. The fans are committed. (Okay, maybe a few of them on this board should BE committed . . . ;)) We're all left wondering how the team and the coaches will respond next season. This last year was supposed to be the "rebuilding" year, wasn't it? What was rebuilt? It's not a good sign when a coach's son and other starters fumble a season for NCAA gambling violations, or when they entertain the idea of adding a deviant castoff from a rival team.

There are no quick fixes or Hail Marys for this. It has to be rebuilt brick by brick. If the current staff can do that, great. If not, then expect more seemingly-irrational grumbling until (as Tom Brands says) we "right the wrong."

And now we play the waiting game. I think it would be better overall for the sport for him to stay at UNCO-G, but if he is leaving he definitely should go to Iowa City!

sir, this is a wendy's

The new wrestling facility is elite. One of the best in the nation. F** your 🪟's
I know you're an OSU fan. You made that clear.

And i agree, the OSU board has been Chill. So chill these last 15 years it kinda reminds me of a retirement home. A few old "has beens" grunting and mumbling about the olden' days.

Everytime I clicked on 34 and counting these past years I could even smell that retirement home aroma. Like imminent death approaching.

You guys even had a few duals that happend and barely even a peep on your board about it. Like the internet in Oklahoma went out in a Dust Storm.

"Any updates on the dual?"

"We lost. Guys were out of shape, sucked down and looked disinterested"

"Thanks for the update. Time for John Smith to head to pasture. Our RTC needs money"

"Atleast Daton Fix grinded out a 1 point win. Next year's team could be better"

"I love Cowboys"

"Yee Haw"
What the freak is a dual? Do you mean duel? I wish you’d make a little more sense and thought when you write a post, especial when it appears you’re attacking me. I’m not sure though, I don’t speak gibberish. Go pokes!

What I don’t understand is how ungrateful IOWA fans are. You guys have been one of the premier programs in the country for the last …while. The last program besides PSU to win a NCAA championship. Admittedly, you guys kicked the crap out of us the past 2 to 3 times (watch, some idiot is going to throw this in my face). You guys have the money to get a state of the art facility and all you can do is complain. You even have a thread on getting rid of your head coach. That’s class

Why is it so hard to accept the fact that Iowa fans are proud of their program and rich traditions, yet still believe improvements could be made. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. Maybe it’s because that requires nuanced thought and most people now a days aren’t capable of such monumental feats.

The fact that Iowa fans shelled out 25 million for a state of the are facility should scream that Iowa is proud of their program. I’ll grant you that most Hawk wrestling fans are spoiled, and they remember the days where Iowa was both feared and revered. Wanting them to get back to that level seems to indicate a passionate fan base. You’ll never meet a serious Iowa fan that is happy with the majority of the last 14 years.

If you can’t grasp this concept I suggest you go back to your own board and start questioning why you didn’t see this kind of discussion the past 15 years.

I do understand. I do agree, TnT are not the answer, but who else is there right now? Big names outside of Iowa are very few. It will be a few years before big names are available, Lee, Gilman (sorry if that was a bad word), but for now the Chihuahua twins are the best you got. Similar to TnT, It was time for John to leave, his style of coaching was becoming antiquated, but you never heard people bash him or any of the staff, with what I hear on this site. Though our previous staff hadn’t got us up to the apex yet, we felt they would and we appreciate them and their efforts. It’s more of a family in Oklahoma not the hunger games like it is in Iowa.

I believe the person thought Bo’s style wouldn’t fit what TnT style, but we all know he wrestles almost exactly like TnT wrestled. TNT, Spencer, Dake, Bo do not do a lot of crazy innovative techniques, but all have been extremely successful. That is why recruiting great athletes is so important. A guy like Askren was weak and not that athletic, so he had to get real innovative with technique to win.
Bo isn't going to be a 125 pounder. There isn't much to rest your hat on if recruiting an elite prospect like Bo who will wrestle something above 125.
I am not sure I would call Askren non-athletic. I agree with you to a point. TnT would not have had much to offer an athlete such as Askren, as far as development goes. If he was lacking conditioning or toughness, then maybe.

Ayala 20

Ailerez 20

Like I said IMO that line up contends.
I have to know. The 3 twenty pointers I assume are national champs who don't score any bonus. 5 wins each, all 3 - 1 (trade escapes and secure 2 stall points)?

