Robert E. Lee Day

Neither was Lee
That is the correct answer. Alabama and Mississippi honoring Lee is no different than the state of Hawaii honoring Admiral Yamamoto, or Pennsylvania (largest German-American population) honoring Himmler.

These guys all lead attacks on or followed leaders that declared war on the United States of America. One could argue that Lee was the worst of the three, because he was also a traitor.

Lee chose his home state of Virginia instead of the US federal government,.. This would not have been a long reach at the time, given that many still viewed individual state government as primary and the federal government as secondary.

Sure he made a decision. He was should be judged on that decision. He wanted slavery to continue because it was economically beneficial. We need to be clear about what he fought for and what he represented. He is not deserving of reverence or the hero worship the south has given him.

What if I was to tell you Alabama and Mississippi also has paid state holidays for honoring Jefferson Davis and Confederate Memorial Day….
Most would believe you as it’s pretty common knowledge that Alabama and Mississippi are at the top of the trashiest states in America.

The civil war was about much more than slavery, the North actually wanted to destroy the south long before slavery became part and parcel of that conflict.

Rebels shouldn’t have holidays in the US.

That said I think Robert E. Lee might be the best general produced in the United States….even if he was a major leader of a rebellion.

Chancellorsville might be the best victory by any American general in any war…outnumbered almost 2 to 1…splits his forces. Routs the Union army…only thing that save the Army of the Potomac from getting completely annihilated was darkness…

This is lost call bull shit. And it has unfortunately been lapped up by rubes.

The south had disproportionate power from the very beginning literally baked into the constitution. When they saw the writing on the wall that eventually the power would shift in favor of the anti slavery states and the wealthy would eventually no longer have access to free labor they threw a temper tantrum resulting in 600,000 people losing their lives. The south's refusal to adapt to an economic system that didn't rely on slavery was culturally and morally backward even in the context of the time.

The north had no interest in destroying the south. If anything the south was oppressing the north, insisting on cooperation with slavery see the fugitive slave act. Lincoln was opposed to slavery but was not an abolitionist. His concern was that the Union would completely dissolve if states could leave every time they didn't agree with a law that passed. Incidentally the south started the war without any actual legislation passed against them.

Chancellorsville was a tactical success but Lee has been glorified as part of the lost cause narrative. Lee lost nearly 20% of his forces at Chancellorsville which was proportionately worse than Union forces. The south could never afford these costs for what ultimately were limited gains.

His overall approach was flawed. His aggressive tactics has no chance of being successful as a long term strategy. His victories were always costly. He was mostly absent at Gettysburg compared to Meade and he didn't listen to his officers who told him that continuing the battle would be a disaster. He had limited consideration for logistics. He couldn't see the big picture and was too willing to sacrifice his men.

Prior to slavery becoming an issue wealthy industrialists in the north were plotting to undermine the wealth of the south. The winds of a conflict were brewing well before slavery became an issue.

Yep, if Alabama or Mississippi could win with an all white team they would do anything possible to do it. It took the federal government, by force, to make them to allow black students in their schools. The only reason blacks are on their football teams is because they become irrelevant without them.
Actually Sam Cunningham impressed Bear Bryant enough that he was able to convince the higher ups to allow it.
