Recruiting

Looks like top 10 is UNC, NC State, PSU, Lehigh, tOSU, UMich, Iowa, ISU, Nebby, OKSt. Come to Iowa Jax! Slightly surprised to not see Cornell on the list.
In the Flo video of the midnight phone calls, Jax said he was surprised Iowa state and Nebraska didn’t reach out to him. I guess he still put them on his list. He made it clear Oklahoma State is top priority for him, Taylor made him sweat it out though. I remember Carl showing up at Suriano’s door at midnight. Is that still allowed?

I sure hope these kids don't decide where they are going to college based off midnight phone calls, or lack there of.

Then again, this current batch of guys were hatched in 2006 so I'm not sure how best to cater to them.

I'd figure they would prefer a snap, Instagram message etc with a cash drop to their Venmo accounts for mullet maintenance and mustache wax.

Knox did.

Plus. It's recruiting man. Kids want to know you want them and they want to be sold their dream. Those 2 parts have never changed.

The only thing that's changed is the money.

I don’t think that they will make the decision based solely on who called at midnight but it is one of the many factors to consider. No matter how old or young a person is it is always good to feel wanted.

I currently wouldn't want anyone calling at midnight. Even if my wife called out to me at midnight, I would probably run for the hills. I am too old to do without sleep. However, if I were a young college kid, I would answer the call with fervor. :)

When I first read this, I thought you were talking about the hypothetical of your wife calling young college kids. My bad.

Regardless, I believe pics of her are now required to be requested.

I like the move Iowa is making with Owen McMullen. He is best friends with Bo and Jax. Try to get him in so it helps when they move way out to Iowa City. McMullen would probably never make the Iowa lineup but he is a great team guy and high character hard worker. Great practice room kid to have in your program.

Kid seems to have jumped levels also. Being 172 as a soph in PA is no joke, and he was district champ and region 3rd to make states. Would not be surprised to see him on the podium, potentially near the top, as a junior and be a hammer as a senior. Obviously not the proven commodity the other two are, but trending in the right direction quickly.

He wrestled 71 kg (156 pounds) at the US Open in April and took 8th

He is down and wrestling at like 145lb or something around there. That's where he was at for Fargo. I believe he went 1-2 at Fargo, he also did not place in PA States last year or really any significant tournament. He did place 7th or 8th at the US Open which is good. I have seen a lot of this kid. It's not his wrestling that is great. It's his work ethic, mentality, and also being a great teammate. He isn't really a top tier wrestler but he is a hell of a kid and tough as nails. Good program guy to have in the room.

When asked what teammate they would most like to get a D1 offer, they both said McMullen. They love that kid.

Yes of course. He is a great teammate and a hard worker. I love the kid also but he is not a top tier recruit that will plug into the lineup and can win on this level. He is a great kid and team guy that you want in your program because of his high character and work ethic. And most importantly he is best friends with 2 of the best recruits in the country, so yes bring him in also. It won't ever hurt having a kid like this in the room everyday working hard.

I agree. Especially now that 9.9 scholarship rule went away. The program needs room guys of high character who understand and embrace their role. And we need hammers. Sounds like a win-win-win-win!

agreed. in hindsight they should have done that with Gable's brother. Gable was worth 2 scholarships IMO.

The kid still has 2 seasons to improve in a good room. Could end up a Caliendo/Franke type recruit in the 40-50 pfp range, who can surprise some people. If it help land Bo, and even Jax, he’s worth his weight in gold

Here is the scary thing about this though. PSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma State, none of those blue blood schools are recruiting him it seems. So either we(Iowa) are very smart trying to get him in hopes that it draws Bo and Jax, or we(Iowa) are fools. Him being Caliendo level is a stretch. The key here is in hopes it helps draw Bo and Jax or at least one of them.

No way they are fools for making that kid feel welcome on the team, unless he signs with IA and they go elsewhere, eh?

I doubt they make him a big financial offer, so they have little to lose. Worst case is his two buddies end up at Oklahoma State, and we have a hard working, good kid as a room guy. We lost quite a few room guy this last 12 months.

With the NIL being what it is. You can offer the kid a full and tell the others to make it up with NIL money. There is no need to offer scholarships to the elite kids any more. The scholarships go for the kids who cannot get any NIL money. This is how the rich get richer and poor get poorer.

If they’re now giving the poors full rides, that’s not making them poorer, eh?

So other schools get the blue chips and we get a room guy. Sounds familiar.

The smaller (poor) schools will not have the NIL money to give the star recruits and will be giving scholarships to their starters. Now if the smaller (poor) schools get 30 scholarships to hand out, then it may work out for them. But if they do not get that many, it will make them poorer.

They will not have the luxury of giving a huge offer to what would be a room guy somewhere else. That means they will be left recruiting a lower level kid that the other programs do not even think is worthy of being a room guy.

Did I explain that well or is it still foggy?

But, it’s a perpetual false narrative. This year’s lineup could have 5 top 5 lb4lb recruits in Ayala, Arnold, Kennedy, Ferrari and Kueter. Add in DeLuca next season and that is 6. Except PSU, because their recruiting is otherworldly and simply shouldn’t be compared to, what other schools are trotting out better?

If they keep bringing in 2-3 super high end transfers each year, like they have been recently, they are FAR ahead of everyone but PSU, when it comes to bringing in new talent…

Ohio St. they could be starting Davino (Top 5), Bouzakis (Top 3), Mendez (Top 3), Paddy (Top 3), Sasso (Top 5), Rocco (Top 10), Feldman (Top 3)

Recruiting wise VT is on fire with the number of high level wrestlers they’re bringing in, and they have only crowned 2 national champs ever.
