Referee Inconsistencies

I'm in the process of collecting all the matches from the tournament. What I would like to do is put together some snippets of referee inconsistency across matches, wrestlers and rounds.

I know there is a lot of talk of the Dean/Aiello match (haven't watched it yet) and also the Marinelli/Amine match, comparative to B1Gs (double unders straight outta bounds was called there, but not here).

I need more examples and what you're looking at that you saw called differently in another match that wasn't called. I think it'd be a fun project to see if who is wrestling really does matter...or if there is a referee that just plain sucks...or how the referees clearly swallow their whistles as the tournament goes on.

Please post below the session (and mat # if possible) of the match and i'll make a note to review it.

Thanks!

Not sure which mat but Thursday night session:
A stalling call in sudden victory gives Sebastian Rivera a 7-6 win over Chad Red. Watching that live I thought it was quite questionable.
I saw it and it looked like Red backed right off the mat and didn't try and circle in at all. I was suprised the ref acdtually had the guts to call it. Thought it was the right call, but still it decided the match right then and there. Figured Red was so tired he didn't realize what he was doing or maybe not aware of the stall calls against himself.

Great point, I should clarify I don’t think the call itself was necessarily wrong but you rarely see it in that situation, more consistency among officials would be ideal.

Thanks Luther. Im not sure there is anything to compare it to but I was surprised when the ref told Desanto he would be called for stalling if he did another front headlock on RBY. I clearly heard Desanto ask him if he was going to call stalling on him or RBY. I think the guy in the front headlock also has some responsibility to try and get out of it or get up or something other than lay there waiting for the stalemate.

i saw that too and was confused...but wasn't that the same ref that touch falled someone earlier?

Don't know which ref, but Murin looked like he got the benefit of a touch fall I thought. Think someone said that was his only fall of the year.

The ninety degree danger scramble rule was very inconsistent. Mostly because the refs are down on the mat looking.
How long did it take for the ref to get in position for Warners near fall against Buchanan?
I was next to a former official who cited on more than one occasion, they either don’t know the rule or their not in position because they aren’t anticipating where the action is going.

2 matches that come to mind for me were Chad Red's opening match against C. Mich., he was able to hold onto the C. Mich. for what seemed like forever after starting in top position and C. Mich. got to his feet and no stall call for not returning him to the mat. Also in Bull's match versus Wick, Wick had his right leg in while riding on top but also held Bull's left ankle for more than 5 seconds. Im not sure of rules there but i thought holding an ankle when starting on top started a 5 count.

official number 6 was as bad as i've ever seen at this level. i know it's not easy, but not a great weekend of officiating imo. the near blown call on the edge in the starocci-lewis final was insane. that wasn't even close.

@LutherAce

I noticed a huge difference in how the 5 count for being below the waist immediately after a td was called.

I don't have any particular matches in mind. Just overall seemed very inconsistent.

Sometimes, the refs would immediately start counting after awarding the td. Other times it would be a few seconds, almost as if the ref would forget that a count was supposed to occur. Yet other times, the ref would call a stalemate instead of counting at all.

I dont claim to know the particulars of rules on this situation. But it seemed to be called very differently from match to match imo.

Murin was going to win but yeah that fall was a gift. Reminded me of the time at Nattys they gave Marinellis opponent a fall on a roll through.

I thought the same. Some refs just didnt even start a count when they were right in front of the action. They need some work there.

just wanted to provide an update...i finished getting all of the footage...next step is to break out the matches of each session, each mat (very tedious and time consuming).

one thing i was hoping for was the abiity to export the bout sheet data from TrackWrestling, but i reached out to their customer service and was told they have no way of exporting that data. I fought back once and they double down that they can't export bout sheet data, even though i can click every match and get it...that might derail one of the data projects i was going to attempt this year...bummer as i was interested in gathering and grouping all the referee matches together.
