(Disclaimer: A lot of us can't afford to contribute to these collectives. That's a whole other thing and nobody should have a problem with it.)

But setting that aside, fans who have always wanted Iowa to take that next step and become a power program have their put up or shut up moment. I'm just saying, if we want Iowa's recruiting to maintain or improve, we can contribute to that fairly directly now.

Can we though? How is this money used? Sounds like lots will be wasted just like my tax money!

How much is going to kids that don't even play in games? Do I have a say in how my money is used?

Until I know this I'm not donating. My money isn't going to walk on and bench warmers. That does nothing to make the team better....

Their grades sure as hell don't matter to me either, that's just idiotic!

If you want your money to go to specific player, set up your business to contract him/her thru the collective. Businesses have that option

There’s a reason Iowa’s the one and only school doing a collective that way…its the only one dumb enough to waste resources on the third string women’s basketball player or 2nd string walk-on kicker by paying them the same as the starting QB…get effing real

So what is going to happen to the donations that the universities were getting? Is that going to be an issue?

Every team needs walk ons and second teamers (you call them bench warmers).

Our response to NIL was hiring two white bozos and self-proclaimed "marketing experts" to run an NIL collective that lacks any sort of originality and creativity. The IC NIL Club is one of the worst marketing rollouts I've seen at the D1 level, just god-awful scripted Twitter videos with every player saying the same thing.

You'd think after our recent racial tensions within the program, the University would strive to bring in a diverse set of people to help lead these young men. It's disappointing but not surprising.

Well actually (pushing glasses up my nose) those are the best players to make the team better. Practicing against Iowa State every day would do nothing to help the team improve. They need competition, not immobile tackling dummies and a jugs machine lobbing punts to the defensive backs.

This is true. Question is, how much do those guys need paid to come to Iowa?

I don't agree with people saying it's dumb to pay everyone. It's brilliant to pay everyone. If we support it well enough, it basically gives out staff a huge edge recruiting the 3 star guys that are the backbone of the team, and makes us the most attractive place to walk on. It helps with depth and with having high-impact starters within the developmental model.

(Our coaches are better at scouting than recruiting sites are. I don't look at our recruiting classes in terms of stars. I look at how often they get their first choice at a position vs getting a fall back guy.)

BUT, I definitely agree that we also need a way to hunt the handful of big fish we want every cycle. I wish we had a collective that was focused on that, on getting the Xavier Nwankpa and Kyler Kasper types. I think we especially need to incentivize top wide receivers and (to a lesser extent) running backs to come here.

Not having anything in place to assist with hunting the top players is a huge weakness.

Bingo. And this isn't just impacting football. Basketball team lost out on multiple day-1 impact players to far worse programs simply because they couldn't match what was being offered.

I really struggle to believe that Iowa can't muster up $200K and a car for the most prized recruits. There are families in Iowa City that would pay that fee themselves. We just lack any sort of creativity and Barta is approaching this with an outdated mentality.

I suspect it's an even bigger deal in basketball (beat writers are saying it is), but I really only care about the football team.

(I care about the *people* on the other teams, but I don't care if they win; I don't watch their games; etc.)

Gold.
Coaches just spend time with players even if they don’t help the team.
What a maroon.

Many so called bench warmers are important. Carson May and most of last years class will not see the field this year other than garbage time. If our first or second string RB gets injured the third stringer will see playing time. Our second and third string LBs will be very important next year when our outstanding ones leave this year.

Why. To me it speaks more of your infatuation with diversity than reality. Hire the best regardless of their race. Oh, as for diversity being better than homogeneity. the facts don't bear it out. The most homogeneous western nations, have the lowest, crime rates and strife as well as higher standards of living, better educational systems and are rated freer than the U.S. They are also the countries the left always refers to as shining examples of socialism, even though they say they are not socialist.

The amount of dumb in this post is truly amazing, even by HR standards.

Today's scout team are starters next year. That is how it works. Very few first year players are running with the 1's and 2's right away.

If you don't think young black athletes who are making your University millions of dollars deserve to be represented by POC in leadership positions you are not only dumb, but also a bigot.
Not sure why you think i’m saying that.
For the ic nil and the swarm nil the university hired ZERO people, one less than one, the number you get when you multiple it by zero, etc.
If you think the athletic department and UI don’t take diversity into account when hiring you are totally clueless.

What exactly is Iowa the only school doing?

Just curious as to what you know that I don't. I thought the school had nothing to do with the way the collective as ran/organized/etc.

Bottom line is we are Iowa , our Nil projects seem to just keep us right around where we have been for the last 20 years.
I really doubt there is enough $ around here to move us up the pecking order , but we sure as hell don’t want to move down the list.
The top Iowa boys will do fine, probably not as much as they could get somewhere else ,but hopefully enough to keep them in state.

