Questions for Willie The Brain

So, @smalls103… What’s your take on a team no call/no showing a powerhouse hs team after primary recruiting target chooses a different team? Could that affect recruiting efforts at that school dtr if the hs coach feels slighted?

Man. I wonder if you’re over-valuing Sinclair.

While he definitely looks better down a weight, he doesn’t have a leg attack.

Especially when you put Valencia and Cole Mirasola as 4 stars. Just wondering your thoughts there.
i don't blame you for thinking i over ranked Sinclair. he's tough to evaluate imo and you wouldn't get an argument from me if you slotted him in the back half of the Top 10.

that being said, he wrestles often and he just doesn't lose. he ended his career with the longest domestic winning streak in the country and he has wins over Connor Mirasola, an Olympic Trials qualifier who took down Aaron Brooks, and beat Josh Barr (2023 #4) five takedowns to zero.

i get that most of his offense comes from counter/reattacks. but he's really good at it.

if he can go 184 out of the gate i really feel comfortable in him being an immediate impact guy. of course i'm less optimistic if he's 197 (not sure he has the length for it.) there's always pros and cons with each recruit.

i talked to M*. there's another side to the story. i won't break that confidentiality (i respect the heck out of Ryan).

ultimately there seems to be miscommunication and/or ruffled feathers between the two parties. hopefully that can be ironed out.

Absolutely shocking to hear talk of miscommunication/ruffled feathers between our staff and coaches. 🙄

forgot to ask - what do you mean in regards to Sinclair's ranking vs. Cole or Valencia?

not sure what the relationship is there.

Cole and Valencia have senior level wins and can attack legs.

So surprised they are 4 stars and not 5 stars.

As opposed to Sinclair was my point, I guess.

by all indications, Cole is going to be going HWT in college and that is a project imo. the talent is there for sure, and he has elite HWT high school wins. but there's a touch of uncertainty.

I think Sinclair beats him rn and they are possibly two college weights apart. Cole is also in a dogfight with Johnson and Hopke as the best HWT in the class and that's with Sahakian (who beat Hopke) coming out next year.

Valencia is difficult to assess. His folkstyle has been basically non existent for two years.

Willie, just curious what you hear about Parco. I may have missed something but things seem to be very quiet on him.

What’s the good news? He’s not going to OSU and is instead staying put?

It's looking good!!! Not a done deal yet though

Even if he has been watching wrestling for 10 years or less, he seems to have an accurate understanding of the current situation.
I believe the person thought Bo’s style wouldn’t fit what TnT style, but we all know he wrestles almost exactly like TnT wrestled. TNT, Spencer, Dake, Bo do not do a lot of crazy innovative techniques, but all have been extremely successful. That is why recruiting great athletes is so important. A guy like Askren was weak and not that athletic, so he had to get real innovative with technique to win.

I don't want to hear it from you. For years recruits were flown in at night just to avoid the depressing drive to campus! LOL
If you are talking about that drive to Stillwater… I agree with you 100%. The first time I drove there with my boy to see a home duel match, I felt the drive was 3-4 hrs. I looked at m clock, it was only about an hr. 😂😂😂😂
I’m just ribbing you guys about the facilities. Someone mentioned wrestling in a broom closet in high school. Your facility makes me feel like I’m at home again, wrestling in my old broom closet. Ahh the memories 😉

So if Alirez comes to Iowa, Parco is out? That your optimism!
In the past I recall people saying Parco does not cut much to make 149. That he could go 141 if needed. Ailerez is also 141 moving up to 149. You'd think one of them could make the cut for a shot to win a national team title. I do think we would be in the conversation if we landed both.

No. If I give Alirez 23 and Parco 15 next year, it would be a net plus of 20 points. You would be lucky to score 100 next year.

If AJF stays out of trouble and is in the lineup come nationals he will score 16-20 points, Nelson will likely be back as well according Pyles today on FRL which is another 10-14ish. The stars have to align of course but I can see Iowa scoring 100 at Nationals. Challenging Penn St. for a title? Unfortunately no.
