BF should have went with a bigger stronger RB as soon as he saw they PSU was selling out for the run. Wadley is just as dangerous out of the slot or running a route out of the backfield.

I would also like to see Wadley hit the back cut once in a while. We have three good backs let keep everyone's legs fresh and keep the defense guessing. Just a few thoughts.

Actually, if they would have passed on first down, it would have slowed up those linebackers enough to get some yards on the ground. BF needs a lot of work at adjusting to defenses.

I would have thrown for 5 or 6 on first every time. I like that he started to throw to open the run game.

I was thinking that too ... and I was also concerned that Wadley's ankle might still be dinged. However, on the flip side, if there's a hole ... Akrum usually finds it. Another thing is ... if Iowa faces a stacked front and Akrum finds a crease ... then it's usually a huge gainer (sometimes TDs).

We only ran like 45 total plays. 7, 3-and-outs. No drive longer than 6 (yes SIX) plays.

I dont think being fresh was an issue in a y way whatsoever Saturday.

What I was thinking about was we didn't see two running backs on the field at the same time often if at all AND , there was no jet sweep or jet sweep decoy to help open up lanes.

MSU does this a ton and so does Wisconsin. BF surprised me that he went away from that this week.

Something about PSU's D apparently made him assume that it wouldn't work. Either that, or he doesn't want to over-use it.

It hurt having Butler out, he runs hard and does a good job in the passing game both as a receiver and blocker. With him, we can put Akrum in the slot. The young backs probably weren't ready for that level of play.

This, I believe I heard Herbie say, sometime's you gotta pass to set up the run.

Pass to set up the run when the defense is daring you to do it by putting 8-9 guys close to the LOS. psu added to that further by having backers running into gaps right at the snap. If you think your O-line is much, much better than their defensive front and you've got a battering ram at running back then I suppose you can say line up with 2 tight end sets and blast away at the wall in front of you. That's not what Iowa had so it made no sense to try to pound away in the middle or just off tackle multiple times.

When your field position is your own 10 twice and your own 1 once, turning exclusively to the pass game with a raw QB and new receivers doesn't make me too comfortable. When we did throw even our senior dropped the ball. I feel the same about freshman runningbacks.

If an experienced o-line can get a just small seam for AW he has proven individually he can make people miss. With 20/20 hindsight it's easy to say we'd have been better going to the pass, but if a sack fumble had happened or a pick six we'd all be saying keep it on the ground and give your bell cow a chance to do something special. We played it very safe hoping we could turn them over on D or get a decent run against a stacked D. In the end it didn't work out, but we plenty of chances to win it with this stategy. A couple of bad results could have had a real negative impact on Stanley in the longer term as well.

Stanley missed wide open MVB on first series on second down. Then MVB dropped two passes on next two series as did ISM. Good play calls were made but they weren't completed or executed.

This was a classic case of a half where you just can't dig out of a field position hole. The good news is we kept em out of the end zone. The bad need news is that we were buried in deep in our territory most of the half. To survive that and emerge ahead at the half was amazing.

That being said, they ran a run blitz almost half the time on first down. Why didn't we run a quick screen against their blitz to keep them honest? Maybe I'm a simpleton, but when I see a blitz heavy D, I start thinking screen or quick slant over the middle.