I do find it strange that a school would care about that there grades. Weird times.

Iowa probably should have just ignored that the school itself is now allowed to give $5,980 per year for academic performance and just kept that money to buy some new chairs for Gary's office.

Obviously you have never coached and are a total narcissist.

You realize there are two Iowa collectives, right?

Nice personal attack there. You might want to look in the mirror on that one.

There are a bunch of current players getting paid NIL like CJ Stroud, DJ U (Clemson QB), Bryce Young, and others, some getting paid millions, while most of the roster gets paid little to nothing. It doesn’t cause locker room issues except in your head. National Championship head coaches seem to have managed just fine.

Just like in real life, we all get paid based on how many resources or skills we bring to the table. Some are more valuable than others. Paying everyone the same when you are in a competitive market is always doomed to fail.

Playing football in college is now just like any other job. I’m sure that if an employer made a compensation offer for the same work you do now that doubled your salary you’d probably accept it. Pretending otherwise is sticking your head in the sand.

So, if Barta, who is not involved in the collective, was "more creative", then what exactly would happen?

And, if families in IC can pony up $200k and a car for a prized recruit, then why don't they?

I'll be the first to admit that I am confused.

They both pay players that opt in exactly the same amount. In the long run I think its likely that the Iowa City NIL Club doesn’t survive because the university and major donors threw its weight behind this one.

I’m not against having a part of the collective operate this way.

But we need one that pays the big time recruits what they’re worth. And it really upsets me that the head coaches all endorsed what amounts to be a deeply unserious venture when you don’t have that option. We’re not going to even be able to do well in women’s college basketball doing business this way.

You are saying the color of someone's skin is the critical factor in whether they should be employed in this endeavor, and yet you are labeling others "bigot".

My understanding is that the "studs" will still do some stuff on the side to rake in some money. No, it's not Texas A & M guaranteeing $1m to a stud for signing, but there is the chance to make more $$ if you earn it.

Back in my working days I also never got paid before actually doing anything so this doesn't compare to real life at all. If I were an NIL donor I would ask for results before handing over cash. (Disclaimer, I'm not and never will be. It's a game and I enjoy it as such) I'm also a fan of letting every athlete partake in this instead of simply catering to the big names. Should they all be compensated equally? Probably not. But no reason the 2nd string guys or gals shouldn't get a fair shake. They're the reason the teams improve each day.

I’m no super wealthy donor, but I do know and am exposed to some our top-flight donors and families.

I can tell you with full confidence that there are multiple individuals with suites at Kinnick who have been pressing Barta to open a collective similar to what the SEC is doing; where alumni can simply dump lump sums of $$ into a singular fund that’s used to attract potential recruits.

Barta does not agree with this approach. He isn’t outright against NIL, but he believes money should come from businesses or marketing agreements where the player is sharing their exposure and likeness and not just receiving a flat fee for joining the team.

This is why Iowa basketball lost out on portal kids to mediocre programs like Ole Miss.

I will admit I have not seen all of the complete NIL deals we have going. But I thought in the original HR podcast there were two different accounts being set up. There is one where everyone gets an equal share of the pie. And then there is one for your superstars and they get more. There is also the players NIL deal that was recently announced.

Yes, we don't have a plan to get more 5* & 4* players by paying them directly just for signing but I think the plan in place is perfect for our type of program. Kirk & co have a certain type of player that they know fits into their system. They can sell the NIL deal which will pay everyone as they develop. They can also sell their NFL success. "You will get paid as you develop and look at our track record with our NFL picks". Our staff likes these type of recruits. And they can sell the fact if you become a superstar you get more money above and beyond.

I know this is the football board but I do wish we could possibly entice some studs for basketball as just one or two players can make a much bigger impact that one or two football studs.

I'd like to see how this all plays out and maybe I'm misunderstanding certain components but before I'd get too critical of how this is set up.

Yes. We have the Iowa City NIL Club, a players' collective, which is an egalitarian and for-profit subscription service ($199 per person, per year); the Swarm Collective, which is a donor- and crowd-funded non-profit, and then there's an affiliated thing they are calling a collective, but it's not paying guys. It's more of a middle-man or clearing-house, as I understand it, facilitating advertising deals between individuals and businesses.

My issue with all of that is that the non-profit is limited in how much they can pay guys, and none of those involve directly paying high-performing individuals.

And I don't agree that this strategy, without a way of paying top-performers, is a good one for us.

"You will get paid as you develop and look at our track record with our NFL picks" might work for certain positions and against certain schools. But if we're competing with Alabama, Michigan or Ohio State for a guy, they can get paid now AND develop and get paid as a pro. And if we're competing against almost anyone for a WR, HB or dual-threat QB, we can't claim to develop them better or claim they'll get paid as a pro. We don't have that track record.

I think we could see our WR recruiting decline even more with our current strategy.
