Rutgers Grades

J-Bean: No one on this board is saying anything the wrestlers don't already know. I promise you Brooks knows he wasn't sharp and that he has to get out from bottom AND can't almost pin yourself. No one here is being critical of these guys, just making observations. If you want to see people being critical go check out the basketball forum right now.

With that said something else that caught my eye last night was even though Stoll didn't put on a very good ride, he also didn't get flattened out or ridden by a very good opponent. If he can continue to get out like last night he's going to be tough to beat.
When Stoll put on zero ride I was worried that Smith was going to win on the riding time point. Part of the hwt battle is being able to get away from a 260 pound guy laying on you, and Stoll did that very well yesterday

That is exactly what would have happened if he lost. This board was a complete mess after NCAAs last year. Our fans are the best when things are going well, and are more petulant than any other fan base when things aren't going well

I disagree. We might have a few guys go negative but it comes with being the largest board in wrestling with diverse opinions. Some guys are homers, only see rainbows and sunshine; others see the worst. 10/80/10 rule.

Yes, the boards get toxic after a loss but show me one that doesn't. We are not even close to football or basketball IMO.

As per the norm JBean, we are going to have agree to disagree. Now this evening I didn't have much to be critical about as I thought the Hawks wrestled great for the most part. They all showed a heck of a lot of fight. To pretend though that Sammy Brooks performed at the level he is capable against a clearly inferior opponent is silly. I don't think that the only people that are allowed to have a critique are current or former D1 wrestlers/coaches. I've been wrestling for over 25 years and am extremely passionate about the sport, just because I cannot now or ever wrestle at their level doesn't mean I can't critique a mediocre performance. Most sports writers make a living at this and almost none of them competed at the highest level. I am a BJJ Brown Belt and have been training for over 10 years. Guess what? I critique black belts all the time that are better than me!
That's all fine and dandy but you guys make these critiques without knowing a dang thing. What if Sammy was sick?

I knew Sam has been sick but did not know he was up sick all night. Add to that its finals time he is a bit mentally drained. Was not at the last practice I went to also. Sam is going to give you everything he has and then some, no worries from me for Mr. Brooks....

Gilman: A, kid is on a roll and love his attitude!!
Clark: B+, just needs to start a bit quicker to get a "A"
Carton: B-/C+, first time out against #3 and hung right in there with him
Sorensen: A, Might be the best wrestler we have on the team....
Cooper: A-/B+, BIG win for "Coop"
Rhoads: B-/C+, Almost but not quite against a rd of 12 type guy
Meyer: C, He is really starting to worry me I am 99.9% sure he is a AA but we need him higher than where I have him right now...
Brooks: B+, Like I said earlier he has been sick and not himself a "ugly" win but considering the circumstances I'll take it.
Burak: C+, Should have scored more but that's Burak. Great kid that gives us a lot of headaches but he's a winner.
Stoll: A+, Man of the hour!! Getting better each time out. I'm a bit suprised that he improving as fast as he is but if I were a betting man I would say he can be a AA this year!!!

I bet only a handful of people knew that. You know why, because neither Tom Brands nor Sam Brooks used it at an excuse. You shouldn't either.

Most people have indicated, in different words, that this is exactly how it appeared. He seemed a bit off, and a little sluggish compared to normal. I would say that the criticism has been fair. I doubt Sam Brooks needs you coming on here to make excuses for him.

He wasn't up sick all night as far as I know. The point is none of you jack holes have any idea if he was sick all night or injured in practice this week. All I know is Sammy has been a beast all year so I am giving him the benefit of the doubt. As far as I'm concerned he gets an A+ for winning when he obviously wasn't firing on all cylinders.

Sorry spoons I was just citing one example of why some should think before they "critique". If anyone on the team has earned the benefit of doubt it is Sammy. The team looked great last night overall.

I like the majority of people that post on this board, but I have seen this place in full meltdown mode more than once with everyone throwing every wrestler and coach under the bus. Maybe my comments are a bit unfair, but lets face it, our fan base is spoiled by success. We all have high standards for our guys, but we need to be realistic at the same time.
I agree with this but I have been on this board long enough to recognize who the posters are that make outrageous comments and question a wrestler's effort. When posters start questioning a wrestler's effort and/or "why even show up" I usually ignore and move on because it is probably some clown wanting to start something because he is bored. This is the only wrestling board I go to because guys on here have great information and are true iowa wrestling fans.

This is exactly right. Sammy got the win! This is not a pattern ladies and gentleman. We have to remember that these kids are human beings and not robots.

I didn't know that and it is a very powerful reason why no one should lose confidence in Brooks over one match. Let me give another reason: The kid he wrestled was not a tomato can. The Rutgers kid was very quick, he had a very good ride (as we all saw), and to date he has lost only to quality opponents. None other than the defending champ Gabe Dean beat him only by a score of 13-5, which was not very different from the margin of victory that a less than 100% Brooks managed. Sammy turned it on in the third when he had to.

He wasn't up all night as far as I know either. I never heard him coughing or anything. But then I'm out in California, so it's possible I might have missed something.

Got to listen to Ironside on the drive home.
Really only happy with Gilman's effort.
Specifically mentioned that Meyers / Sorensen have to start faster
Stoll has to win on his own shot, but the ref has to call the stall
Clark is letting people get to his legs to much
Carton cannot give up the wrist, looked like he thought they were oob before he gave up the wrist and then the backs.

So just about when I began to question if there was any good news coming out of the 29-6 win, he mentioned that...

Brody made weight today and is expected back for the Midlands.

I remember reading this last night and thinking Ironside's standards are way up there because I thought Brandon was very aggressive in the first period getting three TD's and going on to dominate. Folks think we are tough to please...jeez.

Come on, guys, all Mark wants is perfection. Is that asking too much?

Seriously, though, nobody on earth, apart from our wrestlers and their families, wants them to win more or has their backs more than Mark. One heck of a great Hawkeye.

What would it take for Mark to be happy? 10 AA and then a defeat of six armed aliens?

I thought burak looked better than everyone is giving him credit for, he did not go last time out and was in control the whole match was never in danger, it's not like hrmyck is a total dude. I hope Nathan stays heathy for the whole year looks to be in excellent shape.