The 4 15 pointers, based on the first assumption, must be 4 runners-up who also do not score any bonus and upon losing in the finals throw a shoe or flip everybody double birds causing the loss of a team point each?

9AAs, 7 finalists and 3 champs? A decade's worth of champions, 7 years' worth of finalists and 9 AAs and you only score 143 points?

20 points can be scored by guys who get 1st, 2nd and even 3rd if they go on a bonus point streak. 15 points are most likely guys who get 3rd or 4th. Those numbers were just ball parks. 3 of those guys are currently not even on the roster. This was a what if game. Without any of those non members I do believe Iowa will score close to 100 points and be battling for 2nd. With them it could be competitive. For the record I think we’ll only have 1 of the 3 on the roster next year and we’ll be lucky if he makes through an entire season.

You're telling me Tom Brands( the best recruiting closer in college wrestling) and Ryan Morningstar( the recruiting guru) couldn't close this one out?

Ben Askren has proprioception and body awareness that is off the charts. He also had an amazing engine.

Just because he didn't try to beat you up like TnT, doesn't mean he wasn't an amazing athlete. The guy is a two time Hodge trophy winner and an Olympian. He's one of the most technically advanced wrestlers the NCAA has ever seen.

The new facility is top notch. Iowa fans complain that it does not have windows and that is the biggest complaint. Meanwhile, the Penn State room has ZERO windows and is half the size of the new Iowa room. Not one person out of PSU complains about it LOL
The old room didn't have any windows, and no one complained about it at all.
Now the ones who probably bitch because their ice cream is too cold had to chime in,

Anyone know when and where Ailerez is making his announcement today?

Should we expect to hear something from Parco shortly after the Ailerez announcement?

i'm really really smart. AF.

can you explain your concerns, sir? perhaps like i'm 5?
IMO, the biggest issue with the new facility is how the first press pics were released on social media and sadly that established unjust prejudice, which is Iowa's fault.

Mats were dirty. I mean filthy beyond belief and the only views were facing the brick wall.

I was excited, but I'm also able to apply my imagination - which you absolutely SHOULDN'T have to do when viewing a state of the art facility.

Show construction/ update pics, elevate the hype, sure, but when it comes to your masterpiece you better make sure the place is ready. Make it clean. Be prepared to show it all.

They didn't do that and the non-Iowa fans ran with it. That was a mistake and one that easily should've been avoided.

It's marketing 101 and outside of Iowa women's basketball the entire school has been dog water in that area for years.

Also, I've never cared for you and have consistently said through the years how great you could be if you dialed it back. This thread you've done that. You've been awesome.

This is the only type of Willie I like. Pun intended.

PS: keep it up, you're in rock star mode right now.

I am not saying you don't know this, but anyone who has been around the sport for a bit knows that's how the mats come when they're brand new. It's quite a chore to get them cleaned.

People wanted updates/pictures of the world-class facility and then some of the same people complain about the pics that do come out (not saying that's you).

It's going to be OK - the facility is incredible.

it sounds like you're more upset with the PR handling of it than the actual room itself. (which is a fair (and more understandable) position imo

That's exactly my position.

I'm in the TV/ Film industry. I've worked on some of the biggest projects made within the past decade.

PR is everything. It makes or breaks everything in my world. Blundering that was a mistake that was easily avoidable.

Getting the powder or as I refer to it "white sh#t off new mats is a royal pain in the ass.

I'm fully aware and I'm saying, spend the time and f*cking clean them. People can wait a few more hours, no one would've been the wiser.

You wouldn't put your house on the market without sweeping and vacuuming first, would you?

Iowa was 100% in control of the situation and fumbled their big moment. They do that and no one would have said anything. Again - avoidable.

Or you can show the stages up to the finished product.
There were pictures put out of the facility while it was being built.
It was '"dirty", hadn't been swept or vacuumed, because it was a work in progress.
When the picture with the mats came out the project was not finished yet.
It was just an update on the progress and showing things are getting close to being done.

They once again failed to understand that a not insignificant part of the fan base is made up of mouth breathing morons. Totally their bad.

I mean seriously...why didn't they clean everything up for construction photos? How are you guys smart enough to log onto the site, let alone form complete sentences?
