Questions for Willie The Brain

Or you can show the stages up to the finished product.
There were pictures put out of the facility while it was being built.
It was '"dirty", hadn't been swept or vacuumed, because it was a work in progress.
When the picture with the mats came out the project was not finished yet.
It was just an update on the progress and showing things are getting close to being done.
But that's not how it was presented.

Argue all you want, but when those pictures dropped with "It's been a long time coming!" as the title it doesn't say to me "to be continued..." they presented it as a finished product. Carpet vacuumed, walls painted, amazing lighting, pristine equipment, but 5000 nasty ass foot prints across the ONE thing people want to see.

Point is, when you're in that position you control EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of the release, so don't cut corners. Make it perfect to blow the socks off every single person that sees it.

Marketing 101.

I did two years with the Center for Media Production crew (now called Digital Media Services) that does the official content release for the university. They weren't involved with any of the PR for this and I guarantee you they shit a brick when they saw it.

All it takes is a person with half a F'ing brain to figure out it wasn't finished.
It's not difficult to figure out, but you go ahead and keep making a big deal about it
Mr. Media man.

I think some of the disappointment with the new wrestling room is the fact it didn’t address some critical limitations of the original room and had every opportunity to do so. Moving the room from the bowels of Carver where there was no opportunity for natural daylight to a new “best wrestling facility in the world” with all walls having exterior exposure, I think many assumed the new room would include windows in the most important room and showpiece of the facility.

Rather than having some glazing with natural light that is proven to boost mood, performance, focus, stamina, etc. and to warm up the look and feel and make people not get the basement/dungeon vibe, there are concrete walls all around and only lighting from artificial sources.

The same walls that are there extending up above grade, could have easily accommodated some windows and avoided the frequent knock on the new space. This was an intentional choice, and still no reasoning provided on the obvious omission of what is standard in any new facility with a building program where natural light would be beneficial.

This is just another in what seems like a long line of simple and obvious missteps along the way that add up to create a larger issue and fails to maximize its impact and ability to deliver on a primary goal for the new facility to help Iowa catch up to the competition that seem to be doing the little things we are not prioritizing or executing.

The new facility is a huge improvement in many ways from the old space and I applaud them pulling this project off. I’m still just trying to overlook the best wrestling training facility in the world stumbling at step one of building design 101.

I'm not making a big deal, I'm telling you why people were shitting all over it: because that's how they perceived it. That's easy to understand.

Again, it was avoidable. Either you can accept it or you can't.

Anyone know when and where Ailerez is making his announcement today?

Should we expect to hear something from Parco shortly after the Ailerez announcement?
Bumping this so it doesn't get lost in the bullshit - I am also curious if anyone has any other info on his decision.

Mineo seems to think he's staying in Greeley:

They once again failed to understand that a not insignificant part of the fan base is made up of mouth breathing morons. Totally their bad.

I mean seriously...why didn't they clean everything up for construction photos? How are you guys smart enough to log onto the site, let alone form complete sentences?
And you're not smart enough to put out a fire before it starts.

How do I know? Because your dumb ass is always holding the torch.

That's exactly my position.

I'm in the TV/ Film industry. I've worked on some of the biggest projects made within the past decade.

PR is everything. It makes or breaks everything in my world. Blundering that was a mistake that was easily avoidable.
Not a single persons gana ask this dude if he’s in the porn industry???? I must not be in the cesspool.

You identified the problem fairly clearly here.

The main issues with the old facility were location, size, accessibility, and amenities. I never once thought "man if only this thing had a window!" nor did I ever hear that gripe. The #1 competition, and the only wrestling program that's been as good as Iowa in the last 30ish years, also doesn't have windows in their facility. This is nothing other than whiners looking for reasons to whine. If Iowa had won the last 5 titles and been producing NCAA champs on the reg in recent years no one would have said a word about freaking windows.

I'm fully aware and I'm saying, spend the time and f*cking clean them. People can wait a few more hours, no one would've been the wiser.

You wouldn't put your house on the market without sweeping and vacuuming first, would you?

Iowa was 100% in control of the situation and fumbled their big moment. They do that and no one would have said anything. Again - avoidable.

Why don't you volunteer your time and expertise and get Tom and Terry straightened out and educated on those nuances? I will be waiting for photos and film clips.

