Time’s Up

Amelia Smith@ameliairheart·12hRecent Planet imagery of the Pripyat river in Belarus near the RU-UA border shows a new bridge having been constructed earlier today.

Doge@IntelDoge · 12hSatellite imagery shows some sort of prep work for what I imagine to be a bridge. Location is the Pripyat River, roughly 4 miles from the Ukrainian border. Hoping newer imagery comes out soon so we can see. Zoomed out photo shows tire tracks.

The unholy alliance of the GOP warmongers, and the Biden Administration trying to promote a war, are disappointed that an invasion hasn't yet happened today as the "intelligence" indicated.

Umm plenty of war hawks in the Democrat ranks too unfortunately.

I don't share your faith in trusting Biden and Co. to find more Solyndras to run off with half a billion dollars.

LOLWUT?

The US government backed others, like Tesla, which have done quite well, my friend.
Not every venture is going to succeed. We just need some to succeed to tip the balance away from fossil fuels.

You seem to be oblivious to how much the fossil fuel industry has been subsidized for the past 150 years. Inclusive of the $8T over the next decade we'll spend on the military.

And folks like you will freak out over less than half that investment in renewable investments.

I’ll let the VCs find those opportunities, not the bureaucracy and the politicians.

You deliberately edited out part of my reply, gormless worm.

I'd rather quit subsidizing foreign oil with the Pentagon and let profits drive investment where people demonstrate demand.

And, your naive take on this is "the profits will drive us away from fossil fuels". Which is nonsense, because that's exactly where the short-term profits are. And the externalized costs can be pushed onto the rest of the world as a whole.

So you don’t think that wind and solar are genuinely cheaper than fossil fuels?

Have they expanded solely due to "venture capitalists", or due to federal policies that spurred the industry growth?

You're terribly inconsistent on this issue.
No, the government has been subsidizing the industry.
Now will you answer my question: do you think that wind and solar are genuinely cheaper than fossil fuels?

I thought you were the one saying coal and gas were unprofitable and would whither?

IEA's Coal 2021 report says global power generation from coal soared 9% in 2021 to an all-time high of 10,350 terawatt-hours.

Overall coal demand worldwide – including uses beyond power generation, such as cement and steel production – is forecast to grow by 6% in 2021. That increase will not take it above the record levels it reached in 2013 and 2014. But, depending on weather patterns and economic growth, overall coal demand could reach new all-time highs as soon as 2022

"Do I think"?

I can look at the data and see they are, now. This was NOT the case when policies were put in place to incentivize the industry. We would not be in this position today w/o those policies from a decade or more ago. And no "VCs" would have gotten us here.

There is STILL infrastructure needed and support needed to facilitate more renewables. You seem woefully misinformed on this topic.

So what classic song will Pearl Jam cover for the Ukrainian refugee charity album?

When we tell our citizens if they don’t get out we will leave you there, it opens the door wide for Putin to grab land. I doubt if the sanctions are a big enough threat to ultimately make him decide to take a pass.

When you look at a linguistic map you can see he has already seized, or partitioned in Donetsk and Luhansk region, the areas most sympathetic to Russia.

Trying to take the rest just invites an endless war with Ukrainian nationalists, and you know the U.S. and others would be funneling them weapons. I don’t think they’d see a net gain.

France and Germany are trying to cut the US out of interference (that was the point of the Minsk and Normandy format meetings) and I suspect they’ll pressure Ukraine to accept the fait accompli in the east. They want to get back to doing business.

The net result is a more western oriented Ukraine (as the sections that pulled it to a near 50/50 political split before the coup are outside of the control of the Kiev government).

Is this going to be like religious "end of the world" predictions?

When will we get the updated invasion schedule?
Still hoping the robust NATO and US response has made Putin blink but as I posted in another thread, a new bridge has gone up over the Pripyat River in Belarus. That seems to indicate an attack can still come off.
If the US actually had intel when the attack was scheduled to jump off, they may have changed it.
They will still have the mostly full moon and frozen ground for a while longer.

Keep wishing. You never know, just like Joes Place, your wishes might eventually come true one day, and you can declare victory.

On August 11,1984, President Ronald Reagan makes a joking off-the-cuff remark while testing a microphone before a scheduled radio address. While warming up for the speech, Reagan said "My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
Coincidently he brought down the Soviet Union without firing a shot. Pretty amazing!