At least not yet. But my first gig I worked on was with the former producer of "Red Shoe Diaries" an old David Duchovny soft core series on Showtime.

So unfortunately, there is a small connection.
Coincidentally, the producer that hired me for that gig (horror movie shot around DSM/ Newton) helped put the final nail in the coffin for the film scene in Iowa back around 2010.

Bub was sentenced to federal prison for fraud.

Let's just say that amount could've funded an even bigger and better facility.

That’s simply not true that people are just looking for things to complain about. There are real missteps and self-induced harm to the Iowa program and brand with these simple blunders that are just disappointing when striving to be the absolute best and benchmark for college wrestling again.

Have you ever been to other program’s wrestling facilities that have natural daylight? Honest question. I’m guessing not a single person who has been in facilities with daylighting has viewed it as a negative, but the alternative has already been commonly stated and pointed out by those who see the missed opportunities.

If you are a recruit that every single program wants, it could be the combination of any number of variables that helps them feel one program is the right fit and place. Walking into a natural light filled space would certainly evoke a more positive experience for about everyone and when the competition has these amenities that Iowa doesn’t, that does not meet the objective of creating THE BEST facility that stands above the competition.

You are correct Penn State does not have daylighting in the facility that was built during a much different time and when that sort of design was standard. I’m guessing when they build a new facility in the future, it will certainly include natural daylighting. They have so much momentum right now, it hasn’t been detrimental, but that is not the case for Iowa who continues to be reactive and play catch up instead of being innovative and pioneers and executing ambitious plans to the highest level of success possible.

Have you noticed though that about every new wrestling facility that is built in modern times, tries to incorporate daylighting? Why Iowa chose to omit something so elementary to building design just seems a little short sighted and a missed opportunity.

If you were looking for a new office space for example and your budget was at the highest price point, would you honestly select a space in a windowless basement but that has all the cool features and amenities or a high floor suite with glass and daylight and views all around AND all those same cool features/amenities?

I don't live in Iowa anymore, otherwise I would. Personally, I'd love that job.

And I know several filmmakers that graduated from Iowa that have offered to come back for guest lectures/ seminars, myself included, and the University has zero interest.

They like their guys.

you do things like cleaning the mats before you unveil the first pictures of your amazing new practice facility for the same reason you put out hype videos and nice looking schedule posters (instead of just a still b/w photo with times new roman font over top)...because optics matter

iowa wrestling is a big-time multimillion dollar organization that should be run with the attention to detail that goes with it

"winning in the margins"...the top wrestling schools are all amazing places to train, so it's often the little things that can make a difference

I don't blame the University. Listening to you lecture about how everything should be perfectly clean before posting progress pictures would suck.

For all you bitches:
Hey Bob any chance we can cut a few ski lights in that concrete structure with the nice new roof, asking for a few dumbasses???

You two are absolutely comical. So there can be no criticisms of ANYTHING?

For a program that challenges their student athletes to do the little things right and not cut corners if they want to be the best, don’t you think it is a little hypocritical for the same standard to not also be applied toward the execution of these hugely important undertakings?

Even if you disagree with the importance of daylighting, why even give people ammunition to criticize? When multiple people are pointing out the same thing, including past Hawkeye wrestling greats, there might be a point there, even if not everyone feels as strongly.

Wet dreams get criticism from some of you guys.

Ya know, It's a good thing there isn't windows. They would've been too dirty to post pictures of. Dodged a bullet there.

Now you're just being nonsensical.

It was a mistake. A design flaw. Period. Will it change how TNT do anything? nope. but it certainly is a microcosm of our product as a whole.

Just because you think it's stupid doesn't make any less important.

Ya know what makes a B movie a B movie? It's not the budget, it's the details.

Yesterday leading people to believe Alirez was a Hawkeye, and today back to bitching about windows.

Another microcosm of who you are.
Hey man. That's what I heard. I didn't say he was coming.

And I didn't "bitch" about the windows, lol. I have in the post (started a whole azz thread about it). But I think the point is that it's a real detriment - so much so that other hawk fans have a gripe about it, and non-hawk fans use it as ammunition against the program.

But please Mr. Therapist. Tell me more about me.

I'd hate to see if you were making a big deal out of it then.
You've got multiple posts explaining what a blunder it was.

I'm not accepting any of the nonsense you've got going on this subject.
